Henne didn't cost the Dolphins multiple picks.

If you trade up for Cam Newton or Ryan Mallett, it will cost AT LEAST a 1st this year, a 3rd this year, and a 1st next year, if not more. If you miss, then that sets you back much more than missing on a 2nd or 3rd round guy at the position that you don't have to move multiple picks for. The draft is the life blood of a franchise.

A qb is the lifeblood of a franchise.

If you find one in the later rounds that's great but we've tried that and it hasn't worked

There in lay the problem. You don't just decide you "want" conviction in someone b/c you're desperate for a solution. There's a handful of QBs who could go in the 1st round this year, but personally, if I owned the team, there's only 1 that I would take at #15 or trade up for (none if Gabbert didn't declare). It's hurting us enough losing a 1st on Odrick and a 2nd on White.

This is actually one of the big questions I have on the guy, would he be getting the same coverage and hype if Flacco hadn't been moderately successful?

What I've watched of him doesn't scream stud NFL quarterback.

There are four guys in this draft with:

    1. Exception Size (avg 6050, 236 lbs)
    2. Exceptional Arm Strength
    3. Pro Accuracy (avg 65.3% completion)
    4. Pro Aggressiveness (avg 13.0 yards per completion)
    5. Exceptional Passing Production (combined 1074 of 1643, 13921 yds, 110 TD, 40 INT)
    6. Winning Records (combined 44-8, none are worse than 10-3)

Take a mile high view for a second. When was the last time you can remember there being four guys that fit that description? Is there any single one between Blaine Gabbert, Brandon Weeden, Cam Newton and Ryan Mallett, that you do not think fit the above descriptions? They're all very aggressive with their throws, they all own pro accuracy, they all have exceptional arms, they all have exceptional size, they all have exceptional production and they all have great records this year. Like I said the worst records among them are the 10-3 finishes of Gabbert and Mallett, then you have Weeden's 11-2 and of course Newton is working on 13-0 and potentially 14-0.

So you going to tell me there's only one among those four that's going to make it? And you're going to tell me that the one that will make it will be so obvious that the Dolphins can't trade up for him?

The Dolphins need to get OUT of this conservative "too expensive" mentality, when it comes to trading. It's not possible to "mortgage the future" when you don't have a future, and without a franchise quarterback you don't have a future.

I personally believe Miami actually has a unique advantage right now. Stephen Ross has bungled things pretty damn good and he's got to be desperate for a quarterback especially since he didn't get Harbaugh who has a reputation for having a magic touch with quarterbacks. He's not going to object to the money you have to pay a top 5 pick at the position. Other owners might.

Next year's draft will almost CERTAINLY feature a rookie wage scale. This year's draft will almost certainly not. That means that we are now in the unique position of every team in the NFL having bullets in the clip that are much more valuable than the bullet in the chamber. The current proposal from the NFL would pay the #1 overall pick like a #20 overall pick. Can you imagine how incredibly valuable that #1 overall pick becomes, then? Think about it. You get Ndamukong Suh, or Sam Bradford...and you're paying them $3-4 million a year for 5 years. ABSURD! Next year trying to trade from #15 to #2 would be like trying to punch through a brick wall. You won't have access to enough ammunition to do that. The value chart is going to get completely re-drawn.

But what that means is that it should be EASIER to move up in 2011, if you allow yourself to tap into next year's picks. You get a team on the phone and you say hey, we'll give you our 2012 first round pick...and you know damn well with the rookie cap that pick is a HELL of a lot more valuable than a 2011 first rounder.

Now, I don't know if teams will recognize this...sometimes you just can't account for stupidity. But if they're smart, they will. I know that if we weren't so effing desperate at the QB position, and a team came calling looking to pull the same old "if you give us your 2nd rounder this year we'll give you our 1st next year"...I would accept the offer before he even finished the sentence and go streaking down the road in the buff and laughing maniacally.

Does it suck that we have to dip into valuable resources in order to get a franchise quarterback? Yeah. It sucks. But, we're already fvcked. We're at the abortion clinic trying to get unfvcked. It's not a time for cowardice.

3rd rd on Devlin would be a Colt McCoy like steal, hopefully Cap is correct..I'd move up to take him.

Yes it would, and it would be a much better overall and much more fiscally sound pick than trading multiple draft picks to move up for a guy like Cam Newton or Jake Locker whom you are going to have to not only give multiple picks for, millions of dollars for, but you are going to have to spend an enormous amount of resources just to attempt to change their mindset from runner to passer, which will take years to do.

Chris, I agree with you. Reread my post my friend. I said that I would trade up for the right guy. IMO that guy is Gabbert. I still have reservations regarding Mallett & Newton...... and Cam has a Championship to play through, so I'd like to see how he handles that. We both know history tells us it's quite possible that only 1 of these 3 pan out to be a good-great NFL QB.

Weeden probably has the shortest LTI, but he's not going in the 1st so I wouldn't have him in the discussion. My personal order would be Gabbert, Weeden, Mallett, Newton. (and I'd have Weeden as #2 b/c we wouldn't need to us a 1st on him & his LTI).

I'm pro-choice so I have no qualms about pulling out the coat hanger. I just wish we had an OC to know which offensive direction we're going. And I agree with your draft pick philosophy and was thinking about how great it would be to trade back the #15 pick and then parlay that into an extra 2012 1st.

I've watched Devlin play a few times in person, and he has looked pretty solid to me. granted, I don't believe Delaware has ever beaten us (William & Mary) in my time there, which is a good thing haha.

To those concerned about the competition: The CAA (Delaware's conference) is the SEC of FCS. I know it's still a step below, but there is some great competition within the conference and the defenses in particular are pretty solid. CAA teams regularly compete with FBS teams (ACC for instance) and we have beaten those schools.

Basically, I wouldn't shy away from Devlin, but I should add he doesn't really cause a lot of teams within the conference to fear facing him.
