Why doesn't Goodell discuss how valuable a rookie can be to a team's marketing? Just another attempt by the owners to lower player's salaries.
Out of all the contracts he referred to ours. Why not go after "hot-lanta"? They said yes to whatever Ryan's agent proposted to them.
Good I hope they fix it. Not even the marketing bump makes up for the amount of money rookies make. It hurts the lower teams and it will allow more money to go to the veterans.
people thought that with the NHL too, and it happened, and its working. I say bring on a rookie salary cap!
Yeah it's tough flying on corporate jets to stadiums all over the USA and eating prime rib and champagne while kissing Jerry Jones' azz. Sign me up for that grind. These guys don't know the meaning of "work."
For that matter, why not target the ludicrous salaries that have been paid the past five years or so? I mean we're not the only team that dished out heaps of cash on their pick.
Disagree here. Goodell is not trying to lower salaries... the league already has a salary cap, and by "limiting" rookie salaries, it gives a bigger piece of the pie to established players, who are often cut to make room for the HUGE rookie salary.
I agree rookie pay is excessive, I believe I heard on ESPN that either JaMarcus Russell or Matt Ryan had a contract that paid more than Tom Brady...crazy.
I'm not so sure about this. He is not proposing taking away salary, but just redistributing it to the more deserving players ; the Vets.
You're kidding right???? There are more people in the world who can play left tackle vs. those that can run a billion dollar corporation and not into the ground. You don't know the meaning of work, or else you would know what these execs do.
Oh c'mon bro, these Corporate Execs "work" maybe 2 hours a week. Most of their time is spent on the golf course, at "lunches" that last 3 hours, or traveling between corporate HQ's, meanwhile their secretaries & administrative assts make them look good.
I am with JDang307 on this subject... A lot of people just like to say the big wigs do nothing but I know first hand how hard their work is. My Father is a Regional Director of a big company (that I work for as well) and you wouldnt believe the amount of ignorant comments people make like "Your dad's job is easy." Comments like that upset me because I see him leave for work everyday at 7 am and arrive home at 7:30 PM each night every weekday. Then he works a half day on Saturday... Bottom line: JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T SEE PEOPLE WORK DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE NOT WORKING.
He's still middle mgmt. They do work. Its the REALLY big wigs we are talking about. The sons of the owner, the cousin of the Chairman, those types.
Other leagues have successfull rookie caps or payscales, no reason the NFL should not have the same, especially if the "saved" money is going into veteran salaries. As long as the money isnt just going back into the pockets of owners its a fantastic idea and one needed for years now. These salaries are absolutely crushing and missing a few prospects can really monetarily tie up your franchise for years.
I've been around enough of them to be "in the know". I used to be part of the U of Miami Alumni Assn board, and we had our share of Corporate Time Stealing Weasels aka "Senior Corporate Execs" on the board. Trust me, these guys used every excuse in the world to get out of their jobs and get into alumni meetings.
Like everybody else there is a mix. You have some company big wigs who are the hardest workers and some that don't work. Applying stereotypes to everyone is the surest way to guarantee that you'll be proven wrong.
Back on topic. It's about time these salaries get under control. No way a first round pick should get paid more then someone who has been doing it for years. I think give them a 3 year max contract. If they stay in the league (Ryan Leaf) then they can get a better contract.
