Man, when I was in college, I couldn't put on weight to save my life. Now that I've hit 40 and don't care about it anymore, I'll gain a pound just by lookin' at a pizza. :pity:

I remember stating that when I was 40. Now that I'm 46, I yearn for the days of 40. The biggest difference, in my early 40s, I would gain the weight quickly, but then I could still lose it and get down to an acceptable level (lose 5 lbs in couple of weeks). Now that I'm 46, no such luck.

Plus you brew your own beer. That adds a few inches right there.

Too true. It's a win-lose situation. The better I get at brewing, more I'm going to drink, more weight I gain.

Figure out a way to become gluten intolerant and that’ll cure your problem in a hurry, lol. My body has reached the point where the only beer it can somewhat tolerate is Bud Light. A blessing and a curse.

I have....never had that problem, sadly. After I went through puberty, my body decided that it wanted to gain weight pretty badly. Starting when I went to college, I realized that I had to both exercise AND diet to keep from gaining too much. I actually wasn't able to lose weight, and get down below around 190, until I was diagnosed as diabetic and went on meds.

Of course now that I'm 40, I'm busting my rear end to stay at 190, after getting down below 170 about five years ago. It just gets harder.

I also saw my eye doctor this week and told her about a few new problems that I've been having. She just kind of smirked and said "well, you did pass a certain threshold last month....". Officially old.

I've lost eight pounds this week. My secret? My wife quit her job and is now cooking all of our meals at home. And I'm like duh....of course I eat less of your food than when we hit Longhorn, Pizza Hut or Wild Wings. We've been doing seasoned chicken and veggies for about two weeks not and it seems to be helping.

I'm down to 301 but I need to be in the 250's maximum. I'm still searching for the secret though at 44...I bust my *** in the gym, eat decent and gain a pound or two a week. My clothes continue to fit better but the weight just doesn't want to come off (except for this week). And all my lab tests look good...it just sucks getting older since the body slows down.

Question- have any of you researched the testosterone supplements? I see a lot of commercials lately and I'm curious if there's any science behind it...and of course if it's safe.

I know it's easier said than done, but the only way you'll lose weight is to take in less calories than you burn. If you're gaining weight you're eating more than your body needs. However, if your clothes are fitting better this may mean that you're gaining muscle and muscle will burn fat.

The hard thing of course is figuring out how much you're burning, because everyone is different. Even when I was young, I could change my diet and eat only unsatisfying food that tasted bland, go as little as 1500 calories a day, not drink beer, and still not lose weight if I didn't exercise.

If I exercise five times a week, then I can eat my usual 2000 calories and still lose weight gradually. Diet + hard exercise is the only thing thats ever been truly effective for me personally.

Yeah, I figured that I was adding muscle and that's a good thing- I just need to get the scales moving in the opposite direction as well. It's my own fault for being a workaholic and spending too much time in front of a computer screen, so I think it's just a matter of overcoming that through cardio over time. I have no idea why I finally dropped 8 pounds this week but I'm hoping that it's breaking through that plateau I've been stuck at for so long. I'm crossing my fingers anyway.

One thing I've learned though is that I wasn't eating enough- it's not just calories in vs calories out. For the past 7 years, I've had a Pepsi for breakfast, a Pepsi for lunch and then ate a regular dinner...that's all I was really hungry for and my body was fine with it. My doctor told me off though and said to eat anything for breakfast- even if it's horrible like a double chocolate muffin, and then have something sensible for lunch. Once I started eating more, I started getting hungry again....and then the weight started coming off.

The doctor explained that I was in starvation mode and no matter what I ate, my body would hang on to everything it could. So I got fat by eating less than 2k calories a day (sometimes way less)...just because I wasn't eating at the right times to maximize my metabolism.

This is a friend of a friend's website- he's one of the leading US experts in fitness and nutrition. His free videos helped me a lot a few months back and his paid system is basically portion control with the right types of foods. I'm probably starting his plan next month- http://markmacdonald.tv/

    Key,

There’s more then one way to lose weight. Personally, I try and take in my calories during breakfast and lunch so the body has time throughout the day to work those off. Anything I eat at night is either fruit or milk and cookies (shaddup!). Any food in moderation is ok, but I never buy potato chips or soda since self control is non-existent once I get started lol. Anything is ok in moderation but moderation is not a subjective term when it comes to nutrition...you have to read and follow the serving sizes recommended on the packaging. And no, single serve packages don’t make it healthier, it just means you can’t go crazy and eat a ridiculous amount of your favorite junk food.

I’ve always been of the opinion that cardio is the enemy of weight loss because of the chemicals it causes your body to produce. When I do cardio, I swim. Stressful cardio can be good, like wind sprints or playing basketball. Running for miles is not good for everyone as your body can become bloated.

The reason you’re gaining weight while lifting is because muscle weighs 4x more then fat and protein has more calories per gram then fats or carbs. It doesn’t mean you should eat fats or carbs. Your body will always burn carbs and fats first. For many people though, myself included, weight loss and working out need to be done sequentially. In other words, some people need to first lose the weight then build a better body. Walk briskly or swim to burn the calories you take in before you start lifting. Carry a 1 liter water bottle with you everywhere...you should be filling that 7-8x a day. That will squash any hunger besides your meals...if you have to snack, it should be fruit or some thing reasonable (granola, certain nuts like cashews and almonds are healthy, etc). Stay away from grease and sugary candy. Meals should be lean proteins (fish, chicken, turkey) and should be baked not fried. And no, you shouldn’t eat the fat. Meat should be a once a week deal unless you cook it well done to burn the fat but I don’t like hockey puck hamburger or a steak that tastes like a leather belt hence why I said once a week.

Lastly, go to your local health food store and do a body cleanse. GNC has one for like $40 that’s filled with healthy probiotics and you’ll drop 5lbs just from that lol.

Hope there’s some stuff in there you can use. :)

Luckily I don't go for junk food often UNLESS it's in the house....so we just don't buy it (well, we buy crap the kids like and I don't like). But you're 100% right, my main problem has been skipping breakfast, skipping lunch and then having a big dinner. The body doesn't work like that and it's a great recipe for gaining weight.

Here's my big problem- I have a bulging disc in my lower back that goes insane after about 1/4 mile of walking. So for now, I'm limited to exercise bikes...I grind out about 30-45 minutes a day. It doesn't feel like I'm getting anywhere though other than the workout value for my legs. Sure, I might breathe hard as I "sprint" the last quarter mile....but it's not real cardio.

It's a catch 22 though- to avoid surgery, I need to walk A LOT and lose weight. But I can't walk and most physicians think surgery is not the answer anymore since you're fusing the spine and limiting yourself. Dieting, lifting weights and the exercise bike isn't cutting it though....on an average week, I'm breaking even or gaining a pound. I know it's good weight (muscle) and muscle ultimately burns fat, but it's just frustrating when you're doing everything right and the scale doesn't agree.

I'm guessing the back limitations would go away around 270 pounds...so dropping 30 is the immediate goal and then I can get serious. I jogged 4 miles a day in my 20's so I want to run (or even walk), I just can't right now and that's the frustrating part.

I've been drinking about a gallon of either water and/or tea with splenda for about six months now and I don't eat bad...except maybe for breakfast. I am never hungry in the mornings but I'll eat something like a bagel with cream cheese if it's here, so the doctor told me to eat it. For lunch I usually have a Healthy Choice steamer....which is insanely good people! Very low calories and the flavors will surprise you. For a $3 quick lunch, you can't beat it.

A health nut buddy of mine out in LA has been pushing me to do a juice cleanse...I've been thinking about it. I'll check out GNC too though and see about the body cleanses. I've tried a couple of different colon cleanses over the years and that DID NOT end well! LOL, those things are evil!

I appreciate all the advice though...there were some great nuggets in there!

Some gyms have pools with in water treadmills. If you can find one that would be a good option id guess if you need a low stress workout for your back.

Growing so DAMN TIRED of listening to these MORONIC BLOWHARDS pushing the ridiculous narrative that it's the AR-15 that's responsible for these mass shootings, not the psychopathic kid but the gun itself, as if the weapon is telepathically whispering in the kid's ear "Hey, buy me buy me, then go all Rampage in a school with me!!"........ or as if, if the AR-15 didn't exist, these psychotic kids would think "man, I got no semi-auto rifle so I might as well not go through with it, ho-hum."........... Or that, if the AR-15 didnt exist, a pair of 45's with extended clips wouldn't cause mass damage in a crowded confined space. If a kid is determined to inflict serious damage and the AR-15 weren't available, he will find another way. He'll make homemade bombs that kill twice as many kids.

Here's an idea: how about changing this country's health approach to preventative based medicine rather than pharmaceutical based so that this country isn't being pumped full of neurological altering drugs that are rampantly fu**ing with this collective nation's mental/psychological state. Then have parents actually do a better job rearing our kids.

I've read history books. I'm smart enough to heed their warnings, and I'm certainly not ignorant and naïve enough to believe that history cant or wont repeat itself here. If the day ever comes that this country needs to defend itself, or if the citizens ever need to defend ourselves against our own govt, and society and freedom as we know it are at stake, then we are going to need every firearm we can get, especially if we ever have to square off against our own military. Aint nobody ever won a war or conflict without being weaponized. Look at some of these nations that are struggling during conflicts bc their citizens aren't weaponized, with them desperately relying on countries like America to supply them. That could be us one day.

    Here's my opinion.

I'm a combat Marine vet. I own 3 AR's and many other semi-auto rifles and handguns. I conceal carry every day. I am a member of the NRA. Guns aren't the problem... per se.

However, I think the "AR" style weapons are empowering today's youth. I hate to say it, but this guy could have done the same damage, or worse, with a few handguns or shotguns. But...the AR empowered him. The truth is, the AR is no more lethal than a mini-14, or a 30/30, or a .30-06 or any of the other hundreds of types and calibers of rifles. But...the AR empowers people. Why? Probably because they are hyped up as an "assault weapon". They are called a "military style" weapon. Neither are true. But...it empowers people.

Better background checks need to happen. MANDATORY training and psych evals need to happen. It's time. Not because of "guns", but because we as a society have become apathetic and callous. These two things go against nearly all gun enthusiasts beliefs. They (we) like to tout "It's a slippery slope". Well...at this point I just don't give a ****. Yes, "guns" are a right, but not for the untrained or mentally unstable. If I have to jump through hoops to own one and it saves a school from being shot up I'm all for it.

interesting take and makes some sense. So essentially you're implying that the media and govt blowhards who continue to GLORIFY these AR-15's in their pursuit to ban them, are ironically actually serving to empower our youth to use these weapons and go on these rampages that we're trying to prevent. hmph.

Shared sentiment on the last paragraph.

Why are all these news analyst idiots treating this rifle as though it's equivalent to a .50 caliber? This one idiot just called it an automatic weapon.... and another one asked "how do we possibly let such a powerful weapon onto our streets?!" At least report sh** accurately instead of pulling nonsense out of your arse.

Yes. The lies and hyperbole about this particular rifle is why it’s the weapon of choice for crazies. One of my handguns is a .357 revolver. It holds 5 rounds. This guy shot kids from very close range while they were in large groups. Give me a couple of speed loaders and my .357 and I’d do more damage than he did. Yes, that’s with training, but the point is, he could have killed a dozen people with the same handgun. He didn’t choose a handgun, however, because the AR has reached mythical levels.

And let me just say... my AR’s are not like the M-16 or M4 I carried in the Marines and am AR is NOT an assault rifle.

But I am just tired of all of this. People need mandatory training and mandatory psych evals...This goes against most gun owners beliefs, but this is a great way to prevent these thins from happening.
