http://www.footballoutsiders.com/film-room/2012/film-room-49ers-dolphins Football outsiders does a really nice job of breaking things down. It's nice to see that they like what Tannehill has been doing but I'm glad they see the underutilized talent that is Charles Clay. I'd love to see him become more of a regular cog in this offense.
I think it's hard to also talk about Clay as a secret weapon, when he's not been performing all that well or efficiently. That's not really right. The Dolphins were losing on cutbacks(and on one case, a field-reversal) off of zone plays.
That's what makes him so secret. If he were awesome all the time then everyone would know about him. Hopefully he'll start performing well enough to make people question how we kept him secret for so long.
I see Clay as more of a weapon who needs to act like a weapon. I think Thigpen can be considered a secret weapon if he is used more. I love his quickness.
I would also like to see more of Thigpen on offense. It puzzles me that we haven't. It's not just his quickness, it's that he's very decisive and gets upfield. I thought he looked good on offense in the preseason.
I'd love to see a quick screen to him and see what happens. A quick screen to someone like Bess is like six yards at best.
I think they are recognizing that Clay is a potential weapon that can be a potential matchup problem .Other unknown players who could be troublesome and where there is not much film on are Thigpen and Mathews
I hope Charles Clay continues to develop, but I don't see how you can even think of him remotely being a weapon. More often than not he has been absent this season and has made several mistakes. I hope he has a nice week but it isn't something I would ever count on.
I have no problem with Martin at LT at all. The best in the league would have a hard time with the 9ers defense on that side but my biggest concern is Nate Garner. Its pretty clear why he is not a starter.
Clay can be a secret weapon. He's done it before. Clay's problem thus far has been consistency. If he become more consistent he'd be a solid weapon for our offense as he can be a tough match-up for defenses.
Clay has definately struggled when used down the seam, but I dont understand why the team doesnt use him more on shorter passes toward the sidelines on 1st and 2nd down. Let him beat the LB and get 5-7 yards.
