Ryan Tannehill: 4 years, $12.6 million.
David Garrard: 1 year, $3.35 million.
Matt Moore: 1 year, $2.5 million.

Yeah, Tannehill is winning the money sweepstakes at the Dolphins QB position.

Further, on a four year deal, you want your QBOTF to play sooner rather than later. You do not want to be in the position of having waited to play your young QB, only to be confronted with the decision of whether or not you've seen enough in limited time to give him a contract extension or let him walk and go with someone else. You want as large a sample size as possible.

If Tannehill's camp and preseason performance is roughly equal with Garrard or Moore, then he should start.

I just want to tweak this a little bit..... which I did in blue.
Garrard is winning the money sweepstakes with Moore not very far behind Tannehill.

It sounds like you're saying this as if 4 year contracts are new to football or that people are saying Tannehill should sit for 2 years, and I say that b/c you argued against BPK's mentioning of Marino sitting [even though it was for only 5 games].

Marino's was a 4 year contract, and I'm sure he's not the only one. Brees' was 4 years and he sat an entire season.

I agree, if Tannehill is roughly equal to Garrard or Moore come opening day, then you could start him.
However, being worried about his future contract is not a reason to start a QB early.
In another thread I listed how many of NFL's top 20 all time passers (yardage, TD, and QBR) started right away, and the numbers were overwhelmingly small. Apparently, starting from day 1 does not translate to better success; seems almost the opposite actually.

All great points. I really think waiting comes down to how well we control our emotional impatience to start the future *now*.

I would love to see him start from week 1, but history tells us that he's likely better off to wait till at least week 6 from all the looking into that I did.

Shula wasn't Marinos college coach. Tannehill has one advantage with Sherman and running the same basic system from college with the same coach. Does Tannehill have the natural ability to compare with Marino? That's a big plate to fill.

A interesting feature Tannehill brings is his experience as a WR. This could really help him develop into a great QB. How many seasons before he breaks Dans career rushing yardage?

This game is to me a pretty close microcosm of Marino's career.
