In the months immediately following the earthquake that ravaged Haiti back in 2010, Pastor Josephus Livenson Lauvanus, the president of the Lutheran Church of Haiti, was leading a tour through the ruins and rubble that marked his country. In the midst of the emotional turmoil of again wading through the devastation and reminders of death which scarred the island nation he turned and proclaimed to the assembled, worldwide Church leaders, “We will not be defined by rubble, but by restoration, for we are a people of the resurrection.” This year as Christians experience Lent and Holy Week without traditional, corporate worship, I have a new appreciation for Pastor Lauvanus' words. We will not be marked by empty pews, we will not be measured by fear, anxiety, or even physical death for we Christians are a people of the resurrection! Christ is Risen, He is Risen indeed, alleluia.
"We are an Easter people, and Alleluia is our chorus." Pope St. John Paul II Happy Easter everyone! Jesus Christ is risen. He is risen, indeed.
