Is John Beck's shot over?

Again this year we were promised a quarterback competition. Again it looks like that's not going to be the case. Obviously Chad is the starter. McCown is prolly out. But it appears as if Henne is solidified as the QB of the future. Beck has been given almost no chances this pre-season whereas Henne has been given lots of chances and done little with them in the games. So is this what we have to look forward to or am I just being overly cynical?

I am pretty sure Beck's shot was over the second they signed Pennington because I have absolutely no doubt that almost as soon as Henne was drafted Beck was #2 already.

I was/is a fan of Beck. I think its apparent Henne is playing WAY better right now. Beck get flustered too easily and tends to panic. Seems like Beck is thinking too much or something. Hes too smart for his own good. Henne stands in the pocket, shrugs off tackles, and throws accurate darts. I thought (and hoped) Beck would be the QB of the future, but as of now hes very shaky. I want the best man to be our QB, and Henne looks way better even as a rookie.

Overly cynical it is. There was a QB competition right from the start of camp between Beck, McCown and Henne. For being "experienced" neither beck or McCown did anything with their time. Dont you recall the early weeks of TC where our 3 qb's rotated in and out daily with the starting units? It happened. Henne, who wasnt miles better than everyone else, got the attention of the staff for coming in as a rookie, and playing as well as, if not better than his competition. Its clear that he probably isnt ready to start, Beck nor McCown obviously didn't impress the staff with anything they showed, then a pretty darn good, intelligent, leadership kind of starting QB became available who could, and probably will out perform any of the 3 guys on our roster was brought in. He is Chad Pennington obviously, and he's the starter. His experience, and resume alone wins him the starting job.

Just because the results of the QB competition didnt lead to one of the original 3 winning the job, doesnt mean it didnt happen. These 3 guys (henne, beck, mccown) all had their shots in TC... lets face it... two of them, just didnt get it done enough to impress the coaches. Thats who's impressions matter... the coaches.

I wouldn't say Henne hasn't done anything to earn his spot. He has played pretty well all things considered. Beck is a leftover from the last regime. And when you are a leftover from a regime that went 1-15 in their only season with the team, it is a lonely place to be.

His shot in Miami is essentially over, barring some type of horrendous injury bug.

I agree with Samphin, his shot with Miami is done. He needs to get out of here and find another team. Do I want that ? Not really because like I have said before, he is a guy that you'd want as your best friend, I really like the guy. I wanted him to succeed.

But, I want the Dolphins to win more, and if that means Beck has to go elsewhere, then so be it.

I don't think Beck's shot is over. Not yet anyway. The only "shocking" development about the quarterback situation is that Chad Pennington is the starter. That's it. There was no other change in the depth chart. Despite Chad Henne's impressive performance against the Jaguars, Beck is still list ahead of him on the depth chart.

    Exactly right.

Beck and McCown both had the same opportunity offered to them as Henne. Plain and simple... as veteran QBs, they didn't take advantage, and they have no one to blame but themselves.

Aside of a couple of isolated practice sessions I never recall hearing that Beck was blowing anybody away - just that he was blowing all TC and that's not the dude I want as my QB this season.

Even at his best he couldn't displace a rookie in TC with receivers, offensive linemen, running backs he knew. If anything those elements plus being exposed to the pro game should have left him a league above a rookie even coming into a new coaching regime.

But here's the thing though: In less time, the coaching staff were able to determine our starting line, our starting defensive ends, and our starting QB. If it was blatantly obvious that Chad Henne was better, it wouldn't take him THIS long to bump him the depth chart.

okay, i see what youre saying. I'm not defending one player over another here. I just thought thats how Sparano was still listing our QB's, aside from acknowledging that CP was indeed the starter now... Im sure the depth chart at QB will be solidified after the saints game, or at least after cuts start being made. Just have to wait and see until then i guess.

My immediate thought is purely clerical. Pennington is the starter.

Either he is listed at #2 to elevate trade status or they are just in alphabetical order until he's dumped to the sidewalk.

Beck is likely toast here, Henne is the future and Pennington is the present. Beck must be hoping for a shot at being traded to a team where he'll get the coaching and have a real shot at starting. But frankly he has shown me little other than all the great stuff off the field. But he just doesn't seem to be able to do it on the field of play.

I like him too, enough to hope he gets traded somewhere he gets a real shot. I also hope we get a decent DP in return for him.

I'd hardly call Beck experienced. That aside, the competition ceased to exist when Pennington was signed...end of story for Beck and McCown. Period... Henne is their boy, so he got the remaining time allotted to the QBs that Pennington won't need to get ready for the season...

This is the one point of contention that I have about this regime. I don't fault them for bringing in Pennington, as he is a better option than any of the other three, but I do have issues with the why they stopped the competition, even if it were for the #2 spot..bottom line is that Henne hasn't earned it, he was given the opportunity...

That is Tunaland and Sparano's decision and if that is the what they call 'competition'....well we just have to live with it...anyone who thinks that Beck and McCown really got a legitimate shot couldn't be more wrong...

It won't matter from here on out except to those two guys and Mr. H, who has already shelled out the money to get these guys...Parcells seems to be content with the decisions made and seems to have explained it to Mr. H...if they all have no problems with it...I guess we shouldn't as fans....

Still...would have been nice to see a competition...

Pretty much, the thing of it is, Beck is not "done" so to speak, Qb's get injured, rookie TC phenoms are not a new thing.

Pennington came because of unexpected events. Who knew that the Packers would actually trade Favre... to the Jets no less...

Pennington became available and with our QB position in shambles, why not give the job to Pennington? Beck is basically a rookie as last year wasn't exactly a learning experience...

Beck was given just as much of a shot as Henne. He just didn't do enough with his chances.

IMO he would probably do better in a west coast offense type team.

Quick reads, 2-3 step drops might cater more to his strengths. If he has strengths in the pro game...

He might just not have what it takes at this level. We'll have to wait & see how his career plays out.

Beck is like the kid that's left standing during musical chairs.

We've got Pennington locked in as our starter.

We've got Henne that has looked promising in preseason.

We've got McCown as our emergency QB when Pennington gets injured.

Yeah, well I think it's pretty clear that expecting a little objectivity mixed with a little reality dosen't play when it comes to fans deciding which rookies are clearly going to make it or not.

Henne was deemed a God after 2 preseason games.
If he has a few more performances like that 3rd game, we'll start to see "Henne is a bust, cut him and sign Quincy Carter before it's too late to get him!" posts popping up.

I don't recall anybody deeming Henne a god. Fact is, nobody out of the 3 QBs we had on our roster was ready to be a starting QB in the NFL. Henne was probably the closest, and that's concerning considering he's the rookie of the group. That's why Pennington was brought in. To be our starting QB until Henne is ready to take the reigns. I'm hoping we don't have to see Henne under center until next season. Let's develop a young QB right for once!

I just checked & I haven't seen any posts claiming he was a god either. :shifty:

He is the back-up QB, I haven't seen anyone claiming he should be the starter either. He is clearly not ready to start, or at least Pennington is much better suited right now to start.

But there are still plenty of guys who will go all the way out on a limb and we're talking about one LONG 20 foot limb here, and say Beck should not only start but that he will be GREAT, GREAT I say. :pointlol:

That statement is the key to the kingdom. Beck was shellacked and shell-shocked last season, got his mechanics worked over during the off-season, and then got reminded that he was last year's news when Henne was drafted.

There was little to no preparation by Cameron in regards to Beck before he was thrown to the lions, and no real chance to get his feet back under him and recover once the season was over. Beck has been :nutkicker: the past year and a half, and it's going to take a while for him to recover mentally. I just don't think he's the kind of type-A guy that says "Screw you; I'm awesome, you're not, I'm going to be Mr. Bad-azz QB so everyone can just go lick my *****." Those are the guys that get over this quickly (Brady, anyone??:shifty:), and Beck just isn't one of them.

Beck needs some time to regroup and get his mind right, preferably somewhere else. If he's here, he's going to be reminded every day of his failure(s), percieved or otherwise, and I don't think that's going to be what's best for him or us. If we do that, I think he'll end up like David Carr when he's got the potential to be a lot better IMO. Trade him for a 3-5th (or a couple of O-lineman/DB's) and let him start fresh and develop somewhere else. I think that's another reason they went with Henne. Similar physical skillset(one is not overtly more physically talented than the other), but less mental issues to worry about. Henne has the chance to start out right with the right people around him/running things.

So, while Beck may not have been given a totally fair shot, they've got an opportunity to do right by him before the season is over with. Let's see if they give it to him.

..and you would lose said money. I assume you are being sarcastic but in case you aren't, the last thing NE needs is another "green" QB who wets his pants facing a pass rush.

It's hard to work up much righteous indignation over the "lack of competition" at QB when we're getting the productivity we are from the position.

I don't think Beck is exactly Billichik's 'type' of player. :pointlol:

If it weren't for that guy that the 49'ers found I'd say he would be perfect over there. Maybe Seattle or the Eagles will get him. He really does seem better suited for that quick, short, timing, west coast offense. He seems too nervous to stand in the pocket for more than 3-4 seconds.

The guy was a consensus 2nd Round pick last year. 2nd round picks don't grow on trees. As soon as they cut him he will be snatched up. Hell they might even get a pick but that's unlikely this time of year.

FO's made at least two mistakes already, if they cut Beck it'll be their 3rd you can take that to the bank!

You make a great point here. One that has not been considered when people make the John Beck might be the next Steve Young or Brett Favre arguments (an argument that is a HUGE reach, IMO). For those QBs to have realized there success a change of scenery was necessary. So while it is possible for John Beck to become a success at QB in the NFL, odds are it won't happen if he remains here.

I don't think they will cut him, I think they want to get some value for him. He must be worth at least a 4th or 5th round draft pick.

The problem that I see with keeping him is, what will he be able to effectively do?

He can't exactly run the scout team, if he does how prepared will our defense be?

I think they are a very capable FO. They kept Romo for a number of years, so they must be able to see & project NFL talent. They did a superb job on our draft. The only real mistake I see has been signing Wilford for so much money, he may still show up in the season though. I think it is way too early to say that they are making mistakes.
