It absolutely disgusts me to lose Landry, our best playmaker on the team and what we got in return absolutely disgusts me as well. Now, with that said, I understand, considering our cap situation, it had to be done. We would have been hamstrung to do anything. So, the one I mostly blame is Tannenbum. I hated him when he was with the NJ Jerk--fs and I hate him even more now. He didn't draft Landry, but s--t, do something better than this BS and what we got for him?? Pssh. Lame. It is what it is. Might as well go try and trade Suh now. What does it matter? Might as well try to get more cap space.
Now that his 16M tag is off the books do you think we make a play at Allen Robinson who they might feel "is" worth the money Landry wanted? I don' know where our cap is now, I know we needed his contract gone to be under, but Ian Rapport was saying pretty much that we are back as players in free agency now that we have money. He was saying there' money now to sign a few mid level starters...
Frustrated this is being spun as the Dolphins FO getting value for Landry. They should never have been in this situation in the first place. Landry's contract should have been taken care of ages ago.
Man, the Browns just got a lot better just with this move alone, but considering getting Landry AND having the 1st and 4th picks in this draft. Holy s--t. Maybe a Sam D and some Minkah or a Barkley and some Sam D, etc, etc, etc ,etc... ...damn. Their times may be a changin'. They better be.
Not the best case scenario, but along the lines of what I expected. I just hope t-bum doesn't go all super-market sweep on this free agency period.
I think it is important to point out that we were basically FORCED to trade our best offensive weapon the past 4 years.....under the Trump administration. Thaaaanks Don.
I was joking with a friend earlier about our compensation. I told him we'd get a bag of dirty socks. I wasnt too far off. what a joke.
Barnwell on ESPN graded us at a B- for the move. Basically said we got something for nothing. Mentioned that a fourth round was the most likely comp pick and that it would have hampered FA to count on it.
Let's not forget that in his last game, Landry started a brawl. He threw punches.....after being told time and time again to walk away. And even after the fact, after he gets himself thrown out and contributes to his team losing, he insists that it was the other guy's fault. He grabbed my facemask....so I had to beat him up. That's a child's mentality. For those saying how much we lost in this deal, consider this- Landry was tied for 4th in TD's league-wide, he led the way in catches and he was 2nd in yards after the catch. That all sounds great, until you realize he was 17th in total yards and completely outside the top 40 on yards per catch. Think about that. More catches than anyone, more opportunities than anyone, and he does great after he gets the ball. So how the hell is he 17th in total yards? It's because he was basically a running back catching screens. And the only time he really impressed was in the red zone.....which we rarely found in the first place. My friends, I used to like Landry a heck of a lot, but his numbers are one of the biggest lies in the NFL. Combined with his crap attitude and inability to get open when facing even minimal coverage, losing him was the best possible thing that could have happened in Miami. To me, a 4th and a 7th was a pure gift because we had no intention of honoring that franchise tag to begin with- we played poker and bluffed.
Look no further than the signing of Jay Cutler. We all know who spearheaded that stank bullsh*t. Also didn't help that Parker never materialized, otherwise people wouldn't be sweating this nearly as much.
Wish list on free agency: Big fish: Andrew Norwell Allen Robinson Medium fish: Justin Pugh Small fish: Jordan Mathews Tyler Eifert
All the outrage and "the whole organization is idiots...", but you are correct. We had two choices here. One, keep Landry at 16 million dollars (or give him a Mike Evans type deal)--or trade him for what we could get. There were only two teams interested in Jarvis. I love the guy...he's from my neck of the woods. He plays hard--he's a gamer. But he also has a limited skill set. He's ONLY a slot WR, he doesn't make huge yards and he's not a serious red zone threat. Jarvis Landry at 16 million dollars is the most over paid player in the league. The FO and HC obviously didn't see him in their long term plans. We desperately need the salary cap relief. We got what we could. Great teams are built by drafting great in the middle rounds...you have to hit on some of these picks in rds 3-5. This gives us another chance to get a quality interior lineman or Dline or WR. Gase is going in to year three of a four year project. This offseason we saw some coaching changes, we've upgraded the DE position, we'll see what happens in the draft. But this Landry deal was the best we could get for an expensive player with limited skills.
I mean the way I view this thing is complicated. I think the Dolphins should have taken care of this guy awhile ago so the salary didn't inflate to the point we are at now. However, I also think this guy is playing everyone who supports him as a fool, he just wants money and wants to get it now. Take your pick what side you want to be on but for the MIAMI DOLPHINS as a team right now, it was smart to get rid of this dude now. I saw this as someone who fully supports that we should have taken care of him early and still had this guy. However, time revealed what this guy is really about and that is the money. This guy won't win in Cleveland and his career will not accumulate to anything in the end, sadly. This is a mistake on both sides. Jarvis will just be another name in the end.
It’s extremely fascinating how this front office has managed to turn what was once one of the team’s greatest position of strength, the wide receiver group, and now morph it into one the team’s greatest position of weakness. That’s quite a feat to pull off. I guess we should all thank Mike Tannenbaum.
I don't think the WR corp is a weakness. Obviously the proof will be seen on the field and we're a long way from that, but Adults has been our best receiver, and Grant started to be used more at the end. Isaiah Ford will hopefully be back soon. And let's not forget Drake can catch. There are certainly question marks about a lot of how this will work but I think we could see a lot more variation in our passing game. Especially if we get a decent tight end. Maybe this hasn't been the most convincing case but I'm not concerned about our receivers. If we can keep our QB healthy and upright then I think we'll be fine.
Leonte Carroo is still an unknown. Like I said prior, DeVante Parker is one hangnail away from a few weeks on the DL. Ford is still an unknown, and hopefully right after the injury. The only live body that I really trust is Kenny Stills, basically. He’s also not a number one wide receiver, and for most of his career has not drawn a team’s top corner in coverage. That’s a lot of question marks and turmoil given Landry’s departure. Not to mention still desperately needing a tight end that can stretch the seam.
This, Tbaum is the idiot of all idiots. His stupid trades and idiotic contracts never work out. Our cap situation is a mess and our roster is full of overpaid underperforming players. But Ross is even dumber for keeping him on all this time. He should have been fired two seasons ago.
The thing that has me really concerned is that it is said now we will be aggressive in FA. I know things have to play out and let's see who we get, but thinking about that just doesn't bode well with me. Being crowned the FA champs or runner up hasn't done well for us in the past. With an exception here or there we seem to pay over-the-hill guys who are on their last leg a lot of money while getting little production in return. I need to go back and listen to Travis's and Boomer's podcast where Boomer talked about FA. I can't seem to remember who he said he liked and would be available mostly because I didn't think we would be that active. Now that has changed and FA's are going to be an important part of who we are next year. Start buffing up that off-season award trophy. Baby needs a new pair of shoes.
Do we know they didn't try but Landry wouldn't budge? Sometimes both sides are right and the result just sucks. The Dolphins were right to not pay Landry what he wants and Landry is right to try and get as much money as he can while he can. I mean the Dolphins shouldn't be paying almost 10% of their cap for a slot receiver and Landry has this one shot to make what he can, as most players don't get to their after-rookie deal. We had no leverage with Landry, because there are always teams out there that will pay and we had no leverage with the Browns because they knew we couldn't;t go into next season with Landry at $16 million. Now, new info may come to light that points the blame beam at one or the other party, but based on the information we presently have....
g to This isn't Jarvis' fault either. As a player, this is his opportunity to cash in on his skillset. He doesn't owe anyone anything. He did what he was asked to do here. Why should we as fans expect him to take less? How many of you would take less money to do your job? As for him wanting it now...he probably would have loved it last year, but that isn't the way the CBA works. He had to wait. He waited. Now he's going make 35-40 million up front. Good for him.
If you offered me 2 4th rd picks going into the 2017 season for landry and ajay I would have laughed in your face.Go fiqure!
I disagree. He is partly to blame. It's not like we were offering him chump change. The guy could have fed his family on 12 million a year or whatever we were offering him. If the guy wanted to stay, he could have stayed. Simple as that. I will give him credit for doing what he was asked while he was here. However, that doesn't change the fact that he could have chosen to stay. Last time I checked, it's not law that a person always has to take the highest offer.
He is still under the franchise tag with the Browns. They haven't worked out a deal or even talked about it. Miami just got rid of the "headache" for, essentially, what they would have gotten if they just let him go.
When it comes to the amount of money players want, I generally side with them. The simple fact of the matter is that the salary cap is ridiculously small relative to the amount the owners take in each year. Not too mention, contracts in the NFL often give the team most of the power, plus the league works differently than most businesses in that all the available 'companies" in the NFL work together. Most players never see the total amount of their contracts...ever. Then these guys are generally crapped on by fanbases for being selfish because they don't give a discount to a team that will cut them as soon as there's a better player. At the same time, teams have are given a fixed amount of resources to build their team. Every dollar spent on X is a dollar less to spend on Y.
Love Juice, just glad we got value for him (we seem to have a fetish for 4th round picks). He's definitely one of my favorite all time Dolphins, but I also understand that this came down to being a business decision for both sides. I hope he does well in Cleveland, i'm glad he went there, that's a team that I really don't have a problem with. I like the Browns, and i'm also ecstatic that he didn't go to a team I hate like the Jets, Pats, Ravens, or the Dallas Shemales. It makes the breakup easier I guess lol. I'm not necessarily worried about the receiving core. That was an actual strength that we had, and there were/are five capable players on this team at that position. I'm going to bet that either Grant or Carroo will step in and succeed at the slot next season. Both are ready to make a significant jump in this league and I expect both to get a fair opportunity. Like I said, we had the depth and at the end of the day Landry just wasn't worth that kind of money. More power to the Browns if they want to pay that, but I think we did the right thing here as hard as it was to do. In regards to free agency, I hope we're are smart with this newly acquire cap space. No....we don't need to throw money at a receiver that replaces Landry. I honestly think Gase and co will bet on Carroo and Grant before we do something like that. We can use this cap space to possibly swing big on the offensive line which I think is still....once again in desperate need of improvement.
Landry is in a much better situation now than he was with the Dolphins. With Dorsey running the Browns front office and all the picks they have this year and the young talent already on their roster, the Browns are going to be an up and coming team starting in 2018. It will not surprise me in the least if the Browns are in the playoffs by 2019. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, they still have Tannebaum running their front office. Therefore they will be lucky to if they don’t replace the Browns as the worst team in the league in the very near future. Tannebaum completely ruined the Jets and left them in Cap Hell before the owner of the Jets finally realized he was not fit to be in his position with the Jets and fired him. Ross has no idea what he is doing as an NFL owner and therefore he decided to hire the incompetent Tannebaum as Head of football operations. The Dolphins will be lucky to win as many games this year as they did last year in 2017. Hopefully Ross will finally decide that the Dolphins will never be more than mediocre at best under his ownership and he will decide to sell the team to someone who actually knows how to hire competent individuals to run the football team. My prediction for the 2018 season is a record of 5-11. I have no faith in Tannebaum, Grier, and Gase when it comes to signing upgrades in free agency or upgrading the talent through the draft.
Yeah, he's worth more than the 4th and 7th we got for him. But he's not worth $16m. He's to blame for this, not the Dolphins. The Dolphins offered him a very good, long term contract and he thought he was worth more. He's not. He'll get his one year $16m and be in the same situation he is right now if he wants a long term $16m/year deal.
Sadly I agree with you.Look at the bills brandon beane in first year as GM in buffalo. The bills make the playoffs in first season and now have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds to build off of.In year 4 of the tannebaum era we are looking at 3rd place at best in this division. My big fear is the bils will take mayfield who I feel will be a stud in this league for a long time.
