its crap, somebody is feeding us garbage. the Department of Transportation did a survey and in March 2008, americans drove 11 billion fewer miles than they did last year. you know the miles driven had to be less in april. so why are prices skyrocketing?

Bro, I think it is because of the demands for energy in China have increased and that has lowered supplies.

even so, people are giving up their RV's and gas hog SUV's, you know the driven mileage must have been less in april. only 1 in 70 families in china have a car.

Hopefully this means people are also using alternative means of transportation like carpooling and public transit.

That's still a boatload of cars, bro.

Also, the US and China combined to use half of the worlds refined oil in 2004. Think where it is now.

China and India basically. Even if only 1% owns a car, a good chunk of the rest is using buses on an almost daily basis. And because those populations are so huge, even a few percent is a huge absolute number.
That and oil prices are not entirely set by supply and demand. There's a lot of speculation about the future of the market, and that's partially tied to political volatility in different parts of the world.

At some point, unless we get a buttload more sources of oil or change to another fuel, China will have demand enough to use ALL the available oil in the world.

number one fuel source is algae. it floats on water because its 50% oil to begin with. they believe biodiesel can be made from it. the indians have been working on it for 18 years but you've never heard a darn thing about it because the oil companies and your big investors like bush, bury it.

Actually he's right. Look at the way gas has spiked when the Bush family has been in office. Is it a small coincidence that major oil company mergers were given approval without a moment's hesitation while other mergers such as satellite radio are debated on for over a year? I think not. The government is entrenched in Big Oil's pocket. Cars get worse gas mileage every year. Research into electric cars and alternative fuel sources are buried and forgotten. Oil companies are reaping record setting profits. And a man whose family made its riches off oil is calling the shots.

Uh-huh. I'd need some documentation for that, because it sounds more like an urban legend than anything else. BTW, you do know that cars made right now by the auto makers will get 70mpg, right?
The reason alternative fuel technologies haven't taken hold yet is that most are not technologically mature enough to implement and the ones that are still cost more than gasoline, even at $4 a gallon.

Crazy. In medevial Europe the Knights would kill anyone who developed a revolutionary technique for their craft. They didnt want any one person to acquire all the wealth from their trade. This maintained a balance amongst the working class.

It appears that a 'customer first' business model has taken a back seat to a 'profit first' model. Reminds me of that motivational poster I saw the other day: "Exxon, when Billions just aren't enough"

i don't know if you could find any documentation on it at this point in time. i remember it because i was in school at the time. the changes that union wanted to make was to make it safer, supposedly. the main flaw was the gas was changed to a vapor before it entered the carburator, there was always a pool of gas in the lines or exposed all together.

    wrong on so many levels.

If I wanted to..I could also say that the prices HAVE SKYROCKETTED SINCE the Democrats took Congress. THAT would be a fact. Look at the price of Oil since the Dems took over.

But who cares about those..it gets in the way of the convenient left wing talking point.

The real truth is that the price of Oil has nothing to do with the president or the Dems that took over..although...you can blame them for not wanting to increase supply.

didn't read the whole article, did ya!

Now a retired Cornish mechanic has enlisted the help of the University of Plymouth to rebuild Pogue’s revolutionary carburetor, known as the Winnipeg, from blueprints he found hidden beneath a sheet of plywood in the box. The controversial plans once caused panic among oil companies and rocked the Toronto Stock Exchange when tests carried out on the carburetor in the 1930s proved that it worked.

Interesting documentary called Who Killed the Electric Car? For those talking about companies killing alternate fuel vehicles in the development stage.

that was from an article taken off the computer in 1998, these plans weren't found and it re-tested in 2003.

don't be so negative, read the entire article plus dates before you try and prove somebody wrong. as near as i can figure they're two entirely different scenarios

That movie is about the car I cited, the EV1 (at least a great amount of the movie is about that).

No, read the Snopes link. Both articles deal with the Pogue carburetor. Plus, the article you cited doesn't mention anything about the carburetor being found to work, only that plans were found for it.

there is a finite supply of natural resources, with an ever-growing world population.... this is pretty straight-forward.

don't understand what the confusion is about. the laws of supply & demand make sense and hold true.

good grief, i even hi-lighted it.

The controversial plans once caused panic among oil companies and rocked the Toronto Stock Exchange when tests carried out on the carburetor in the 1930s proved that it worked.

i don't have a lot of faith in Snopes. i heard if you locked the keys in the car, somebody could send a signal over a cell phone and unlock the doors, snopes says it false. well i beg to differ, i saw somebody open their car that way at my dentists office. didn't work the first time but she put her cell on external speaker and it worked like a champ. so snopes doesn't know it all. i believe the article

there is no confusion, americans drive an average of 3 trillion miles a year. i think our demand has dropped more than chinas has increased.

The fact that your article says it worked then doesn't prove it worked then. I trust Snopes over that article.

nothing on the internet is going to be 100% accurate, but snopes would be more trustworthy than a random article.

you're starting to sound like a conspiracy theorist ;)

that may very well be, but they tell you at jury duty, "when somebody is caught in a lie, take everything with a grain of salt," snopes was wrong, bottom line.
