Maybe it was a freak thing with the rain.I have the same Modem and during a few bad storms,it was doing wierd things. Besides those few times, the Modem has been very dependable.
Nah bro they won't say anything because if they do then they'll get a TON of calls for credit. As it is Comcast (which is Craptastic! btw) was down for a few hours for me on Monday morning. I didn't bother to call this time but 'magically' everything was fine when I checked it in the afternoon. It all depends on the Customer Service agent you get...if they are honest or not. If all lights are green and good to go except for the Internet light then you can almost be sure its them. You can go here and see if others are having problems in your area (or with your ISP in general): http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all
Maybe, I'v never really had a problem with it and it is dependable like you said. I hope this is just becasue of the rain and their own problems.
Thanks man. The lights are not looking good right now. USB and DSL lights are blinking while Internet and Ethernet are not even on.
You have a Westell right? Through At&t...it should be model# 327W. They are pretty solid so I wouldn't really blame it yet. When I was up there in Tampa I had Verizon go out for me once for 24 hours+ and sometimes when it rained a lot so this doesn't surprise me. See what happens by tomorrow because I dont want to go into full on tech support mode if its your ISP to begin with
And this is exactly why I got sick of all these companies and just got a wireless card for my laptop. Their only excuse is plausible deniability and weather. The card isnt as fast as say fios or something but dammit if this thing hasnt worked everywhere I have been. And since its wireless you know why the thing isnt working if it doesnt work...its either coverage, or the power went out and your laptop isnt charged. Very rarely is it the actual device or anything else. If you go in to a Verizon store and get it, tell em Matt sent you and Ill fax you my card Sorry i cant be more help bro....
OK...so...you obviously have connectivity some of the time, or you wouldn't be able to post...unless you're doing so from a different computer in some other place. My assumption is that you're running XP...I don't have Vista and can't help there at all, but I would imagine the tools there are similar. Tools you should be familiar with: 1) The Command Prompt Do you know how to get there? (i.e. Start, Run, "CMD" should bring up that nice old familiar DOS-looking window) 2) ipconfig /all This wonderful command tells you things like, your IP address, your gateway address, the DNS servers your computer is using, and so forth. 3) ping Great tool for testing connectivity. "ping {fill in ip address}" lets you test connectivity to most anything unless there are firewalls in place that blocks pings. 4) traceroute Great tool for tracing where the actual point of failure is. "traceroute {ip address}" 5) nslookup This command will let you know if you DNS is working and help identify possible ISP problems. While I was in Guam, I'd have network connectivity, but the DNS servers would be crapped out, thus, destroying my ability to surf the web since I couldn't do any web address to ip address translation. Being able to manually configure some DNS servers out on the net helps you work around this issue. 6) Understanding your own internal network setup. If you don't understand how you're set up, your in for lots of problems simply because of a lack of knowledge. Generic toubelshooting questions: - You have a cable modem. Is it directly connected to your computer? Or to a router? - If it's connected to your computer, are you connected via RJ-45 cable (into your network connection on the back) or into the USB port? Wireless? - Do you requre any special software to connect to your ISP? (hopefully the anser is no and that your just need a userid and password) So...there's your starting point. Key things are knowing your IP address, where you're getting it from, and how your DNS is set up.
