We all saw a lot of the lines being drafted. I was surprised not to see a LBer or DB taken. I know there are a few people here (Rocky Raccoon comes to mind) who have said that our DBs are under-rated all year long; but I've got to say our DBs have had a few plays in quite a few games that have won the game for us. Of recent are the wins against St. Louis and yesterday against the Bills. I've gotta eat some crow and say that I like what the FO saw in the offseason that allowed them to not draft or pick up a high priced DB in FA.
Losman erractic arm greatly contributed to that W on several wide open yet over thrown (by a frigggin mile no less) receivers for TDs. And one bad decision to underthrow one. Thank you JP! Do I think our DBs are horrific, no, I have come to appreciate that a lack of pressure contributes to our DB issues (tackling not part of that statement). So I think we have a bunch of no-name DBs, if we can increase pressure by improving our front 7 then I think our DBs could start to become more name then no-name. Although being no-name never hurt the Dolphins before!! You win in the Trenches, and if we have a weakness its Front 7 D pressure to compliment JPorter.
Considering that we're likely to keep Will Allen, Micheal Lehan, Andre Goodman (re-sign), Jason Allen, and possibly Joey Thomas I'd put CB amongst the later needs this off-season. If anything FS will be addressed first. Sure I'd love to have a franchise #1 CB who's taller, but as of now I'd have to say we just can't draft everything, we only have so many picks. The most effective strategy would be to get some more pressure from the front seven. Pittsburgh's CBs are nothing amazing. They just have two good pass rushers rather than just one.
I also was very concerned that Parcells did not bring in any d-backs through the draft, especially after the way Randy Moss killed us last year, but I think we had to build our O and D-lines first, and we can add LB's and D-Backs with this upcoming draft. I don't see any Ed Reed type D-backs this upcoming draft, but we can probably find some good cover men who can also tackle. I like Macho Harris of Va Tech as he is also a great punt and kick returner with great hands/speed.
There are some very good ones, but on a rebuilding team (we still are, in many phases) picking a CB is a bit silly. If we were to get basically our own Lamar Woodley, you'd hardly see those huge days from Matt Cassell against us.
While I know I dont understand everything the FO does, I DO know they know what they are doing. They have a blueprint to sucess and are useing it. I dont think we are finished drafting OLmem either. Maybe even 2 more this time. We need depth big time, and the guys we have, even at the start of the year, werent exactly world beaters. Some of them, not all. With the type of team we are becoming, one or two more wouldnt suprise me at all.
Ehh...well...let's keep in mind that the players the FO did bring in or re-sign are not the ones who are winning games for us, the Torbors and Nate Jones are not making a huge difference for us at the moment. Basically, our Secondary is playing better because it is healthier this year, but keep in mind, outside of Jason Allen, all of those players are 30yrs old.. Now our Linebacking depth is so improved though, and that deserves a tip o' jar,but the secondary...man I'd love to have a young safety playing Randal Hill's spot this season.
You know what the FO deserves the most credit for? Both our starting guards have gone down with season ending injuries and yet the o-line is still functioning. That's impressive. (It's not a dominant o-line, but it is functioning)
It would be nice to get everything we need in one season but it just can't be done. I consider us very fortunate that we got all of the good players we did get, including the draft and free agents. This year can be considered a success just by the fact that we aquired Bill Parcells to run the organization and he brought in a good GM and a good head coach. Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland know what we need and aren't ignoring any positions but you have to start somewhere and they obviously set priorities and DB wasn't at the top of the list. They will address more needs in next years draft and if it is half as successfull as this years we should be more than pleased.
And that is what has me excited as can be about next year, Ireland and Tuna and the Staff have had a solid year to evaluate who is who on the roster, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year, what better environment to evaluate guys like Jason Allen or Matt Roth or Vern Carey or Randal Hill? Safeties are not that hard to find, as long as you know you will need one, they rarely are high picks unless they are just the BPA and the "best" at the Safety position by a huge difference. A full year of seeing who will stay after practice and work, who shows up early or on a off day at the film room?
You can't overturn an entire roster in one year. The fact that they didn't bring in high profile DB's through the draft or FA isn't telling about whether our secondary is talented or not. IMO it simply says that this FO crew has a blueprint for building a team. They went after the pieces that they believe should come first. Linemen and ST's role players. I can't imagine them not wanting to upgrade this secondary going into next year.
If we are to add anything to the secondary this year, it's likely to be through free agency. I agree that FS is probably the #1 need in the secondary, but another good cornerback (Bryan McFadden) would be helpful. It would allow us to slide Goodman to the Nickel and utilize Lehan in the Dime. As to the talent we currently have on the team, I'm not confident that Jason Allen will be a Dolphin next year, in fact if he is I'd be pretty surprised. Renaldo Hill is terrible, and Yeremiah Bell is going to want a lot of change. I don't think we will turn over the entire secondary, but it's conceivable we could be heading into next season with 2 to 3 new starters in the defensive backfield.
