Caught this note today in the Palm Beach Post.... "In one-on-one blocking drills, Jason Taylor drove tight end Ernest Wilford straight back into the backfield."
"Tight end David Martin was nowhere to be seen when the Dolphins held their lone workout of the day Friday. The Dolphins declined to explain his absence, but Martin hasn’t been in top form since coming off sports hernia surgery during the offseason."
Unfortunately I've got a feeling we're going to end up having to take the cap hit and cutting Wilford. Im having a real hard time seeing where he fits in. I like the idea of having a WR playing at TE for the sake of matchups... but if he can't block at all when needed, what good does it do? I like that were trying to salvage the signing... but I just dont see any good coming out of this.
Wilford might just catch on @ TE, especially if Martin is not fit to play 100%. Who isn't driven back by Jason Taylor. aside from being a total athlete, he is the angle & leverage king of the NFL defenses. let's not count Wilford completely out just yet. Remember the Packers converted Martin from WR to TE before he came to Miami. it could happen to Wilford too.
From early in the ota's, you could see the quickness, the skilled hands, The IQ, and the way his body looked, that we had signed the jason taylor that still has 2 or 3 high level years left... This man is a significant upgrade to our defense as a whole. i said it when he signed, he should not be underestimated because hes 34.
So a possible future Hall of Fame pass rusher dominates a newly converted, undersized TE in a blocking drill. Yeah, Wilford sucks.
I agree with Muck folks. Every Left Tackle in the NFL has been man-handled by JT. Being a glass half-full type of guy; IF Wilford can learn to block the likes of JT, along with his receiving ability, people will be saying "Who's Martin"
Wilford being used at TE is nothing new, they are also trying him at H back ala Cooley. Except Jake Long apparently
Wilford can create some interesting matchups when he is in there .That would be his value to the team IMO not as a blocking TE. That may not be enough to make the team though.
I Would love to see Wilford work out as a TE, salva es cap hit a d he would create a few pass WR type mismatches especially in the red zone. Posted via Mobile Device
I will say he could really create some serious matchup problems, and actually, its not like Antonio Gates, Witten, or Dallas Clark are known to be outstanding blockers
