What would you guys think of drafting this guy. In my opinion he's worthy of a first round pick. we all know our o-line continues to need help, LT is a huge position. This guy has given up only one sack all year, only has i believe one penalty against him, and basically all of michigan's running plays are designed to his side because he's a beast and one heck of a blocker. if we trade down, would you consider taking him?? I know we need help on D, but how can you pass up on a monster "franchise" LT, similar to what the jets did with ferguson a few years ago... Just a question for you to ponder...
Alot of people either dont think he's a prospect up there with some of the recent LTs, and some dont consider him a LT at all. I dont like the idea, personally. Carey did a good job at LT. The draft is full of Tackle prospects, I'd rather the team take a bigger need in a DL considering the prospects there are stronger at #1 IMO and find a Right Tackle with a later pick.
thats what ive been thinking all year. I'm a michigan fan, so i've seen an awful lot of him the last few years, he's always levelling someone, he's never getting beat, and he's in great shape.. we need some of them offensive lineman that stick around for a long time, we've got satele, he's worked out great for us. why not get another solid O-lineman in there keep building around them. afterall, most of our poor QB play was based on poor blocking this year. its the same thing thats plagued our running game for years, although, yes... we were much improved this year. but LT is such an important position on the line... id love to bring this guy in
Definately a good player but i don't know how much the Jets fans like D'Brick right now. They actually call him D'Bust.
I don't think it's fair to say Long can't play LT. He's given up 1 sack all year, and has not been penalized. Hell when he played RT as a Soph and got hurt, the O-Line could not block anybody. Although I say wait for the senior bowl to say he can't play LT since Big 10 does not have a lot of great pass rushers
u never know, jake long may be like brady quinn....he may fall. u dont draft an RT real high....and im sure lots of teams know that. he may not do so well in the combines, WHO KNOWS?! perhaps he falls all the way to #15, id trade up and pick him immediately.
Topic should read "Jake Long, RT from Michigan," because the guy will not be playing LT in the NFL. Ryan Clady will. Jeff Otah will. Jake Long will not. Jake Long is an NFL right tackle, and you have to wonder why in the hell we'd spend the #1 overall pick on a right tackle. Long has been abused with frightening regularity this year, and did the J-O-B to Vernon Gholston two years in a row. If you get knocked around in college as Long does, you simply cannot be an NFL left tackle.
you are no where near correct. how can you say a guy whos only given up one sack, and has only one penalty against him has been knocked around all year?? come on...
Yea i think he would be good to bring in and then Bring in Fanca to and move Carey to the RT and we would have a pretty good O-Line
I think it is fair to call him a bust as he shouldn't be getting dominated like he is now, he also seems to be too thin.
he gave up 1 sack to Gholston this year, and that was his only sack and he hasn't been penalized all year. How can you say he's regularly abused?!? If you're going to say someone sucks, atleast use true facts
I don't see that, but I don't think there were any signs that Gallery would be as big a bust as he is.
MANY NFL scouts don't think Jake Long has the athleticism to be a successful left tackle in the NFL. He will be a RT imo. He may do well as a left tackle in college but it's an entirely different world in the NFL.
can someone explain to me what on earth is the difference between RT and LT, besides one is right, the other is left. i dont quite get why someone is an excellent RT, but not LT. they are both doing the same job, protecting the QBs side (or blind side) from defensive ends usually. they both gotta be tall, quick, good feet, good hands. i dont get it...
Left tackles play against the premier pass rushers in the league and protects the quarterback blindside.
oh so the better guys like michael strahan and javon kearse go on the right side (our left side). well what if ur Mark Brunell or some other left handed guy, u need a good RT to protect ur blindside.
Sacks and penalties don't tell the whole story. He's gotten beat quite a few times this season. Forcing the quarterback to make bad throws or flushed out of the pocket. The #1 overall pick should be able to block anyone, never get beat and just be a great athlete. With all that said Jake Long is none of that. Draft Chris Long, Gholston or DOrsey. Please no Jake Long
That is why the Cardinals drafted Levi Brown with the 5th pick, to play right tackle and protect Leinart's blindside.
I've watched every Michigan game for the past couple years. Trust me, Long is not the problem on the OL. Never has been
I don't see Jake Long as the #1 pick of the draft. If we can't trade down we'll take the best defensive player on the board. As of now that is either Dorsey or Long. We'll see who the Tuna likes.
Jake Long looked good against the Gators. Something to consider, Parcells like mammoth offensive linemen. Long may fit.
Because Shelton is a crappy RT? It all starts up front though, we need to draft a LT this year, whether that be Long or someone else.
Carey was pretty solid for most of the season and toward the end the entire line started to slip. They will only get better next year in my opinion so I'm not sure a LT NEEDS to be drafted. I do agree that we might have to draft someone on the line, but not necessarily a LT.
I dunno what that guy is talking about since a lot of teams rotate which side their premier ends rush from. We do it a lot too with JT.
Au contraire: While I agree that Carey has played pretty solid (albeit not more), he was a Pro Bowl kind of player at RT. Drafting a left tackle wouldn't only improve one position, but two as it would allow us to say goodbye to crappy LJ Shelton and move Carey back to where he played his best football. In addition, "solid" just doesn't cut it when it comes to a position like LT. A good left tackle elevates every aspect of the offense game; see Joe Thomas in Cleveland who was easily their MVP and made Anderson and Lewis look like Pro Bowlers. I'm not sure I like Jake Long at #1 although he actually has the ability to eventually play LT in the pros in my opinion. The problem with Jake is that he isn't a day 1 starter (at least not at LT; I think he would make an outstanding LG in his rookie year) and essentially will need one or two years to become a good starter at left tackle. That's not what you are looking for with the #1 overall. You want (and in our case need) a player who will make a lot of impact on a skill position right away. Jake isn't that kind of player.
which is why we are in the shape we are in on the OL. We havent spent any early picks on OL in a long while. except Carey and Satele, who are our best 2 OL, by the way. Coincidence????? I think not. We should spend ALL of our early picks on OL. It doesnt matter WHO is passing or running, if you cant block and protect them. Carey did an attiquite job at LT. Nothing more. How many times was our QB sacked or pressured from that side?? I bet it was alot. You can have all the 'sexy' skill pos. players you want, but you wont go anywhere until you get an OFFENSIVE LINE.
I agree wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, you just can't (well, shouldn't) massivly overdraft a need position, especially not with the #1 overall. If there was a Joe Thomas in the draft, I'd be the first to say go get him. Alas, Jake Long isn't Joe Thomas. If Parcells thinks otherwise, by all means, go get him. But don't invest 60 plus million in a development guy just because he's filling a need. If you wanna draft need, do it in the 2nd round - not in the top 10.
I don't think you'll see J Long go to us at #1 , not with Parcells... (wrongstat maybe, if he throws in a 4th). If we can trade down 3 or 4 spots then maybe, and we'll get more picks.
Jake Long will be a top 5 pick. If we want him we may have to reach and take him as the first pick. He's big, physical, and intellingent. He doesn't beat very often. I would love to see Jake Long as our LT for the next 10 - 12 years.
