Not often you see highlight videos on youtube of offense linemen.

He is so good at pulling.

If they do plan to use more shotgun running like has been brought up as a possibility, then Lamar Miller looks well suited for it. I know it's been brought up by other posters, but man some of his better runs were from the gun. He just looks more comfortable running from that formation.

maybe this highlight film will remind people why it's worth putting up with some of Pouncey's antics. can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to want to trade this guy.

Pouncey has unique abilities that could be valuable on the football field.

However I don't think a highlight film is going to show you his overall worth because he does actually get physically pushed around a fair amount.

That's why ultimately you look at his PFF grade, which functions as sort of a play+play+play cumulative counter of good plays versus bad, and he's only at a +7.1. There were 12 centers who did better than that in 2013.

Probably 10 of the 16 plays you see on that highlight video are unique to Mike Pouncey and his abilities, but the season is 1000 snaps not 10.

This is why I questioned taking a center at 15 overall. Even if you're right, and I always admitted he was the best center and a better center prospect than his brother Maurkice, how much impact does his unique ability really have? How many plays do you execute on a per game basis where Pouncey's marginal ability over some other guy are going to make the difference on the play?

I like the player and I believe his unique abilities could actually be an integral part in the effort of developing the kind of unique ground scheme we saw in Philadelaphia, IF that is indeed what Bill Lazor intends (mixed indications on that, as of yet).

But he's not a slam dunk player at the position to where you could overlook his buffoonery when it comes time to choose whether to pay him a boatload of money.

It's strange to see people who know so much about much about the game be so clueless about the whole point of watching it. Entertainment. It's only entertainment folks. Wanna berate someone for character flaws? Watch CSPAN.

The salary cap is probably the most imperatively functional aspect of the game. How much of that salary cap Mike Pouncey takes up should be heavily dependent on the risk factors he presents.

    What exactly is the risk?

Is he in the substance abuse program?

No clue. He has been linked to drug activity, so its reasonable to believe he may be in the NFL substance abuse program.

He has also testified in front of a grand jury in connection to gun running. He has also been ordered by the league to undergo a psychiatric evaluation in connection to his harassment of a former teammate. He also appears to be very close friends with a gang member who is being charged with multiple murders.

So the big risks here are suspension from the league, physical harm to himself, and/or incarceration.

Chances of two of the big ricks are pretty small and it is also reasonable to believe he is not in the NFL substance abuse program. One NFL player who dealt drugs to other NFL players wasn't in the NFL substance abuse program.

Is he any bigger risk than any football player who comes from a poor background and a dangerous neighborhood?

I do think he needs to hire a PR person. I don't know why more NFL players don't.

This is a really ironic post because I'm easily just as confused how you can recognize the nature of the game and label it so clearly, and then be confused about why gossip about a player's involvement with illegal activities, bullying, etc can end up being such a big deal. You literally JUST stated it. Entertainment. The league is entertainment-based. Hell there's an entire TV network called "Entertainment" whose sole purpose (just about) is gossiping about celebrities, which means people care about what these entertainers do. And why shouldn't they? If they didn't care in the first place these entertainers (including football players) would be out of a job.

The NFL has been built on celebrity. Anyone who thinks the NFL is just a collection of football games is denying reality. The league wants us to get all gooey when Drew Brees carries his cute kid on the field after the Super Bowl but doesn't want us to care when Mike Pouncey wears hats in support of a guy that is probably a multiple murderer? One goes with the other. As you say, that's just the reality of it.

    Three things..

1)He's an athletic fast lineman that can quickly get to the 2nd level and center his opponent.

    2) he really needs to pay more attention to his lower half and continue to build and strengthen.

    3) when he was coming out of college I pointed out the habit that he has by looking thru his legs at the Qb the beat before he snaps the football in shotgun formation, it's a huge tell for the defense to get off the ball and he does it on every snap

I've felt this way for a while, but I think Mike Pouncey's "best" use would be as a pulling guard. In a predominantly zone blocking scheme he's in the right spot, but there's a smaller percentage of players who can do what he can pulling.

I've always felt that the only way Pouncey would move to guard was if they brought in Maurkice to play center. It's much more likely for Miami to sign a big ticket FA than Pittsburgh would. But would it be worth the risk of having 2 Pouncey's?

I'm not gonna pick another fight on this subject. I promise. However, I don't think linking Pouncey to the NFL substance abuse program because he allegedly smokes weed is reasonable at all. I know someone who smokes weed pretty regularly (cough-cough), and my 'friend' has never been in trouble for drugs in any way, and has cleanly passed drug tests. In fact, he's a decent human being most of the time. :)

I don't think smoking pot says much negative about someone's character.

But the reality is that there are transcripts of teammates referring to drug use at Pouncey's house. To the degree that Richie Incognito said going there was bad news. That pretty much puts Pouncey in the league's cross-hairs.

I didn't mean it that way. It's all good.

I kinda figured you were referring to the Incognito tweet. It's just that the league cannot legally enter anyone in the substance abuse program simply on the basis of a tweet, so it's important to remember that. I simply don't think it's fair to assume anything without the facts. After all, Pouncey is still a human being... and, one who is reminded every day, through the media and by fans, of every little mistake that he has made. I'm not sure how I'd feel about that if I were in the same situation.

I'll just leave it at that.

yeah, it does. If something is illegal, and you willfully choose to serve your personal reckless desire (hazardous to yourself and possibly others), then it is a sign of poor personal character.

    It is not illegal everywhere.

Further, I said it doesn't say "much". It says about as much as a speeding ticket IMO.

really? same as a speeding ticket? really?

Yeah, a speeding ticket for driving 55 in a 25mph school zone at the end of school day.

If you really pushed me, I'd say that speeding actually puts people in more danger than smoking pot. Where I live possession of small amounts is actually a much lesser fine than speeding is.

What danger is the public subjected to from someone smoking pot?

Actually, speeding would be much worse, IMO. One could make a very legitimate argument that speeding actually endangers other drivers. Smoking weed endangers no one.

I work with people that have debilitating peripheral vascular disease usually caused by smoking Cigarettes. Smoking marijuana has a significantly higher risk for peripheral vascular disease (people losing fingers, toes, feet, below knee amputations, cardiac disease (heart attack, cardiomyopathy comlications) carotid disease, and cognitive trouble.

I'd like to read the study that shows clear evidence of a direct link between a higher risk of debilitating peripheral vascular disease and smoking marijuana, if you have a link.

This endagers the person doing the actual smoking and no one else. Consumption of too much sugar will probably lead to a much longer list of diseases

Getting caught smoking it, can get you suspended, for possibly a year. It says a lot about your character. That said many NFL players still smoke it.

If you're already at the 2nd or 3rd stage. Getting caught once pretty much amounts to nothing if you're smart enough to leave it alone after that.

Nope, that whizzing sound is the point going over YOUR head.

I was tying it back to the point of the thread, you know, Pouncey, the NFL, risk to the Dolphins, being a Dolphins forum and not the Health section and all. The risk is, his arse could go Josh Gordon on us.
