time..I spoke of this yesterday. In Florida's pioneer days, before the arrival of Flaglers and Plants railroads, none of the pioneers carried a watch or even cared what "time" of day it was. At the arrival of the RR's, all of a sudden there were schedules.. arrival and departure times..suddenly you HAD to know what time of day it was.... in the mind of many,mine included, the pioneer days of Florida ended with the arrival of the RR's.

 

You and Carl Hiaasen must sit on your dock and commiserate.

How could I resist a character like "Serge A. Storms"...

Carl lives in Vero now and someday I will get to meet him outside of those 100 dollar book signings. Not only have I loved Carl's bent and characters, Skink being my favorite and the character "I" indentify with in his stories, but I think I have a pretty good story line for him.

Many years ago, when Billy Powell, more commonly known as Osceola (a white man bastardization of Asi-ahola, "black drink speaker") was dying in Charleston, his attending physician was Dr. Weedon. When Osceola died, unknown to others, and without permission the good doctor cut off Osceola's head, and preserved it in a large jar. It is said he would put it on the dresser in his childrens room a night to make them behave. It was supposed to have been burned in a museum fire (the American museum in NY? memory fails) and lost forever.

When I was a young lad, a buddy of mine Dale, claimed his dad had dug up Osceola's bones in Charleston and was hiding them out in the glades. He owned the Pit BBQ out on the Trail, his brother Shivers BBQ in Homestead and his bro in law was Shorty's BBQ on US 1 at Kendall. (these were the early Miami BBQ kings) Anyway, when we camped out in the glades the possibility of Oscelos ghost roaming around the glades was discussed around the fire looking for his bones.

Just imagine what Carl Hiiassen could do with Icabod Osceola roaming the glades looking for his head... maybe connect him with Skink after he licked a Bufo..

Dr Jerald Milanich wrote a magazine article called Osceola's Head in the Jan/Feb 2004 issue of Archaeology that covers Dales dad's involvement..he dug up the wrong grave, and some other clues.. Castro may have it according to one.
