Technically it will last 10 years but Sony typically releases a new console every 6 years. PS1-1994, PS2-2000, PS3-2006. So 2012 should see the next Playstation.

Generally yes but I don't think we'll see another one that soon given that the PS3 is a powerhouse and it will probably take them longer to see profits on the console then it has in the past. Unless the next playstation goes in a different direction somehow.

There won't be as big of a rush to get another console out, until display technology (unless they use a new direction in console like you said) offers a reason to come out with another one. As it is, all the next console has to look forward to is 3D or more integrated motion use. 3D capable HDTVs are even less common than HDTVs, and will be for a while I imagine.

Ultra-high-def/super hi-vision (2160p) is the next step (aside from 3D), and 3D is probably closer to be realized than UHD, since UHD isn't even looking to hit broadcasting until 2015 (at best probably).

There's also software/hardware being developed that will allow people with 3D capable tvs to use 360's and PS3's to play their games in 3D, whereas PCs were the only capable devices before. http://www.next3d.com/NEXT_3D.html

The PS3 should have a long life cycle though, for real. The video and audio technology available is already being maximized with the ps3. There is little aside from better hard drives, faster processors, and more RAM that they can do for the system. Those things would help make performance smoother for sure, but there definitely wouldn't be a huge leap at all IMO. Not enough to justify a new console. Just look at the vids for FFXIII or GoW3, and you can see what the system is capable of.

A re-design of the ps3 seems most logical (in the same vein as the ps2 slim and how xbox has the falcon, jasper, and the possibly upcoming vallhalla chipsets) if anything.

I really think this generation, at least the ps3, has the longest life cycle for sure. Wii has the shortest (technologically speaking).

Further backing up my idea that the PS3 and 360 should have long life cycles (or ps3 at very least):
