As I continue to inch my way through Elder Scrools: Oblivion, I was reminded yesterday of a topic I've been meaning to bring up about adventure games in general ... how often do you fall back on walkthroughs? Feel free to discuss your answer? I ask because Oblivion (and the whole Elder Scrolls series, for that matter) has an amazingly thorough -- even exhaustive -- Wiki site, and I'm having trouble fighting the temptation of hitting the site way before I should. EDIT: It's too early ... "through" should be "throw."
Very rarely. But just yesterday I was playing Adventures of LOLO that I got from the Wii virtual console. I had to breakdown and use a walkthrough on that game once. And I'm sure I might need it again. That game is hard! No wonder I never got far with it as a kid.
I chose never (because I never do), but I don't think it's for cheating pansies. Some developers (Square is NOTORIOUS FOR THIS) have their best stuff so deep and hidden it's imposible to get it without being told how. And that's bad design imo. A game should always be self-sustaining.
I can think of two times that i used one. First was for MGS to beat Psycho Mantis. The other was for Braid trying to find the stars.
That's a good point. Final Fantasy games are a perfect example. If you want to find EVERYTHING you have to use a walkthrough. And if you use a walkthrough for Final Fantasy games, it's pretty pointless and eliminates any challenge from the game. I always tell myself I'll beat the game and then go back and use walkthroughs for the stuff I missed, but by that point, I've lost interest.
come to think of it, its been a while for me. maybe games are just getting easier? but i've used them in the past for sure...especially for finding secret crap.
Games are definitely getting easier. Realized this after a weekend of playing old NES and Genesis games on the Wii virtual console.
It depends somewhat on game type. For a shooter or action type game I generally only use it if im really stuck on something and about to throw my console out the window lol. But for RPG type stuff, I generally use guides and walkthroughs fairly often, though more to find easter egg type stuff than as a specific walkthrough to beat the game.
last time i used one was Knights of the Old Republic on the Xbox. oh and just about every zelda ive ever played. Damn temples. Specifically in OoT, that damned water temple.
I have used them a couple times but generally only after beating the game and wanting to go back and get all the achievements.
Yep...no use wasting weeks or even months trying to figure out what to do. I remember having to call the Nintendo Hotline for Zelda and Castlevania 2 back in the days before guides.
I always try to get as far as I can before using one then only use it to get past where I'm stuck. I often need them as I get lost in my own back yard... Anyone remember the days of the clue book. These were small hints and more books before the release of giant strat guides and that new fangled internet thingy. SSI gold box, Ultima's etc. Yes I'm older than dirt.
I get frustrated when I think something is just a time sink IE I need some key thats in a random box thats 4 floors down in some massive dungeon...I cant take it after a half hour or so of wandering....then I used them to hunt easter eggs after Ive finished with little or no help.. because I like to feel ive done 100% of the game.
