I had to watch them without sound. Looks cool though!

If no one else gives the details before lunchtime, I'll be able to watch them with sound then.

 

Ok im not real familiar with the on line stuff but Ill tell you what he talked about...with the xmb you will be able to while in game acess your IMs (and respond) set up your blue tooth acess the browser you can also put whatever music you would like as the background.. with out ever actually exiting the game.

 

When you say "IMs" do they mean Sony's messaging system? Or will there be some kind of AIM/Yahoo integration (not sure if they touched on it)?

I downloaded it last night and its very convenient. I haven't tried out a lot of the features yet but the in-game XMB is wonderful in terms of making the whole PS3 flow so much better. As far as the trophies go right now there isn't a lot of games supported but that is supposed to pick up as game developers put out patches for old games and add it in for new ones.

Obviously you have no choice but to download it but it is well worth it as it makes everything so much easier.

Some key features I've tried and loved so far are:

the ability to message friends in-game
the new clock feature is handy

I'm sure the more I try the more I'll learn but for right now the 2.40 update delivers on what was promised and still has room to grow (its sad PS3 owners are just now getting the features the 360 has had forever and getting excited over it and that includes me).

And so you should be as this update has been treated as something on the same level as the 2nd coming.

 

owning a ps3 means getting excited about firmware updates more than games...

Glad I skipped downloading it this morning.

 

The first link doesn't work and the second link leaves me asking questions. Since Sony has pulled it does it mean us with 2.40 already will be forced to downgrade or can we keep it. Also since a new 2.40 will have to be released I wonder how long it will take and if us 2.40 owners will need to switch to it?

When was it down (rhetorical question) because I was checking around including the PS3 website and the update is still up. So I was beginning to wonder. Still another great blunder by Sony, though.

Yeah this whole thing is freaking confusing because now on the official PlayStation support website the update is down but on the main PS3 website it is up.

Who knows what's going on but I guess its down.

 

Luckily I haven't had any problems with the 2.4 FW.

 

I was gonna say, I turned mine on last night to download it and it said I already had the most recent update (2.36).

 

Yeah its cool, no issues on my end though.

Too bad the trophies arent retero active, which means that if you got the Big Boss Emblem in MGS4(and assuming there is a trophy that is essentially the same thing.)

Then you're in luck, you get to do it again.

Other than that gripe its a pretty cool update

 

The cool thing is that some actually will be Retroactive. Some WarHawk trophies will be retroactive.

I think so far Warhawk, Burnout:Paradise, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Pain, and Super Stardust HD are/will be trophy compatible but not much else. The bad news is that COD4 and other prominent games are not going to be compatible (at least yet).

Well it looks like the next update for the PS3 will be out around the middle of this week. It is called 2.41 and looks to correct the problems that the 2.40 update caused for some PS3 users.

2.41 is out now. Supposedlyy fixes the problems from 2.4, though someone at AVS said they bricked their console after playing for an hour with 2.41

 

Oh jeez that doesn't surprise me. The problem with 2.40 was that it was a coding default with the XMB (especially if you had a custom theme) so when 2.40 rebooted your system to install your update that is where things went wrong (either your system bricked or your problems started). Then once all those reports came out people got paranoid and any problem their PS3 had they blamed it on 2.40 (I think lots of people wanted their broke PS3 fixed for free and blamed it on 2.40). Plus if you removed your hard drive and popped it in or if you re-formatted it on your PC then you were good to go (still that doesn't take the blame off Sony for their majorly stupid blunder).

So if the guy played it for an hour I doubt it was 2.41 but still I'll watch the PS message boards and see whats happening before I go from 2.40 (which works great) to 2.41.

I just got 2.41 over my lunch break, but haven't played anything yet. We'll see tonight. I do notice some new icons (playlists for example).

 

It won't blow you away. It is great in terms of flow in-game (contacting friends, etc.) but hardly any in-game music works unless the game already supports it (or else your waiting on a patch) and trophy support is scarce. In the long run it'll be great but for now its a much needed addition that still isn't up to par with the 360 dashboard.

Its just going to take baby steps. Plus they can't really give in-game music until they figure how to get around the 360 patents.
