So I noticed out of the blue both were turned off. When I try and turn them back on, it just doesn't do anything. I click turn on, and it just stays off. I googled some stuff and it says I could have spyware or virus. I ran my virus scanner and nothing. I downloaded a recommended spy and malware program, ran that with nothing returned. So not sure where to go from here.

    Please help.

Sometimes new laptops come with a free year of a virus software.....

Is that the case? Is it installed?

Honestly I would never trust that free trial pre-loaded Norton crap they usually come with. You actually might just be better off removing that and installing Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast (highly recommended and I'll tell you why).

    Um. Try this.

Download & install Avast Free Antivirus.

When you download it, update it, then:

Security --> Boot-time scan (may need to scroll down) --> restart your pc.

Let the scan run. This should catch most/all baddies, if present.

    Hope this helps, Nappy.

Never run more than one antivirus is easy to remember too but you nailed. Nothing more compromised than an out of date version of Norton.

Which means what? Windows 7 or Windows 8?

If it's Windows 8, it has built-in anti-everything and you don't need another application.

Uninstall Norton. Install MSE. Run Scan. Continue with your day.

This. But if he's running Windows 8, MSE is built in under the name Windows Defender.

There's usually an obnoxious sticker somewhere.

Otherwise, you should know just by the interface. Windows 8 has a Start Screen with colored tiles; Windows 7 has a taskbar and window borders that look like glass.

    Live from the Internet.
To take this one step further, register with avast!, and get a code to activate it for a year. In a year, repeat the process.
Registration doesn't cost anything just your regular email/password crapola.
