Ghost Recon Future Soldier

I'm surprised no one is talking about this game. It released yesterday and it appears that it could be a fun change of pace for those tired of COD.

Play Future Soldier as you would Call of Duty or Battlefield and you won’t last long. It’s a punishing game in some respects, and you cannot stand out in the open and expect to survive for more than a few seconds. It forces you to think strategically, to plan ahead and use cover at all times. Often the best option is to take down the enemy one by one, carefully considering your next target in order to prevent a patrolling guard from stumbling over a dead body and raising the alarm. And sometimes the best route is to not fire a single shot at all, but to move silently to your objective without the enemy realising you’re even there.

This flexibility to tackle missions in different ways makes Ghost Recon: Future Soldier a refreshing change from the recent trend of linear shooters. It’s superbly paced too, shifting effortlessly between moments of considered calm to the flashes of pure spectacle that are de rigueur in today’s action games. Scenes of explosive carnage are peppered more frequently throughout the campaign than in previous Ghost Recons, but they fit within the narrative in a believable way. You won’t question why something is happening and are never drawn out of the experience by moments of outrageous silliness.

Many of the missions can only be completed using stealth and this constant change of tempo means the overall game is perfectly paced. As a result the 10-hour campaign is engaging throughout, and the only grumble I’d have is that the handful of helicopter gunship scenes; whilst they don’t really detract from the experience, they do feel a bit tacked on, certainly in single-player. In four-player co-op it’s a different story, because the group is split – two in the chopper and two on the ground. The guys in the sky must provide support, laying down fire while foot-soldiers help out by throwing sensor grenades to highlight incoming threats.

Co-op as a whole is a superb addition to the Future Soldier package. The entire campaign is playable with four people and some missions feel very different when playing with friends than they do alone. There’s also the added challenge of survival – you always know your back is covered if you take a bullet in single-player, but in co-op if you accidentally leave one guy to die it’s game over.

Machinima - 9/10: GRFS is a solid entry in the shooter genre, and one of the standout third-person shooter experiences on any console. The emphasis on intel and squads make this a must-have for anyone looking to play as a team and work together.

OXM US - 9.0: Future Soldier's campaign does lose its stealthy way a bit right at the end, and the presentation can be rough at times, just like the throwaway plot. Ultimately, though, the game shines not only for staying true to Ghost Recon's roots, but also for doing so while successfully balancing the memories of old fans with the modern expectations of new ones.

Joystiq - 4.5/5: Whether you're looking to play online with your friends or simply want a lengthy, entertaining military campaign, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is easy to recommend. It's one of the best military shooters I've played. It doesn't push the boundaries of what we expect from that genre, but Future Soldier takes an approach that leaves little room for stagnant gameplay or retreading ground.

Destructoid - 9.0: Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is the type of title that might be easy to overlook if you're not partial to the franchise, or even if you are tired of warfare in post-modern times, but it's a great title nonetheless. Between the impressive campaign, the myriad of co-op options and the added replayability of the mission challenges, as well as the expansive multiplayer component, it's as solid a package as military shooters provide.

GameTrailers - 8.3: If you buy games for the single-player experience it's hard to recommend Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Once you hop online it's a different story as the tactical, objective-driven modes manage to fill the five-year void left since the release of the superior Advanced Warfighter 2. It's heavily reliant on teammates who are willing to play specific roles, but with a group of dedicated soldiers it's a war that you'll want to keep fighting.

Metro - 8/10: An impressively well balanced shooter that manages to deliver a diverse and innovative feature set that should please almost everyone.

G4 - 4/5: Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is an exceptional game housed in an exceedingly generic shell. The parts that work well do so brilliantly, while those that don't only serve to make the game feel incomplete. There are things that will annoy the hell out of you, no question, but there's also a ridiculous amount of fun to be had. My advice to shooter fans: get over it. For any of its faults, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is well worth investing your efforts and multiplayer hours into.

I haven't bought a Tom Clancy game since Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1. I really enjoyed the series- but just am not tempted to get this new one. It looks good, though.

Why are you not tempted to buy it?

I bought this game last night and so far am really enjoying the multiplayer much more than COD.

I'm not a fan of the future soldier stuff.....I'd rather play crysis if I want to be invisible and stuff. Will see how it is reviewed by the community, but def. wont be getting it for the MP that is for sure. MP, I only play BF3 and Arma2.

Nothing against the game- Just need to finish Skyrim, get around to Mass Effect 3, and pick up the Assassin Creeds.

Figure those will all be cheaper than Future Soldier and will get that at a future date.
