Can you blame her though, really? Everyone is struggling right now financially, and if this woman was as out of it as you describe her, I wouldn't want to give her money either. I feel bad for folks that are on hard times and who genuinely are looking to better themselves, but a crazy lady wandering around a parking lot doesn't fit that IMO. :wink2:

No, she would have to have felt justified in her behavior to do that. The shame that was on her face, clearly showed that wasn't the case.

Don't give her money. Its your choice. Berating and belittling her was unnecessary.

But then again, I don't hate the poor....:shifty::lol:

Nope, especially seeing that I don't know the circumstances that led to her condition. We had a women in this area years ago that tried flushing her baby down a McDonalds toilet and used to take baths at the carwash, she did it to herself with drugs and I didn't feel bad for her. IMO she was the poster child for what not to do. :wink2:

Maybe the women was a regular begger? If you see someone who is always going from business to business looking for handouts, after a while it makes sense to say "hey, ever think about getting a job?". When I used to go to Syracuse for work I saw "homeless" people under the bridge begging for money and talking on their cell phones. Umm....cell phones?

Not getting my money, pricks :pointlol:

I suppose you worship at the "Church of The Giant White Dog With Sunglasses That's On Cheap T-Shirts That Are Sold At Every Tourist Trap In The Country"...or can we agree that avatars are just avatars?

Maybe it is illegal. But I fail to see how asking for change is more of an injustice than berating the a mentally challenged person. You don't, that's your prerogative.

It's a little different down here though L2G, at least in SoFla. These people aren't talking on cell phones or making a killing by pan-handling ala Homer Simpson.

Most of them have mental and psychologial issues. Personally, I don't like to give them money because most times I feel yes, they will probably buy booze. But I would never tell one to "Get a job". That's just hilarious and ignorant in it's own right.

So what if she was a regular beggar?

WA lady did not merely suggest AA lady get a job. She was belligerent with her, like she was talking to a kid who just broke a lamp. Again, which was my problem with the situation.

Besides, bet you dollars to donuts, neither you nor that WA lady, would give that AA lady a job.

Where is her family? And why hasn't she been institutionalized if she's alone and can't take care of herself? The fact that she's walking around like that would lead me to believe that it's less of a natural biological problem as it is a self-inflicted issue. If she is truly mentally ill, then she doesn't need money, she needs to be committed and held in a facility where she won't harm herself or continue to wander the streets. :wink2:

I won't support someone who doesn't even try to find a job, not unless I could claim them as a dependent on my income tax.

If you witnessed a situation that this WA lady has been through many times, your perception is skewed. I wouldn't blame WA lady one bit if this same AA woman has been wandering around looking for handouts for a while now, especially in this economy where everyone needs to tighten their belts.

Of course I wouldn't and neither would you

Well, to be fair, there is a "home" down the street from where she was. This "home" is for the mentally challenged that can live without constant assistance. Not necessarily employable. Maybe she was from there, maybe not. Either way, your stance would make sense if the system and life were perfect.

    Ok, sorry for any misunderstanding.

However, I don't think that you've arrived at a logical conclusion. IMHO, the homeless should receive meaningful help, not simple handouts.

Not all parts of Florida have involuntary mental health systems. (Thank You Jeb Bush). In Ft. Myers, if you are considered mentally challeneged and committ a crime, they throw you in jail. It's sad.

So you know this AA lady didn't try to find a job, how again?

Then don't give the money. Why be angry and mean about it?

Don't be so sure. I do have a rep as a bleeding heart after all.

However, please tell me you recognize, how you not knowing a thing about her, wouldn't give her a job, then expect her to find work, facing that same problem. You feel the homeless are beneath you, which is fine. I'd ask you how you sleep at night, but I'm sure you do on a gilded bed with a mattress stuffed with live baby seals, which I hear is a perk of being a conservative..

True. I agree. Handouts don't do much. But again, I only brought this up and did what I did, because the AA lady didn't deserve that verbal berating she was given.

I've often thought it would be nice to have a charity where there were showers and grooming with business attire and a place to sleep, that taught some business skills. I know there are some, but they're underfunded and undermanned.

Then I would question the purpose of those homes. I think having a home for "crazies" to slum is a bit like tossing them to the side when they need real care. There are alot of cases where family members take the state aid that a mentally ill family member receives and they toss the family member aside.

Not really, life doesn't need to be perfect in order for mentally unstable people to be taken off the streets. I would think that more people would be up in arms over the safety concerns that this causes rather than just toss a few bucks to these folks.

After a quick search, the only thing I see on Jeb is the fact that he was considering a veto on roughly 3 mil for walk-in centers that don't really solve the core problem (I don't see the issue there), and also reducing the type of meds that mentally ill folks would get, basically restricting them to the lower end generic brands. Could you give me some more info, being from NY I don't know much about the situation.

Depending on the crime, I see no problem locking up someone who is mentally challenged. Again that would go back to the family/caretakers.

I feel it is appropriate to tell this story now, since we are talking about bums.

I was driving through Phoenix a few years back and was, for some reason, captivated by this hobo (he was black, since we are supposed to provide descriptive details about hobos). So I had my buddy pull over and we decided to watch him for five minutes.

Neither one of us could really put our finger on why this guy was so enthralling, but we agreed, that we NEEDED to watch him.

And just when we were starting to doubt our intuition, the (black) hobo, stopped in the middle of the street, pulled down his (blue) jeans and dropped a duece right in the middle of the road. It was, until this post, the greatest moment of my life.

Also, I was in San Francisco (always a great place for bums) with my girlfriend at the time. This homeless guy was eyeballing us from a 1/4 mile away comes up to us. I instruct my girl not to talk to him cuz he might have the mouth AIDS or something to that effect. He asks for 15 cents. She decides, cuz she is better than the rest of us, to give him a quarter.

The bum proceeds to tell us to hold on as he searches for change on the quarter. He comes back with 45 cents and tells us to have a good day. This, and only this, is how I made my first million...scamming bums.

Maybe they abandoned her? maybe they are all dead? maybe she took off and they couldn't find her?? Parents sell of their kids you don't think its slightly possible the family could just not want to deal with it?

Maybe she has been off and on. Again you assume the worst automatically.

Well you assume that people care enough to try to put her in, not to mention she may not want to be in a mental institution. Its very difficult articulating to a person who is out of it, much less convincing one they need to be in a mental institution. Alot of people on the streets have mental deficincies. Are some self inflicted sure. But to automatically just assume all cases are such, is to one believe the system is perfect, and two basically just want to see what one wants to see.
