I really disagree with a lot of those bands being better. Springsteen, Flaming Lips, Franz Ferdinand? No way. Whoever the singer is for Rush completely destroys their music. I just don't like their style either way, seems kind of.. I duno goofy.
Of course you're not going to agree with all the bands on my list. That wasn't the point. The point was to state that there are a ton of excellent bands out there. Especially bands better than the 2008 version of RHCP!
And that is your opinion...just as I think that the Chili Peppers are the most overrated, overhyped, stagnant band I've ever heard. One more song about California and they tie Bruce Springsteen's record for most songs about their hometown that no one gives a rat's *** about. Most musicians will completely disagree with you about Rush, as would the fans who've continued to allow them to play arenas nearly 40 years later. You said name bands that are better. I named you a bunch, and each one I named is having MORE success than the Peppers are right now. Rush is goofy? True...I guess in comparison the video for "Give it Away", coupled with appearing onstage wearing nothing but socks over their junk is the epitome of highbrow entertainment.
Dax was amazing in Acid Bath! I haven't heard the new stuff although I will be doing so now that you reminded me.
I don't know why you would care about the success a band is having when evaluating them. Looking at records sold or how many people like a band is a pop way to look at music. Rush's musical style is very goofy. How can you say it isn't? It's all over the place and if you didn't know any better you would assume the lead singer is a woman. I would take Flea and Frusciante over any of those 5 bands you listed before and Getty Lee anyday also. The record for most songs about their hometown that nobody cares about would easily go to Bon Jovi btw.
Rush's earlier stuff was awesome. Permanent Waves is one of my favorite albums of all time. The last track Natural Science still gives me chills.
Simply put, that "crap" music gets my junk rubbed on by latinas in short skirts in the clubs...so bring on the "crap!" Can't stand Pitbull...but dude his music gets girls to dance up on your junk.
There's something to be said for this point of view! Just as valid as getting a hard-on for Neil Peart's paradiddles!
Dax's new stuff is very un-Acid Bath. Check out his myspace. There are songs posted to give you an idea of where he's at musically.
Oh I don't know...maybe because I'm a musician, and putting food in the belly kind of is in direct proportion to having success? Just a thought. Also, while fleeting success is in no way a means of evaluating a band, continued success for 10, 20, 30 years IS. Crap bands just do not last. I don't know...why don't you ask probably every musician you know? None would call them "goofy". Bro...no offense, but to call Rush's musical style goofy only shows that one, you haven't listened to Rush in a LONG time, and two, you have absolutely no idea of what playing talented music is. (again, no offense) Rush's later albums have become more structured and less complicated than their earlier stuff, and their earlier stuff was in no way "all over the place". Some of the tightest songwriting and musicianship you'll ever hear, and no...that's not opinion. That's cold hard fact. And you can have Flea & Frusciante. I don't hear them playing anything...and I mean anything, that makes me want to pick up my instrument and figure it out. Flea's bass line in "Give it Away" is the only thing that caught my ear. Take Dream Theater. John Myung plays rings around Flea. And by the way, it's Geddy not Getty. The point is that you said name better bands. Again...in my opinion I named a bunch of 'em. Just saw this next quote from you... Bro, again...you need to broaden your horizons. I'll give you a LAUNDRY list of better players than both of them. Look up Shawn Lane or Michael Romeo on guitar and Stu Hamm on bass just to start. While I loathe defending JBJ, he really doesn't write about his hometown.
lol I duno how your gonna bag on my opinion of music and tell me to broaden my horizons and then tell me that Flea's best bass line is the most generic, and basic thing he's ever done (give it away). That shows me that you really haven't heard a lot of their stuff either so I don't know how you can rip them for being stagnant etc. I would try listening to Mother's Milk or a lot of the less popular songs off BloodSugarSexMajic if you wana hear some nasty bass lines. Maybe funk just isn't your thing I duno. Just because a band is around for a long time does not make them a great band IMO. Longevity doesnt necessarily equal talent. Millions of people listen to mindless or talentless music all around the world. You can tell me all day that I have no idea of what good music is or what playing talent is. But the reality is that you can have all the talent and song writing ability in the world and still make lousy music. Thats my opinion of Rush. Really good bass player who's stuck in a crappy band. I just cannot stand their style and I honestly don't know one song of theirs that I can listen to and enjoy. I can appreciate a nice bass line in a lot of their songs or a good drum beat, but aside from that it's just ruined for me by the rest of what their songs incorporate. I think we just have very different tastes in Rock music. I really dislike most things considered Metal and really find a lot of the scene annoying (no offense bc I know thats your scene and I respect that). Rush is something I will never enjoy, despite my love of the majority of "classic" Rock (obviously with my avatar).
Exactly...which is why you should be prepared when you ask a ridiculous question or make a ridiculous comment about music for it to be answered by one just as ridiculous.
Wait why are we forcing Slick to enjoy Rush now? I'm not a huge Rush fan, but I think they are/were better than 90% of music thats put out today. People just have different musical taste. Like personally I think Vocals and Lyrics are more important than ''Difficult" guitar solos and stuff like that. Thats not to say I appreciate terrible players, but a lot of people seem to mistake the word 'difficult' to mean 'good'.
Exactly. Difficult does not equal good. In fact, I find it even more annoying that a musician can be incredibly talented and make lousy music. Here's an analogy of that last sentence for Pagan: It's like Eva Mendez choosing to wear a winter parka at the beach.
No one is forcing anyone to like anything. But to call them "crappy" or "goofy" is assinine. You make a comment like that, either be able to deal with the rebuttals or keep the comment to yourself, knowhuttamean? Again, lousy is in the ears of the beholder. Dude, you throw out your opinions like that, they'll be countered. Deal with it. You said you don't like metal. Therefore, you're not qualified to judge whether or not it's "lousy". Here's an analogy for YOU. You don't look to the cast of "The View" to critique Arnold Schwarzeneggar movies. They don't like them, so you go to someone who does for the proper review. And to go back to your quote: Then DON'T say something like it's be hard to find better players than Flea! You said that, I mentioned some that are. Now you switch it back to songwriting. Songwriting doesn't mean jack when it comes to actual playing. The Beatles wrote amazing songs, yet none of them are considered the best at their instrument. You might have said Rush were "all over the place" before, but your argument is quickly getting there by the way you keep contradicting yourself, bro.
lol I have no problem dealing with it. My feelings aren't hurt that you don't like the Chili Peppers and think Rush is amazing Let's look at our avatars and ask, "Do you really think these two people have a very similiar taste in music?' Although I don't think anyone can really debate against Jimi very much.
All I'm saying is that he can think Rush sucks, you can love Rush, and I can think they're okay and we can all still be friends
I'm not conradicting myself. My original statements had to do with the best rock bands from my generation that are still good. You threw Rush in there. Obviously Rush isn't from the same generation.
Of course not, Jimi was metal. And I tell you something. I gurantee you that my iPod has more diversity than you think. Well DUH! The only thing I have a problem with is the use of the term "sucks". Say you don't like them. That shows opinion. To say they suck is equaling you to the Jet fans who used to yell that Marino sucked. They don't "suck". You just don't like 'em. Now Creed....we can ALL agree that THEY sucked.
Read the quote from me that you answered. Had nothing to do with Rush. You asked for better players than Flea and Frusciante, I gave them to you. Now all of a sudden it has nothing to do with the playing and everything to do with the songwriting. That's what I was referring to.
To give you a short example of different ****... I go from Iron Maiden to Tom Jones to Beethoven to Styx to BB King to Jaco Pastorious to Billy Joel to Elton John to the Soundtrack from "Evil Dead" The Musical". No...but I DO have this.
There ya go. From that era. I was never saying Flea or Frusciante are the best of all time. How the **** would I say that Frusciante is the greatest when I have Jimi Hendrix in my avatar? lol
There ya go what? You asked, I answered...with players from that era. Then you said that songwriting mattered more. I don't get where you're going with this.
Rush has been around since what like the early 70's maybe even late 60's? I was talking about bands from my era or generation which would be from the 80's on.
I know....again, I didn't say Rush in answer to that statement. Go back and read. I said Shawn Lane, Stu Hamm and Michael Romeo.
I think Rush and the RHCP debate got blended together. Doesn't really matter though, we both have different tastes in music and def Bass players. Excluding Rush, what "classic" rock do you listen to?
I gotta give one of these to ya dood. Because someone has to keep the legitimacy of music alive and well. (classic rock in general.. chili peppers included.. because it seems that most popular stuff now-a-days isn't like popular stuff back in the early 90s. why do you think that **** is still all over the radio?) The bands you listed are no doubt classic metal bands.. What I'm interested in is the diversity of your iPod. What's the stuff that's not metal? And to you saying Hendrix is metal. So is zeppelin. I don't really do metal but I'll list a few: Ani Difranco, Battles, King Crimson, Kellar Williams, Dave Matthews, Beethoven, Jaga Jazzist, Grails... Keb Mo, Beatles...
I have classical, celtic, new age, blues and fusion to name a few. Mahavishnu Orchestra to Loreena McKennit.
The Mars Volta? All hype? I'm not a trained musician but I have all their albums. Love their work. Your thoughts?
mars volta are alright. a few of them were from a band called 'at the drive in'. if you like mars volta you should check out "LITE" and "Ghosts and Vodka". Also, "grails", "battles", "godspeed you black emperor!"
