You beat me to it Greg!!! I heard Ethier might be involved in the deal. I am happy my Phils left him alone.
By Jon Heyman, SI.com The Red Sox traded embattled slugger Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers late Thursday afternoon, SI.com has learned. Jason Bay is headed to Boston as part of the deal, SI.com has learned. The Pirates will get four minor leaguers in the three-way trade. The Red Sox went back-and-forth with the Marlins and Dodgers as the 4 p.m. ET deadline approached. Ramirez said earlier today, as first reported by SI.com, that he would accept a trade to any team. The announcement will be made in conjunction with a World Baseball Classic announcement at Dodger Stadium shortly. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/07/31/manny.sweepstakes/index.html?eref=T1
My hope is that it's the Dodgers minor leaguers being sent. But there are a few I've got my eye on so hopefully they'll be spared.
Damn, I like Manny a lot so it'll suck to see him wasting away in that cesspool Chavez Ravine. Red Sox get Bay so they're still a very strong team, also something I was hoping wouldnt happen Trade seems to make sense all the way around though.
The Yankee fans have to be doing head stands!!!! Bay is not a good hitter with runners on and is not hitting rightys. This hurts the Red Sox's
Sox without Manny vs. Sox with Bay......I am very happy!!!! Maybe I have to be careful for what I wished for....but Bay is not protecting Ortiz and vice versa compared to the magic those two (D.O and M.R) had vs. Yanks. Pop a top and light a cigar time!!!!!!
I agree the Sox arent as good today as they were yesterday (there is a joke here about how good they were yesterday but I wont touch it ). I still think Bay is probably the best return they could hope for, as far as not weakening the lineup too much in the short term. They still have a solid team all around and if Manny was going to be a distraction or not play hard things could work out for them by getting Bay. Manny owns several Angel pitchers so seeing him moved definitely makes me happy
I'm pretty shocked. I didn't think the Red Sox would make this move. Bay is a pretty solid player, but he's not ever going to replace what Manny brought to the table. I think this move is only going to highlight the putrid bottom of the order the Red Sox throw out there on a daily basis. I sure hope Bay can handle the Boston market. I guess we'll find out.
Love this write up: The Dodgers swooped in at Thursday's trade deadline and acquired one of the greatest sluggers of this generation, acquiring Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox as part of a three-way deal in which Boston acquired outfielder Jason Bay from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources told CBSSports.com's Scott Miller. In return for Bay, sources say, Pittsburgh will receive right-handed pitcher Craig Hansen and outfielder Brandon Moss from the Red Sox. Also, the Dodgers will send third baseman Andy LaRoche and right-handed pitcher Bryan Morris to the Pirates. Hansen was Boston's first-round pick in the 2005 draft and Morris was the Dodgers' first-round pick in the 2006 draft.
I don't like this trade at all Manny one of the best hitters ever and they trade him for only Jason Bay. This trade makes Boston weaker and am very disappointed with the move.
Lovin it even more. But I will note that Pittsburgh got it worse than Boston so there shouldn't be that big a dropoff for the Sox. Of course, unless Manny puts a curse on them...
hell, the Mets said they didn't want the headache, for the minor leaguers the Dodgers gave up I would take plenty of asprin for Manny!
Do you think they should have just kept Manny and prayed he didnt turn into a bigger distraction? There is no way you'd get equal value for Manny, so all things considered I think Bay is a pretty decent return. An argument can definitely be made that they should have just kept Manny and hoped he'd play hard the rest of the season, but if management wasnt convinced that'd happen it could turn into a good trade.
Yes they should have just kept him and hoped for the best. Manny has done this before and would then be completely fine for whatever reason because he isn't wrapped too tight. They should have went through the rest of the season with Manny and then dealt with him afterwards. Bay is okay but to just get him in return is an awful move.
