OK.... we all think about it... we all pretend to be GM's of our own living room.... so how could the draft have played out in hindsight?? This is by no means a negative post or an insult to anyone or our organization as I absolutely commend the job they do and am very satisfied with our 09 draft. I also understand that it's not wise to judge any of our selections or draft strategy after only 3 games into season.... but it doesn't prevent our minds from thinking about alternatives as the season progresses. LOL. Just spitballing, but here are mine: 1. CB Vontae Davis- (although Hakeem Nicks and Kenny Britt were a close 2nd) 2. LB Connor Barwin (Sintim is right there, but I still prefer Barwin) 2. CB Sean Smith (not even an after thought! LOL) 3. WR Mike Wallace- speed kills!! (well worth trading 6th and 7th to move up 5 spots) 4. TE Shawn Nelson- playmaking TE we're sorely missing right now. 5. S Chris Clemons 5. QB Tom Brandstater 7. WR/PR-KR Quan Cosby (Captain Munnerlyn 2nd) Anyone have different preferences?
I specifically mentioned that in my opening, if you read it Venge. LOL. So you're telling me you have NOT ONCE thought about how the draft could have gone based on our current issues/weakness at this very moment.
Not yet, and not really ... you'll drive yourself crazy if you start playing the hindsight game ... You just have no way of telling how a season is going to play out when you go through the draft. If you did, then we'd be Super Bowl champs every year.
For me personally.... when Barwin wasn't called at #44, I think a swift from David Beckham would've been more pleasant! Although.... there are only 2 players we could've drafted who could have made me feel less depressed about not getting Connor, and those 2 are Sintim and Pat White. Pat's one of my favorite college players of the past few years, so guess that's my silver lining. I love seeing him in a Phins uni.
This is just a week by week hindsight game. LOL. By week 16 it could be back to exactly who we presently have. I'm only looking at things right now regarding what our needs seem to be and if we've addressed those needs through the draft. I don't question the players, but I am curious about the strategy b/c there are 3-5 picks that don't seem to address our deficiencies at this time IMO. For instance, 1. We all know that we sorely need a pass catching TE threat. Last year was deep in talented playmaking TEs.... 2010 doesn't seem to be so much, yet we draft 2 TE's who were clearly not playmakers- hence we'll probably be drafting TE again in 2010 to address it. 2. We badly need an explosive, offensive playmaker <from our base offense> besides Ronnie. We knew that last season. The draft had plenty of WRs to suit this need. We draft 2 WRs, but neither are explosive playmakers or game changers.... hence we'll still be left needing an offensive weapon come next draft. 3. I love Pat in Miami but, like many, I feel we should address our existing needs and work on improving our base offense before adding in more wrinkles. That's all. LOL.
I would like Andrew Quarless, TE, around rd 4 in the 2010 draft. Martellus Bennett was the recent TE whom I really wanted, but that was 2008, not 2009. Travis Beckum was the guy I wanted in 2009. PS: We don't know that neither of the WRs we drafted are playmakers or game changers.
I think Martellius Bennett is mentally handicapped. I don't mean to be rude but every time i watch the guy, he's doing something wrong. He's a great talent but mentally, I think he's elsewhere. Btw, I would like Quarless too.
True.... but not knowing by now isn't the greatest sign. LOL. Not saying that they can't be great players, but I don't see them in the explosive Nicks, Maclin, Harvin, Wallace, Bey, Crabtree, Knox, Louis Murphy, Mike Thomas, Deon Butler type mold. This was a pretty deep WR draft to not have to use use it on more possession guys.... unless our strategy is to lull the defense to sleep. Stitch... actually, I think I was torn between Wallace and Beckum in the 3rd. Both were high on my wish list.
