**EDIT** Pennphin, helped me out with the question: Why is it rthe video looks different on say a soap opera then movie? Is it different lighting, cameras, resolution? You know how you can tell the difference between home video and movie quality cause it looks different...is that just a resolution difference, lighting, both, more?
both and more. not only is the lighting and resolution better on pro video but if you have video editing software you can make it look really nice. it's mostly in the cameras though. it's not that they're not available to the common person it's just that they're a hell of a lot more expensive than the lesser quality yet way more affordable video cameras that everyone at home gets.
There's a certain quality that makes it less "live" looking with pro stuff. And the high end digital stuff has the same quality with actual film. Do you know what I mean? Do I know what I mean?
i know what he means... it's like how you can always tell the difference between a soap opera and a sitcom.. besides the terrible acting i dont know though.. i've made me some amateur pr0n that looks pretty pro qual---- err---- scratch that
That's exactly what I mean. Thank you for helping me out there. Is it really just the lighting that makes "film quality" different in those examples?
yea I'm really not sure. the extent of my expertise with filming anything was a station in a comm tech class i had to take freshman year of high school. ..and all i remember from that is dressing up in some ridiculous leprechaun outfit and filming a lucky charms commercial.
Lighting... Different types of cameras... Experience!!! For example, look at Friends in it's first season... The quality is rather mediocre, the lighting isn't that great... Then look at it in it's tenth season... Great lighting and you know they're using top notch cameras. The reason Soaps look better are because most of them have had a lot of time to invest in quality equipment, something that upcoming sitcoms do not have.
There are professional cameras that make a difference. Lighting can make the world of difference, don't get me wrong... You can't color correct bad lighting, no matter what some people think. From my experience, one small thing can set something off and make it look awful. When we do our first Stripped Down shoot, we adjusted our cameras to the white background (before we went to live performances) and turned the lights on... We forgot to re-adjust to the lighted background... So it didn't bad but you could tell if you really looked at it. Our first shoot: [ame="http://vimeo.com/4598607?pg=embed&sec="]Stripped Down - The Blend on Vimeo[/ame] A later shoot: [ame="http://vimeo.com/3626754?pg=embed&sec="]Stripped Down - Justin Kirk on Vimeo[/ame] I am sure you can tell the different, but this shows you that one simple setting can make the world of difference.
....So I tried to click my username with my mouse's scroller... and I missed my user name and hit the Mark Best Answer... Talk about a self-gratifying fail....
i think between you and the rest of the answers we covered it pretty well i wish to subscribe to your video feed.
I wish... Nah it's just a side project for fun. That's done though, the producer graduated and no one wants to steal his project from him because he came up with the idea himself. And friend and I are working on another project called the Playlist though. It's basically just a music video television show that will be aired on campus. We've gotten videos from Roadrunner, Victory, and Metalblade Records and we're in contact with about five more labels. I'm pretty excited to see where that goes...
