I just want to take this opportunity to say I really hope we can let some of the strained relationships on this board that have resulted from Ireland's continued employment begin to heal. We're all die hard Miami fans and we all cheer for the same team on Sundays. We are always going to disagree about players, coaches, FO, etc. But Ireland was different. Because he was a largely ineffectual GM for this team for 6 years, an eternity in professional sports, these disagreements led to festering anger, resentment and caused some real beefs here. People putting people on ignore lists because they either liked Ireland or didn't like him, name calling and finger pointing on both sides of the debate, with pretty much everyone being guilty of petty behavior at some point. Intrawebs friendships on this board were strained because of views on Ireland. And for my part I take at least a 50% share of the blame for that. But Ireland is gone. Whether you liked him, loved him, hated him or were indifferent, how about we let the healing begin and let's all have a virtual beer tonight. I got all the immature japes I had in me out of my system in the Irish Out thread, and I'm going to make a very concerted effort from here on out to not let my thoughts on Ireland cause anymore beefs with anyone on this board. So let me officially extend the
My official stance on Philbin is: If the new GM likes him,so do I. I just hope he isn't forced on the GM applicants.
If he is forced onto the next GM, it will only be for a year unless he does well. There's no reason to think otherwise at this point.
If Philbin can have as good a 3rd year as Rivera, I'll have a sh**-eating grin for months. Draft us a Luke Kuechly new GM!
He should be. He's 2 years deep. The first two years he had no choice but to deal with a borderline ******ed GM who refused to draft good players and signed players who didn't fit the system. If a new GM wants to come in and bring his own coach with him, then **** them. A new GM brings in his own coach, his new coach is going to want to bring in his own QB. I want as much consistency and continuity for Tannehill as can be.
Yeah I'm a supporter of Philbin, because I believe he can improve and should get another year to prove himself. But whatever the new GM wants is fine with me.
Careful, his hands are clammy and mixed with all that Cheetoh dust it turns into like an orange spackle.
What will be revealed going forward, is that those with the greatest loathing of Ireland will continue their malcontent ways when the new hire is not who they want it to be.
We have exorcised the Ireland demon, now we're clean and able to heal.
Wow look at us all! You would have no idea that we just lost out on the playoffs by losing to the JEST and Buffalo based on the atmosphere here! That's the spirit!
Feels like I just took a huge dump. Instant relief. Lets just Hope Ross doesn't get us somebody worse. He seems to be picking around the Jets Garbage bins.........
In a vacuum, I agree with you guys 100%. If this 8-8 season happened with a GM who we all agreed wasn't the problem, and this team wasn't in the position of hiring a new GM, I'd absolutely agree Philbin should get another season. He improved from year 1 to year 2, even though it wasn't drastic improvement. I still worry anyone who is being brought in to run a football team being told, "This is your coach, deal with it." But I agree with your line of thinking. You make a great point about Tannehill. Where Sparano failed in every way imaginable in developing Chad Henne, we saw great improvement in Tannehill from year 1 to year 2. In short, yeah I'm fine with Philbin getting another year. I just hope the next GM is too. Or that it doesn't cause the best GM applicant to not want the gig.
It's not possible to get worse. Even if it was Mike Tannenbaum, he at least built a team that went to back to back AFC Championship games with a limited quarterback. PS: It's not going to be Tannenbaum.
A new coach or GM is not going to look at Ryan and think that they need to bring in a new quarterback. If anything, Ryan's presence is what makes this an attractive job right now. As a GM, you don't have to go looking for a quarterback. You are only charged with finding the pieces to put around the quarterback.
Dude, I already apologized for that. I really thought those farm animals were clean. Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 4
Agree 100%. I'm only worried a new GM is going to want to pick his own guy at coach, or maybe just not be cool with being told you're stuck with Philbin he cannot be fired this year. I don't think any GM worth a damn is going to look at Tannehill and think that is a position that needs upgrading. Not sure if I made a typo somewhere in there that made you think I was talking about the QB and not Philbin.
Another thing to think about. Joe Philbin is far more respected within the league than he currently is with this fan base. In fact, most in the NFL think it was a damn near miracle that he won 8 games with this team this year. I know I heard Gil Brandt on the radio on Wednesday or Thursday talk about how he should still be considered for coach of the year for the job he did this year. I think at the very least, most GM candidates will be willing to work with him and give him a year of evaluation. I've been saying for a while that our problem never was coaching this season. It was our talent level.
It wasn't just Brandt, a lot of NFL media guys and girls were saying Philbin was doing a great job given the circumstances. I'm glad Ross isn't giving up on him yet. He has flaws that he needs to work on, and he knows it too, but there are things he brings that are positive. He is incredibly smart. We have been one the most disciplined teams in the league the last 2 years (this year, only Indianapolis was better) and the players genuinely like him. He may end up not being the guy, but I'm glad he's getting a 3rd year to prove himself.
Heck, this site will be boring now....lol just kidding. Best site on the web and what's a little controversy between fellow fin fans... Bottom line we all care otherwise it would be a boring site...
I will never forgive you but everyone else around here I like. I think its best for everyone if you left now and followed your boy Ireland to whatever team he is headed for next
LOL I got this mental picture of angry parents banded together in the bleachers wearing shirts that spell out Fireland
I'd happily extend the kind of green plant I'm pretty sure you're talking about. A little puffing of the old peace pipe would go a long way I think...
