Travis always has a nice detailed write-up. Will be looking forward to all of his previews as well as reviews this season.

I like Travis very much--great writer--passionate, concise, and grounded.

But this piece is far too optimistic. Gase should be on notice after that s... show. Horrible. This is a bad football team.

Travis is certainly glass half full in regards to players/coaches he likes. But that’s not always a bad thing, especially after simply a preseason game.

If we are 1-4 and him or anyone else are making excuses for this team? They can FO!!!

Gase should be on notice after a glorified scrimmage? Enough already.

I've mentioned that to Travis in the past as well- he can be a little too positive at times and not completely objective. I thought this piece was really well written though and showed both sides of the coin. I won't get to see the game until tomorrow morning so I don't know if I'll agree with him or not, but he's definitely getting a lot better in a relatively short period of time.

Question- did Travis give up on this site? I see DJ promoting his stuff a lot and haven't seen Travis in ages. Hopefully one of the many Fins gigs he has going is paid so he can start building the career that he wants.

You're not the only one voicing this opinion, but I'm using yours to respond to...

Everyone seems to forget what preseason is REALLY all about. Travis summed it up with this one statement.

We could have been like Tampa Bay, leaving starters in to play longer than we did however, the purpose of preseason is to evaluate talent...evaluate other players and see who cuts the mustard to play in the NFL. If the old NFL rules were still in place regarding roster cuts, we would be seeing quite a few players already being cut from the team but now since teams carry 90 players until the last game of the preseason, we're going to hear naysayer after naysayer all throughout preseason.

Along with 3YPC, I listen to Travis's podcast all the time. I agree, he might be a tad too optimistic, but I am too, so I like it. However, unlike me, he does really try to research things and back stuff up with film study, stats, etc. instead of going by just what he thinks he sees. The arrow is definitely pointing up for Travis (and Simon, CK, and Alf)! Now, if they will just remember the little people, like me, when they are big and famous.

We will know in a few months.

I’m thinking we will have a top half offense and bottom half defense as it stands. But that could easily reverse.

    Here's some trivia:

Since the 1970 merger, the only Dolphins HC's that coached at least one full season that never had the Dolphin's offense or defense ranked in the top half by points in any season they coached are: Cam Cameron and Adam Gase. And Gase is the only HC in Dolphins history that ever did that two years in a row.

Just saying that having at least one unit ranked in the top half has historically been a low threshold to cross for the Dolphins. Since 1970 we've done that 41 out of 48 years, or 85% of the time (note that in 1976 where we were ranked 15th in both there were only 28 teams so that counts too). And 2 of those 7 years were when we fired the HC mid-season:

If Brock Lobster makes the opening day roster, I think I'm off the Gasetrain.

I think I'm off already. Hes going to have to make this team waaaaayyyyy different for me to come back to support him. What I saw Thursday night was the same piss poor energy, sluggish, complacent performance that was there last year through 10 defeats. For me its playoffs or goodbye for Gase, and I dont care what excuse he brings.

Right now, I am in the don't churn the HC camp. I have reservations about Burke, and if Gase replaces him, then I would probably be okay with it. However, I think in todays NFL, head coaches need more time.

Alright then... make sure you stay off if we make the playoffs though.

It's really easy to be pessimistic and then just turn around and use the old "I'm glad I was wrong, I'll eat some crow now" BS phrase.

There are a lot of fans that remind me of the two old men in the Muppets show that we watched as kids- they're just always bitter and expecting the worst. And that's fine, to each his own. I've just never related to liking something and constantly hating on it at the same time.

The reason I quoted you is because those types of fans will never say, "I was wrong..." They're going to be the first to say, "I told you so...they just needed to do what I've been saying all these years." That's the part that makes me so angry- be a man and admit when you're wrong. That's tied to intelligence though and a completely different conversation.

No. I've been a fan since before Gase was born. being the HC involves getting criticized when things go poorly. Thursday night was a s..t show. Gase admitted it. If this team doesnt get its act together( Gases responsibility)I'm to be in the chorus of those calling his dismissal. if he gets it together, I'll be happy and support the Fins. It is what fans do. Gase is not a fan, he is the coach. And the dolphins better be glad there are people like me around. When we stop caring whose coaching the team we will no longer be fans, and that will be bad for them!

If a thousand "that a boy's" are eliminated by one "aw shet", it doesn't mean or imply a thousand "aw shet's" are eliminated by one "that a boy". I feel that too many unsupportable "aw shet's" have been excreted during the last two years.

After what i heard about RT throwing a RB out the huddle, i don't see how gase distinguishes his likes and don't likes, he hates ajayi and juice's outbursts but RT are ok? RT has no resume to pull a move like this he is a below .500 player and good leaders don't pull stuff like this, he acts like a child after one mistake was made, someone should remind him he has 66 INT that's 66 mistakes (granted not all on him with tip balls and such) there are ways to handle stuff, maybe Wake should get all over RT when he throws a pick or goes 3 and outs back to back times. Just not a good showing and this kinda of outbursts makes me believe the whole "enjoy your practice squad paycheck" incidents happens alot more than we hear about. this team really is turning into a bottom feeder with acceptance from the front office.

I don't think ajayi was traded for lambasting other players for missed assignments. Probably the complete opposite. RT correcting an error someone else made can be hardly described as selfish. If he had done this to a fringe player or someone else on the bubble, ehhh? But I dont see how this can be seen as anything but helpful to the team. Im glad to see him stepping up and taking a leadership role.

yelling at a rookie is not leadership, he has a tom brady complex and he hasnt done anything to have it, ask any great QB any of them and i will guarantee you they would all say he could have handled it way differently. I remember when breese was at SD i was at training camp and i cant remember for the life of me the WR name but he was a rookie (walk on) with a long shot to make the squad and I remember he dropped like 3 passes in a row, Breese fed him the ball literally for like 3 or 4 plays after until he caught one. then spent like 20 minutes with him after the scrimmage working on routes i don't think the guy even made the roster. But that is an example of how to handle young guys not removing them from a huddle because they missed 1 assignment in front of the whole team.

If amendola missed an assignment then by all means yell and do whatever, hes been around long enough to know right from wrong, i just think it was way wrong for him to do it in front of everyone and not only that to a rookie those guys of everyone needs some leniency.

But part of me is hoping this was RT trying to step up and we can see more of it on the field.

Did he only miss one assignment? The other examples you gave aren't a mental error like forgetting to cover your man. That would be more like Tannehill giving him the business for not chipping correctly and working on blocks after practice. He didn't even try to block.

He ran a route when he was supposed to be blocking. Yeah he got dressed down and he should have been. I hear so much of the no more excuses, this it for Thill and or Gase. Well this is what that looks like. If you let it go youre going to get the same crap. I can bet you will never see him make the same mistake again and THAT is how it is supposed to be!

I disagree. That's exactly what leadership is. Correcting rookie mistakes. RT hasn't been as lucky as Brady, but he's been in the league a lot longer than a rookie and has every bit as much of a right to fix a player in his offense as Brady.

Exactly. Been knowing Travis since he first started posting on these forums like 15 years ago, when he was a blindly loyal super homer. Now he as evolved into a damned fine, very objective analyst. His growth over the years has very much impressed me. He is very honest and passionate, and his eye for seeing what's good and what's bad rank very high on this forum. Top 5-10 at the least. Negative comments in this thread directed toward his breakdown of the last preseason game, remind me of why the only thing worth reading in the main forum is Galant's thread of training camp tweets.

typical, he handled it way wrong, he is a rookie working in an nfl system for the first time and hes been doing it for what 7 weeks now if that? i wonder if RT missed anything his rookie season based on his antics right now he might have broke down crying if he got yelled at as a rookie. You cannot do that to a rookie if you want them to strive and make headway if you think there gonna help you be better. There are some people you can yell at and some people you have to find different ways to get through to them, this is unattainable in 7 weeks.

Not only are you still wrong, but now you're changing your reasons.

In your first post you claimed that RT's actions were wrong because "he's not Brady and has accomplished nothing". Now you're trying to claim that rookies can't be yelled at due to them being, well, rookies, and not because RT is not Brady. lol..... So, which is it? Can only Tom Brady yell at rookies or are rookies untouchable? Either belief is absurd to me.

You're using this as another way to bash RT. Gase thinks RT handled Ballage correctly. In fact, most people who know football a lot better than us agree with what RT did.

As a person that's owned three businesses and managed thousands of employees over my life, there's no "right way" or "wrong way" to correct someone making a mistake. Some people respond to yelling...others shut down completely. The key to leadership is understanding which method of communication is the most effective- not for me, but the person I'm talking to.

Why does this matter? We have no context on this story. For all we know, RT or the coaches could have pulled the rookie to the side and calmly discussed blocking assignments a dozen times. Or RT could have been acting a like a total jerk and made an example out of the kid...we don't know. The only thing that matters here is what Ballage does in practice today in the same situation. Does he let his QB get nailed again? Or does he recognize the assignment and block?

This isn't about feelings- it's about correcting mistakes and getting better.

Regardless of RT's intentions, the only part that matters is the results that comes from it. But here's the kicker- if RT said nothing, it was definitely horrible leadership no matter what. So I'd call it a step in the right direction anyway.

In the military you yell at everyone. NFL training camp, as I'm sure you know, is similar to military style training.

Rookies get yelled at, hazed, etc during their first training camp. And they get yelled at by their coaches and team veterans/leaders.

What RT did was 100% OK.
