Omar Kelly tweeted that Vontae Davis is ranked BEHIND Benny Sapp for CB's in the entire league. How the hell is that even possible?? VD went on like a 3 game stretch where he wasn't even targeted...and has only given up ONE big play all season. How do they come up with these numbers and rankings? I know a lot of people love PFF's work so hopefully they can explain, because there's no way you can rank Sapp ahead of Davis. There's just no way.

In good PFF news, Kelly also tweets that Chad Henne is the 11th ranked quarterback.

Production per snap based on the opinions of the people who watched the games.

    Opinions.

And how can someone who watches the games possibly come up with that "opinion"?

Well RR, keep in mind Davis is matched up on the opponents best Wr so there will be leakage, the proper metric, for us is explosive plays surrendered, giving yds and completions is not a real concern, it is long plays that lead to fast scores for the opponent.

PFF may crunch the numbers, however they do not know the design of the defense.

We have the number 1 ranked Offense on PFF. It's not always about production. It's all about the metric they use. Obviously Davis is the better corner overall but based on Sapp's nickel/slot responsibilities, he's doing what he's supposed to do more often. In zone coverage especially, a play near you is not necessarily your fault.

Yeah, but like I said, Vontae Davis is having a really good year. Benny Sapp, not so much. That's crystal clear to anyone who watches the Dolphins play. VD has given up one big play all season (the Jennings 86 yard TD in Green Bay), he's had multiple games where the quarterback didn't even throw against him. Sapp has given up big plays all season long. It just makes no sense, and I know PFF is a well respected site for the work they do. However, this is just asinine.

Maybe, just maybe, Sapp is having a better season than people who watch on television can see. That there are some people who dislike him just because he was traded for their favorite player who is well under the 100 catches with Brett Farve that people predicted.

Or it could be that fans have huge unrealistic expectations of players and are angry every time a corner gets a catch on them.

Umm, no. I actually like Benny Sapp, and I don't get angry at my corners for giving up catches. I get mad when they give up big plays, like Sapp has done a lot this season.

First, you need to understand that my big plays for a corner isn't just big yardage plays, but also 3rd downs that they allow for first downs. Like I said, I like Sapp and think he hasn't been as bad as some may think, but he gives up quite a few big plays.

You need to understand "quite a few" is not a number, nor does it quantify what is, "a lot".

I like Benny Sapp more than most, I do think with Davis and Smith on the field he wears the "throw at him" mark but he does okay with it, not great, not bad.

I am not arguing that Sapp is better than Davis or Smith. I do not think he is nearly as bad as some people make him out to be.

LOL. What do you want me to do? Go back and watch every game and count? I've seen every snap this season and while I don't think Sapp has been as bad as others have said, Vontae Davis has been much, much better.

Agreed, he is not Reggie Howard or Traveres "asbestos helmet" Tillman, he does everything okay usually makes the tackles he should make doesn't look lost either.

Listen to VD come up and make the hit on D.McFadden. Vontae delivers, celebrates and gives the uh oh. Wind knocked out. Eating grass.
That's a good young CB folks.

It would be interesting where PFF puts Walter McFadden..... Guy got toasted all day.

personally i find pff's rankings a joke. i take their opinions about as seriously as i do some random fanspost on the miami herald. and its not about this story but rather every position they rank. either their system or their analysis of plays is off

While I agree, Davis isn't having a great season, the past month he has been average at best.

First 2 or 3 games yes, since than no. He is missing tackles, he has gotten beat long a few times. He has not been playing well, Smith has been playing better since he went back in as a starter.

He's been beaten long once all season. Besides the Jennings play against the Packers, he hasn't given up a big play all season, that's a major improvement from last year. I will agree that he has missed a few tackles but he's also made some great tackles at or behind the LOS as well.

To further explain PFF's rankings, Sapp is at #36 with a 1.2 overall grade. He has a 0.5 in coverage, a 0.2 vs the run, -0.1 on penalties, and 0.6 on a pass rush.

Davis is #40 with an overall grade of 0.6. He has a -2.0 in coverage, 1.3 vs the run, -1.8 on penalties, and -0,5 on a pass rush.

NFL rankings agree that Sapp is rated higher. Now, when you filter out all the CB's not playing 75% of the teams snaps, Davis is at #19.

Sean Smith is at #17 with a 4.9 overall grade. He is 2.6 in coverage, 0.2 vs the run, 1.5 with no penalties, and 0,6 on a pass rush. NFL rankings have him much higher, #2 or #3 I believe.

PFF grade the overall performance of a player but, also does break it down, as you can see. This does not change Sapp vs Davis. In other cases, a CB may do well against the run and rushing the QB, without being all that good in coverage. To me, this is somewhat misleading because I think coverage should have a much higher input on a CB.

PFF's rankings are cumulative so if a player gets a really high or poor score in one game it can really impact rankings. I think PFF does a better job of counting plays where there were missed tackles or passes were completed on a CB. Those things are less subjective.

As for VD he has struggled quite a bit lately. He may have only been beaten on one "big play" (depending on your definition of "big play"), but he has been beaten quite a bit on smaller plays the last few weeks. And his usually very good run support has been missing as well. I don't agree that VD has "clearly" been better at his job than Sapp has been at his this season. VD is certainly the better talent, but he's going through a rough patch.

    Davis has been on a roller coaster this season. His per game grades are 0.9, 2.6, -0.7, 2.4, -6, -0.6, 0, -9, -0.3, 1.5, and a -1.2. Not quite what I expected.

Adam, If I just looked at their overall rankings as fact, I'd be LMAO with ya. However, ya gotta look at how they got there. Take Fasano for a VG example. They rank his as the #2 TE in all of football. However, when you look across their board, that is because he is #2 in run blocking, and most others suck doing it. If you look at pass catching, there are 20 ahead of him.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

    Blank, 0.3, -0.9, 0, -1.5, 1.0, 2.2, 1.1, 0.7, 0.1, -0.2. Not as great as I had thought but, still good and consistent.

I sincerely believe that the light is gonna go on for both Smith and Davis, and they will both be very special.

So basically from about the 6th game on Smith's had one monster game, a couple of good games and no horrid ones. Davis has only had one good game since about the 5th game on and he's had about three games that were bad to horrid. Hopefully we'll get t a point where they are both playing well at the same time.

Aren't Smith's numbers misleading since he plays safety in a lot of formations now? I'm not really sure how these grades work.

Thats one hell of a metric if we're the #1 ranked offense.

Don't let Dan Henning hear this...........please.
