Here's where selection bias comes in. You're picking contributors but ignoring the washouts. Those represent a very small fraction of mid to late round backs. Divide them by the total and you get the very definition of rare.

I arbitrarily picked 2008's draft and came up with 14 mid to late round backs who either suck or aren't even in the NFL.

I know what you're saying but there are wash outs in every round. I feel its just must easier to find a serviceable to above average starter at that position than any other.

I was wondering about this with my son, if I should push the dolphins, but we are supposed to protect our children from pain and misery so i'm not so sure right now.....
