If it is in the neighborhood of 5M I think we all have a right to be a little weary. That's Martellus type $.
Well something telling is that it's a long-term deal, while TE was a short term deal. I'm not sure if it's Kelce or Eifert but one of those two would look phenomenal in Miami.
I wouldn't put too much stock in that Jaj, as Miami offered both a multi year deal and a single year deal to Keller. He chose the latter.
actually i read he wanted a long term deal, ireland didn't blink, thats why he wasn't signed right on his visit, he came back later to accept that 1 year deal in the end
The words from his own mouth when he was interviewed said he was offered a multi-year deal but chose of his own accord a one year deal.
BenVolinPBP Brandon Gibson's cap numbers: $1.785m, $3.735m, $4.26m. Also annual workout bonuses of $35k 4 minutes ago · reply · retweet · favorite BenVolinPBP Finally got my hands on Brandon Gibson's deal: 3 years, $9.78m. Got $3.75m guaranteed: $3m signing bonus, $750k base salary
I dont think his contract keeps us from drafting a WR. I think this team having holes at T, DB(x2) TE and Pass Rushing DE keep us from drafting a WR
BenVolinPBP So realistically Brandon Gibson is only guaranteed to be here in 2013, but 2014 cap number isn't unreasonable
With $4 million guaranteed I think there's very little chance he ends up the #5 on the depth chart. The only way I see Miami diving back into the draft wide receiver market would be if they cut or trade Davone Bess.
That's about right where I expected the Gibson contract to be. Neither overly excited nor overly upset about it. I like Bess a lot -- he's a good player who can help you win games -- but if we can get something for him and draft Austin I'd be all for it. Gibson's first year cap number is $1.785M. The cap savings for releasing or trading Bess appears to be $1.883M. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are viewing Gibson/Bess like they did Dansby/Ellerbe and Burnett/Wheeler, i.e., as salary cap "trades." It doesn't look like Bess has any roster bonuses coming up, so we may have plans to trade him but may not pull the trigger until the draft.
And don't think for a second that the "leadership committee" has nothing to do with this. Besides, Bess' contract is up and we have his replacement locked up for three years.
It is what it is, but if the team got rid of guys because (or in significant part because) they were part of an ad hoc leadership committee I don't think that speaks well of the decision-makers on the team. JMO
Except for they were asking to be consulted as it pertained to player releases and such. Just trying to envision how Belichick would react to that.
I don't recall that. It came up on Hard Knocks after the Chad Johnson release, but I don't think anyone asked to be consulted on personnel decisions. As I understand it the team had a leadership council in 2011 under Sparano and most NFL teams have something like it. It's not such a novel concept.
As I was thinking, this contract in no way will preclude Miami from drafting Tavon Austin if that is the move they want to make. Personally, I think that is what they want to do.
Which is very possible considering he's in his last year. Unfortunately for most here it wont be for Austin. You just can't ignore CB and ot for a luxury pick like Austin.
It makes sense to me, but I don't even try to predict what they will do. Almost every notion of Parcells/Ireland drafting history and tendencies has been debunked and most of those commonly held notions never had much substance to them anyhow. It has been so long since the Dolphins actually drafted who I wanted them to draft that it seems almost inconceivable.
I think Austin or pass rusher is the most likely pick. It would be a luxury to spend a the #12 pick on a CB when you're most likely going to be a zone team.
He was, or so I've heard. He got on after Hard Knocks I think. That first trio were supposed to be just ad hoc until the rest of the team agreed on who to put.
man i so freaking hope you are right, i have probably seen his highlights over 20 times in the last 7 days....do i want this guy on our team badly...i could also live with patterson, but austin would be so great KB, would it be ok if i use that austin pic in your signature as my avatar ?
You can if you pick up CBs and OT in free agency. And it just so happens that those are some of the deepest positions in FA and positions with a somewhat depressed market. The $9 million per year saved on Jake Long alone may be enough to buy the top 2 CBs on the market (excluding Revis if he is considered on the market) or a quality RT and a quality CB. And there is still cap space available after that. Not to mention the 4 other picks in the top 82 and potential to trade back into the first (maybe even more than once).
It's hard to see how to take the thing about the leadership council. It just seems like it can't be a coincidence that one got cut, they failed to even make an offer for another, their interest in keeping the third seems marginal (as Jake Long now denies he had any contact with Miami after his St. Louis trip) and now a fourth one has a $3.3 million a year guy competing for his spot, and there are all kinds of trade rumors out about him. When Ben Volin asked his sources about it, he was told that the Davone Bess situation remains "fluid". That seems code to me. Seems to me like at some point the Dolphins may have decided this team is poorly led. And as it happens, the team's leaders voluntarily identified themselves. Whoops.
I said the same thing on FH. Obviously the leaders weren't leading as well as expected or they wouldn't have laid the egg versus the Titans or the Bills. Someone needs to get the team pumped up before the games.
I'm curious as to how the coaching staff and front office felt about the "need" to have a group of veterans act as a leadership council? What we know is that the staff apparently wasn't too happy when Karlos Dansby questioned a move Coach Philbin made. I can't remember what move it was, but I remember Dansby speaking out about something. I think it was Reggie Bush that was very vocal about the decision to waive Chad Johnson. I've also heard whispers that the staff wasn't too pleased with Davone Bess's decision to sit out the final three games of the season. Maybe we are seeing something to this now.
