Football Outsiders had a nice back and forth between one of their writers and another guy who has studied the Wildcat. It's a good read and I loved this quote: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/walkthrough/2009/walkthrough-get-smart
the main point of a gimmick play is that you don't know that it's coming. the Wildcat is OBVIOUSLY going to happen several times a game, so i'm not sure why ANYone can say it's a gimmick. new things frighten people who are afraid of change or anything that goes against the supposed "way it's supposed to be." eventually the Wildcat will just be a part of the game, and these people will be forced to agree it's the norm. love this article. thanks.
Why is he calling it power football? It's not real football. It's a gimmick. It's trickeration. It's p****y ball. What a dumbass.... Good read otherwise....thanks for passing it on.
Great Article! Finally someone who understands that if the Dolphins get 4 yards a play out of the Wildcat is doing its job. That's what I never understood about hte statistics of it dropping off last year. Yes, it did only average like 4 yards a play, but I will take that as a rushing average. Especially with a dinged up o-line.
A play is a gimmick if the other team isn't expecting it, its used once in a while and its used to trick the other team. Opposing teams know we use it and they have to prepare for it. Its funny you don't hear people calling those two runs by the Jets punter a gimmick. The Wildcat is no more a gimmick than a flea flicker or an end around, or how bout a tackle eligible play?
