Why should he be gone with two seasons of acquiring folks for Philbin ?? We all know it takes a couple to three years for rookies to develop. What happens if the draft and fa class seems very good but we have a multitude of injuries, particularly one to Tanny that keeps us from the playoffs ? Would that then make Ireland a failure?? It just isn't as simple as miss and be fired...

At one point I would have agreed with you. However the salary he commands, the fact there is a suitable replacement in the wings and it's money that could be filled at other positions and the fact we could get a high draft pick for him sews it up for me. It's a bold move, but a smart one. The dumb thing would be to take the risk of signing him to a huge deal and watch injuries continue to eat away at him.

It wasn't in this article - maybe it was Barry Jackson's but someone wrote that they're already talking extension with Reshad Jones. He's not a free agent until the end of 2013, but that's a positive sign IMO.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd still bring back Randy Starks, even if you plan on moving Odrick inside to DT. Tony McDaniel is a free agent, and while Kheeston Randall has eaten some snaps, has he really shown enough to make you go into next season with your DT depth chart looking like:

    1) Soliai
    2) Odrick
    3) Randall

I don't think so. I think even with Starks back, you can still play Odrick at that Closed End position as Coyle's defense has taken more of a hybrid look to it with Olivier Vernon seeing more time due to Misi's injury. I think you need a guy like Odrick who can do that, but you also need someone who can play that end position and allow Odrick to rotate into the middle as well and take snaps there in passing situations. Or, perhaps you try and poach a guy like Pat Sims from the Bengals. He's had some injury issues, but when he's healthy, he's been pretty effective as a 3rd DT for the Bengals.

I'd bring back Hartline, Starks, and Smith in that order, and then see if Reggie is willing to play ball with a favorable contract. If he is, great. If not, thanks for your time in Miami.

I'm curious what the inner mechanics of this actually are. Philbin and Ireland both spoke pretty heavily about building through the draft off-season... Was that something Philbin desires, or was it public relations for a subdued off-season? Or are Ireland and Philbin at cross-purposes?

Paying him so much money for something that Jonathan Martin can do competently for much less is what's absurd. He's too expensive and too big an injury risk.

I'm suggesting letting Smith walk because he's Smith. We would still have Marshall for one of the boundary spots. Dimitri Patterson can fill the slot. Just got to find a guy to put opposite Marshall. I'd love to make a real hard play at the Jaguars Derek Cox if the Jags don't franchise him.

I love Starks but I'd rather we keep Soliai whose contract is up after 2013 and I'd rather get him re-signed and done this offseason instead of letting it drag out. Ireland does a solid job of finding DT's so I'd let Starks walk and see if he can't find the next Starks in FA for cheaper or add a couple developmental guys. Plus I'm big on going after one of the fine 1st round pass rushers that are coming out in this draft not only because it would help Wake....but Wake isn't getting any younger either.

I think what this team needs is a field corner. I think Sean Smith is a fine boundary corner. I think Marshall and Patterson seem more like nickel/slot corner guys. I didn't see the game yesterday, so just going off of Patterson's time with Cleveland. I think Vontae Davis did an okay job of it in 2010, but obviously there was something that made them flop Smith and Davis in 2011 and Kevin Coyle started them off that way in training camp. But, I'm not sure if there's really one in the draft that fills that void. Logan Ryan perhaps? Other than that, I'm not sure.

Sean still can't track the ball in the air and has fits against smaller WR's. Smith is my new "Crowder" obsession ;p Plus we don't know how serious his knee injury is now...he might not be available till July or longer depending on severity (Although ironically that would drive his price down). They gave Marshall a 3 year $16 million contract with I think $6 million guaranteed. So unless they are willing to eat $4 million....it's safe to assume he's got the inside track on at least the #2 spot. Hence why I would love to go hard after someone like Cox. He would solidify the DB's and between him and Jones...our playmakers back there. We could still draft a CB or 2 starting in the 4th or later and let them compete with Carroll etc and see if we can't score with a late round guy also.

Marshall blew as a boundary corner. Smith should be resigned and I think if we let him walk, it'd be the one I would be most bitter towards. Good corners don't come off trees and I really hope ball skills aren't what determines what is a good cornerback to you.

I think we should draft a cornerback early but it would be to start opposite Smith, not Marshall.

I hate the mans attitude and some of his choices. However IF he has been given directive to get the coaches players and he gets that info from Philbin than im ok with him staying. If he tries to find cheap 1 year sparks of lighting for all our missing pieces I will personally hire 10 midgets to smash his car hood while defecating in his parking spot in 2014.

If philbin and scouts say we want this guy and let Ireland do the negoating i guess im ok..

I don't think Ireland cares one way or the other to be honest. He strikes me as a GM that views the draft, FA and trades equally if left to his own devices. Philbin, on the other hand, I'd bet dollars to donuts, prefers building through the draft. Its the way GB does it and it just matches up with his teacher mentality. I've seen a video interview where he discusses his love of teaching and that's what he views his job as..a teacher. He also talks about that's one the number 1 things he wants in player, is that they want to be there. To me that means a player that wants to learn. That's why Davis is gone and Smith will be here next year, IMO.

The only reason I have Marshall staying is that he'd be demoted to the #2 spot and the fact it would cost $4 million to dump him. I'd rather go for a real #1 then re-sign an average at best #2 CB in Smith. Those advocating re-signing Smith are advocating the status quo because you really think Miami is going to drop even more resources into the CB's if they got Smith/Marshall signed to decent money contracts and Dmitri in the nickel? All we would see then is maybe a later round corner added.

Marshall has versatility and his contract isn't exactly huge by any means. Patterson could be gone in 2014 (or 2013 for that matter) so it's poor long term thinking to say we shouldn't re-sign Smith because of Marshall and Patterson.

Marshall was never the #1 CB so I don't see him being demoted to the #2 CB. He was brought in to be a nickel CB in the first place.

Correct me if I'm wrong but was he not the #1 guy to start the season? Marshall's contract is big enough that you just can't immediately say he's gone. That's $4 million in dead money. I'm also not stating we shouldn't re-sign Smith because of those 2...rather that we shouldn't do it because it's Smith whose HIGHLY overrated by folks on this board just like Vontae was. If he wants to re-sign for cheap...then sure....but I'd rather us focus on truly finding a #1 guy which a decent sized Smith re-signing puts a stop to right away.

Smith is his own obstacle and the teams obstacle to upgrading the secondary which he is one of the prime reasons this secondary ranks so lowly.

What does our secondary rank lowly in? To my knowledge they are near the top of the league in most important stats.

Starks should be re-signed. There's something to be said about cohesiveness, and this defense seems to have it the way it currently sits.
