It was a hypothetical, sunshine, don't put words in my mouth. I said if this woman had gone through this many times and you were witnessing it for the first time, your perception would be skewed. We only have your experience from which to judge, so to draw such a clear cut line in the sand is flawed. Again, if she had been hassled by this woman before I can understand her frustration. When a homeless person finds a mark, they keep going back to them looking for a handout, maybe this woman finally said "enough is enough". Extremely unfair characterization of what I said There are plenty of worker programs for people who are recovering addicts, who have mental or physical issues that would keep them out of mainstream employment, it's not out of the realm of possibility that this woman could find work with the right help. The first line of attack would be determining who her handlers are, if it's a family member then they should be charged with making sure she takes her meds and isn't wandering the streets unattended. Next would be evaluating whether she needs to be committed or if she can function in a normal way with just meds, if she can then you could consider putting her in a placement program, sometimes the mental health facility itself will offer a worker program.
Which would go back to my point about finding who the caretaker is and go from there. There are cases where the family takes "responsibility" for someone with special needs and they take the money and run. If that is the case with this women, she doesn't need a handout, she needs to have her situation straightened out. If she was in the shape that FinD described, she has no business wandering around IMO. That's my point, the money that she gets from handouts doesn't do anything to address the core problem, and one could argue that it doesn't solve her temporary situation either. If she was as bad as FinD described, then it shouldn't be her choice. NYC had a big problem with mentally ill people living on the streets years ago, at one point you couldn't go a week without reading about attacks on innocent walkers-by, some of which suffered injuries due to a brick to the head. There is a safety issue here that people are overlooking IMO, for the person wandering the streets as well as the people they come in contact with.
It's more or less about funding. Since most Florida Health Instituions are publically funded, many were forced to close their doors. Much of this is to blame on the Federal Govt. IMO, and no just Bush, but when your freaking brother is the POTUS for 8 years you'd think he'd have some pull. Many times the mentally challenged are locked up for no other reason than they are homeless and wandering the streets. Their crimes are often petty, like public drunkeness.
I grew up there (I feel like we've had this convo before) and moved to the East Coast about 4 years ago.
Thats all well and fine but if you or someone else, aren't willing to help her get her situation straightened out then giving her a little money for survival isn't hindering anything. You are preaching to the choir bro. We have people from mexico come here and beg. Some are scam artists, some are crazy, some are just homeless. You talk about reading about homeless people attacking people, which is wrong. Now often do you think someone reports about homeless people getting attacked? Let me help you, probably alot less as most people don't pay attention to the homeless, nor do they report it for fear of being institutionalized or just dealing with cops.
so if i have got this straight, you were angry because the old white lady judged the old black lady (who you also judged by assuming she was crazy). and then you also judged the white lady both as not being Christian and on the basis of her "southern drawl," without knowing anything about her except that she apparently doesn't like being harassed for money by strangers on the street. and this is somehow better?
Damn Fin D. I can't wait till you give the finger to a guy that cuts you off in traffic and you post that story here too.
Thanks, I would consider it a government failure and not necessarily that of one man. Something like public drunkeness is considered a crime, that's not really a petty thing IMO. Now if you were to tell me that they were given an extremely tough sentence due to their mental status, then I would agree with you on that one. I don't know of any case where a person has been locked up for being homeless, that isn't a crime. Maybe the police were giving them a night in a bed? I know that happens around here during the winter time, the cops will pick up a few people and drive them to a shelter or "lock them up" to get them out of the really rough cold nights. It depends, I see what you're saying, but I think if people just keep giving a person like that a handout that it's just passing the problem off to the next person that she comes in contact with. If she has mental health issues and is wandering around talking to "demons", then it becomes a law enforcement issue IMO. They could take her for a 24 hour evaluation (in some places 72 hours) and make a determination on where she belongs and find out who is responsible for her care. In this case I think a phone call to police would be more effective than a few bucks. Attacked by whom? Regardless with who it is, it should be reported. Anyone who is a victim of a crime and doesn't report the incident is to blame for no action being taken. If a homeless person reports a crime, the police are going to handle it the same way that they would any other. The police aren't going to haul someone away to prison or a mental institution unless they have just cause to do so, so the fear and/or paranoia of with dealing with the police isn't my concern. Being homeless isn't a crime, it's unfortunate, but that doesn't mean that they lose their rights to fair treatment under the law.
I find it hilarious that people don't seem to get what the original poster did here. You guys do realize that even the title is somewhat tongue in cheek right? That the sheer fact that he yelled at an old lady is, under most circumstances, considered an extreme faux pas and usually not to be lauded? The title itself is an attention grabber, as evidenced by the fact that a story about homeless people (essentially sub-humans) has drawn the interest and ire for at least six pages. And the fact that anyone feels that the yelling at said old person about religion was done in anything other than mocking anger is giggly**** worthy to me. I have said it once, and I will say it again, you are fighting about bums. Its not even an important topic like Transformers, Dolphins football or even what we all plan on eating for lunch today. Bums...
This was better than the time you were trying to decide whether or not to come out of the closet to all your buds here. Edit: Oh.....crap......that was a PM wasn't it? My bad.
They better not! Otherwise I know a guy who isn't afraid to knock over old ladies while screaming religious epiphats in their general direction. He will **** their **** up!
I find it hilarious you feel the mediocre first post was funny enough to post this.....................
Man, we almost got a little culture in this place, can't let that happen again. Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled programming... poop ghey suck ma cak stoopid mexican BOOM
I find it funny that you thought this post would be funny cuz he thought the first post was funny. Funny..
He's more like a geriatric Judge Dredd. You're like the Crocodile Hunter of bums. "Crikey that bloke just lit up a doobie and is talking to himself while using the Loo! Danger! Danger! Danger!"
We must be off our game during the offseason as well. It tooks us 6 pages to hijack this thread? Come fellow loungites..we can do better! Training camp opens in two days! We need to be in game shape!
OP (double entendre is intentional) says it depends on how much you pay them! And watch out for the Glazed Donuts!
I have a friend that knew a guy that was related to a disabled guy. You have offended me. Let's not take that picture and use it to attack Fin-D, it was posted in good fun.
You are right....sorry! CAPTION CONTEST Opfinistic: If only I had a Dolphin hat on, then I would look just like Fin-D! Where is my donut?
I think I'm going to go aggressively beg on lunch. And if some punk tells me to get a job or more Jesus, I'm gonna give him more legrest.
Much better. I just hope no assclowns PS my head from my avatar onto that pic. That would just be too wrong. crap. Prolly shoulda kept that to myself.
I was peaking at tipping the other day...okay fine so that wasn't funny...sue me. Wait, no, don't sue me.
I love that song, kinda catchy. I think about that thread every time I dine out now and it comes time to tally up the tip.
Sorry to spoil your fun guys but I'm closing this thread. It's been reported over and over to staff (and, believe me, it's not fun to us to have to clean this up) and we will decide who should receive possible points, infractions, PoFo bannings (yes, even though this thread was in the Lounge). I don't know why some of you chose to attack someone else's character but it's not going to continue on my watch. Thank you.
