I'm currently on sprint (don't laugh, i was in college and it was the cheapest available at the time) and my contract will run out in a few months. I'm currently in Iowa and planning on spending a lot of time on the west cost (sister is there). By the time I get a "phone" with the extras that I want I'm almost into the blackberry range so I might just get a blackberry......or whatever fits. Here's what I'm looking for... 1. Unliminted Data Plan 2. GPS capable Phone I was planning on going with Verizon but Don't want to pay for their V-Map application (It's not a true GPS apparently and requires you to be in their data networks and I go to some remote places where it won't work...plus it's $10.00 per month). I was considering getting a STORM and the GARMIN Mobile application but I've heard that it's blocked through Verizon? If they block other GPS services that REALLY pisses me off. I'm hoping for a GPS/Phone all in one. Any ideas? I'm open to other services as long as they'll work in Portland, SF, and Iowa areas. Does anyone have a Blackberry and have luck using the Garmin GPS? What is google maps all about? Thanks! Edit: I am reading now that in December of 08 Verizon unlocked the GPS component on their phones.....not sure WHICH phones but it looks like the storm is one of them. So theortically it should work? Also I keep reading about the Cell GPS not being as good as a stand alone GPS. I understand this with Google maps which uses Cell Towers to triangulate your position but am wondering about Garmin Mobile? Or Blackberry maps? Do they use the actual GPS?
Hmmm not sure what everyone has against Sprint. For $99 bucks you can get unlimited calls, messages, data, and all the GPS you won't provided the phone has a GPS receiver. I use Google maps on my HTC Diamond and it works great, along with Tom Tom 7. neither use cell phone trianglation. Google maps works just like at home and when you turn on the GPS it shows your position on the map and the direction you are travelling all in real-time. I like it better because I don't need all that turn by turn crap, I just need to know where I am in comparison to everything else.. I would say pick out a phone 1st and then I will be able to better tell you the limitations of its GPS. All the network (Verizon, Sprint, etc) Navigation tools, blow..
I don't see what everyone has against sprint either. My unlimited data is $15/MONTH were it would cost $30 everywhere else.
My daughter has GPS through T-Mobile and said it great. I don't need it myself, guess I am old school, buy a map.
sprints coverage and call quality is seriously lacking, thats what people have against sprint. its cheap because they have to be cheap. if your looking for best coverage daphins definitely go at&t or Verizon. for the "Data plan" are you looking to get emails and attatchments through those emails?
