The team is going to continue to try and win until that option is eliminated. Things have been tightly knit in the AFC for quite some time now. An 8-8 record can get you in the playoffs. With that being said we are a long way from being "out of it", so I expect Joe PhiddlePhaddle to continue to look at all options as potential answers towards getting wins.
I still think Ryan Tannehill gives us the best chance to win right now, over Matt Moore. Benching Tannehill this early would signify throwing in the towel on him, and that would be the end of his era. I think he honestly (and deservedly)...gets the rest of this season to prove that he's not a bust.
We have no other options at QB right now. Starting Matt Moore this early is a horrible idea in my opinion. If we end up losing the next three games, dropping to 1-5, it might then be time to start Matt Moore in hopes of him being able to rally us back into the playoff picture. At that point we would just have to pray that we have the next Rich Gannon....I guess one can dream.

You can't lose a fixed ballot, and Tannehill was starting no matter what. Philbin bet his career on it.

If Moore was significantly better than Tannehill, he would have been starting.

Philbin went with the better of the two quarterbacks.

I think Moore is/was inconsistent for different reasons. He makes more bad decisions, but has better fundamentals. But then that's the trade off.

He'll likely make both more good plays and more bad plays. But at least it's exciting.

He does have better fundamentals, however he does get sacked almost as much as Tannehill. Tannehill averages 2.9 sacks per game and Moore is 2.6.

I see replacing Moore with Tannehill as replacing an under 80 rating quarterback with another under 80 rating quarterback. Yes, he had one year at 87.1, however that was only 12 games. Tannehill had 84.1 until the last two games.

I could see if Moore was a player that has played significantly better in the past, but he hasn't.

The problem with Tannehill is that you just can't win with the type of passing efficiency (YPA) he's exhibiting nowadays. One of the biggest predictors of winning in the NFL is YPA differential, and it's going to be real hard for the Dolphins' defense to hold an opposing QB under the 5.1 YPA Ryan Tannehill is currently exhibiting, let alone hold him enough under 5.1 to give the team a realistic chance of winning based on that alone.

Something has to change under those circumstances, because winning is just very, very unlikely unless something changes. And if you don't have confidence that Ryan Tannehill can change, then you have to change the QB. The only direction is up. You can't get any worse than what we're seeing right now, in terms of the team's chances of winning.

That Buffalo game was well out of hand by the time Moore came in for a limited appearance. My lingering memories are the 2012 game against the Jets when he entered in the 1st qtr after Tannehill got hurt and led the team to soundly beating the Jets 30-9. Also, the last game in 2011, also against the Jets, when he led the team on a 21 play drive to score the go ahead TD in an eventual win.

That is true, however I see zero evidence that Moore's efficiency would be better at this juncture. Changing to a qb who is worse than Tannehill, seems to be a step back.

And if it's not better, then you lose nothing. However, you can't stick with a quarterback who's playing this way, because he gives you very, very little chance of winning. You have to change quarterbacks simply because you have nothing to lose! :)

He played all but the first ten snaps in the game where he replaced Henne, so more like 13 games.

I hope Moore does start. Sit Tanne and see if it lights something under his arse. If Moore comes in and plays good and gets us into a possible playoff birth, then all the better...and it's possible. I hate when a team will make a change when the season is gone and the playoffs are out of reach. It's all about winning now. I want to win this year. Hell, a meteor or something can come along and smash us all into oblivion. There may be no next year. Win now baby!! :pointlol:

It wasn't level. Moore was still worse than Tannehill.

I actually would have preferred Moore starting the 2012 season and letting Tannehill learn. Moore's inconsistency and poor practice history hurt him. The main reason's Tannehill started was that Sherman and Tannehill brought the same Offense and calls with them from TAM, so he had an immediate advantage over Moore. The other reason was simply that Tannehill was so inexperienced that they wanted to get him live fire and game experience asap. If the OC and offense had been anyone else, Tannehill most likely doesn't see the field until last season, or possibly this one depending on how well Moore did.

As Mr Clean said, it was completely stacked against Moore and for Tannehill. Now Tannehill has to learn his first new offense since leaving High School for TAM and also is having his mechanics changed. He isn't adapting well at all... Moore has at least proven he can play in different schemes and win games. He's no worst at this point and the offense needs something more than we're currently getting from our QB play.

Tannehill has never put up a season like Moore's 20011 or 2009. Moore can win you games. His problem was always injury. He's a very good PA QB and is a great fit if Moreno comes back strong.

I would contend that Tannehill's 2013's year was nearly as good as Moore's 2011. Tannehill threw for 50 more yards per game, had 500 less yards rushing, and had a 8-8 record, compared to 5-6.

The personnel fits what Moore does best on the football field. You've got a seam stretching TE, he has chemistry with Hartline (who doesn't?), he likes to throw screens, and he loves to throw it deep on PA passes. Moore's nothing amazing on the sidelines in the intermediate range from what I remember but in all honesty he's just a good QB, decent starter. I don't have a good comparison for him in terms of NFL QBs that were successful over a long period of time.

Until the last 2 games? You mean the last 2 games that were the most CRUCIAL games the Dolphins have played in several years to possibly get us to the playoffs that Tannehill looked like dog poop in? Those 2 games? Why on earth would anyone not consider those 2 important games when evaluating our starting QB?? The lengths that some people go to to defend a player amazes me...

I project Moore around 88-92 in QB rating if he starts a long period of games. That's about league average these days. That would get Miami to the wildcard. In terms of a trade with Cousins stepping in for the injured Griffin there aren't too many more capable players to put in for Tannehill.

...and if it is better, you get worse draft position with which to draft the next QB, which HAS TO HAPPEN, unless Tannehill improves and proves he's got what it takes.

My choices in best to worst options.

    1. Win with Tannehill.

    2/3. Lose with Tannehill.

    2/3. Lose with Moore.

    4. Win with Moore.

You don't have to draft a QB in the first round. Foles was nothing exceptional but is playing great ball in the same system in Philly. Evaluate the QB not the draft position and the round.

  24. Colorado Dolfan

    Colorado Dolfan ...dirty drownin' man?

Didn't say you do. Winning pushes draft position back each and every round.

Want that second-round QB? Better hope he falls to late second-round.

Just the way it works. Moore getting us to the playoffs the same way Pennington did hurts the team more than Tannehill doing the same or even either of them failing.

So the idea for the various teams is not to win as many games possible and try to make the playoffs?

  26. Colorado Dolfan

    Colorado Dolfan ...dirty drownin' man?

Nope. It's to win the Super Bowl. Matt Moore is not taking this team to the Super Bowl and likely neither is Tannehill.

Let's see if Tannehill can shake off this funk he's in and get us to the playoffs. If he can, great! We've got next season to look forward to. If he can't, oh well. We were looking at getting another QB anyway.

Moore may win us another game or two, but in the long run, it's better to sink or swim with Tannehill, IMO.

  27. MrClean

Which first requires making the playoffs, which means winning as many regular season games as possible.

  28. Colorado Dolfan

    Colorado Dolfan ...dirty drownin' man?

...and with the deficiencies this team has in all facets of the game and in coaching, losing in the first round also gets you no closer to the Super Bowl.

Moore starting is a desperation move. Period.

As the debate rages on, it might be relevant to point out that Matt Moore has yet to play a meaningful game in his career. He's only played when the pressure was essentially off.

Ooh, I certainly do. Those stung big time. Big time. I can't get that out of my head. All they had to do was win one of those games and we're in. Tanne was atrocious in those games. Hard to get that out of my mind.

The Matt Moore I have seen discussed on this page is not the Matt Moore I have ever seen played.

I would think that Matt Moore was a Chad Pennington or another quarterback who had real success in this league. Matt Moore is a good back up, he is not a starter. He will probably have a 79 rating, and play as well as Tannehill. He will be better on deep balls, however he will have more, WTF throws and just as many sacks.

Another thing, people get on Tannehill for his 9 fumbles last season. In the fabled Moore 2011 season, in three less games, he fumbled 14 times and lost 6 of them.
