"Laveranues Coles, one of the NFL's brightest stars, is a wide receiver for the New York Jets with a multimillion dollar contract. While Laveranues seems to be living the American dream, inside he is haunted by a nightmare from his childhood—a secret his coach and even his closest teammates didn't know." http://www2.oprah.com/tows/slide/200510/20051018/slide_20051018_284_101.jhtml Been told before but I thought I'd bring it up again. Sad story. Its good to see where he is at right now. Hes a good player.
It a sad story, but one that happens more often then one would think. I took a class on sexual preditors, there I learn an alarming fact. 75% of males in the US are sexually abused before they reach adaulthood. Of that 75%, 65% are commited by a family member. Most cases are never reported or are reported years later do to the same resons as Cole, embasment and shame. Now I don't expect people to jump out there and admit to it, but odds are 75% of the male members on this board have been abused. It wasn't until I was 22 married and even then it took hours for her to drag it out of. I still have a hard time talking about it, but believe it or not, it get easier each time and it allows me to regain a little piece of myself that I had thought I had lost forever.
I am very sorry and sadden to hear this. No one shall be abused in any way. I have a lot of respect for you.
Is this a recent article? Just curious because I checked a jet forum and didn't see anything about it. Regardless, it's sad that so many people go through this.
Nah this is a pretty old article. He appeared on Oprah about three or four years ago I believe and told his story to the public.
Takes guts to do what Coles did, especially on Oprah. He'd have my respect regardless of whether or not he played for the Jets.
Wow big ups to him for coming out with the story, might help others in his situation tell someone who can help. Also big ups to the cops for figuring out he wasn't just another bad kid so to speak.
Yea I find myself saying **** the Jets sometimes as well. Better that then putting a lamp through the TV though.
