This should be talked about more.

I think people have heard the words but I don't think they understand how significant it is for a team lead by a rookie HC and rookie QB to lose 2 straight overtime games, then turn around and win 3 in a row. Now we hear 30 players showed up to work out on their day off after destroying their hated division rival.........

It is so very much a new era in Miami.

Really this is sounding to me like a team that can make some noise in the playoffs.

I suspect teams that have a well-developed culture that's an extension of the head coach's program and is generated and maintained by player leadership are pretty rare. If those factors are truly at the root of high-level success, as I think they are, then we could indeed be one of the few teams remaining at the end of the season.

I agree. I was happy that we went with Philbin over McCoy.

And all the criticisms about picking up a wrapper or being soft from Hard Knocks never really made sense to me.

This is certainly good to hear about the players showing up on their off day. I would, however, like to know how this compares to other teams' player turnouts on off days. Or even compared to the turnout during the Sparano era.

More impressive to me are the quotes from several players saying the team is buying in to the coaching staff's program. I've covered this team pretty closely for a number of years now, and I don't remember seeing those kinds of quotes from so many players under the other staffs during that period.

I don't remember the buying into the program quotes from players under the previous coaching staffs. So that is true and a good sign.

But I do remember a lot of "the players love playing for Sparano" talk.

I think those two are different, and the former being much more important which has led to much more team success. In any job that has 11 people trying to accomplish 1 common goal, the best way to accomplish that goal is to have all 11 people, not only working in unison, but believing that what they're doing individually is making a positive impact in accomplishing that goal. That's buying in.

It's nice in practice to hear "That's a good job Chad, K....Nice throw, K.......keep it up, and we'll be tough to beat this week, K." That will get players to appreciate you and love playing for you. But I don't think that unison was ever achieved amongst the whole team or amongst the units on the team. I don't think all the players had that belief that if I do my job and execute my simple task, then it will effectively help our offense succeed, whereas if I fail in executing I could bring the whole job to failure.

It's why Philbin is always going around saying that football is simple and if you can count to 4 you can play football. I think he's basically saying "Do your job. Execute your task, and everything else will come together"

Its really the difference between having a parent that wants to be your best friend and a parent that actually parents.
