So FF8 (the only Final Fantasy game besides that crappy online one that I haven't beaten) is available for download on PSN for $9.99

I downloaded it and will attempt to complete my legacy as an RPG nerd.

I got to the end, or at least very close to the end, too soon. It ended up trapping me as I couldn't leave, and didn't do everything I should've before going there. Needless to say the game ended for me at that point.

So I still have to beat it as well.

RPG nerd here too. I'm like you though and never beat 8 even though I have it. I had played through most of it nd had my memory card with the save file get borrowed and not returned, and just didn't have it in me to do it over. I did beat the online FF though :P, well kinda... in my mind anyway.

trippiest ending to a FF RPG that i can remember...my 2nd least favorite since FF7 (FF9 takes that cookie, though i never played X2). Overall decent game.

You new schoolers just couldn't get the awesomeness of Final Fantasy 9. I freaking love that game.

Final Fantasy VIII was my least favorite Final Fantasy until I played XII. I hated the junk system and the dream/past sequences. I did play the card game enough to get an item make my magic user able to cast anything for just one magic point.

Still the end was just annoying. I hate
bosses that are not really end bosses. I spent the entire game wanting to beat down the end boss and then she joined my party and I had to kill someone who is in the future. I do not know why Square loves to throw in a bigger threat. It is mostly annoying.

IX was one of my favs. I've said it before and I'll repeat now. 9 was better than 7, 8, and 10. 7 gets more love than it deserves because it's the first one in 3D, people have a limitless nerd boner for anything Sephiroth, and it's a lot of people's first trip into Final Fantasy. Old schoolers like me that's conquered the SNES outings, and emulated the Japanese FFV well before FF7 came out know that 9 is the real deal.

EDIT - Obviously, I'm not saying 7 is a bad game. Just a tad over rated imo. So is FF10...That is WAY overrated.

9 was waaaaaay better than 8. And I even thought 8 was ok. I liked 10 more than 9, but I thought 9 was real good.

I really liked the battles in 10. It actually made it so I could level up my entire party.

I feel that XIII was by far the worst for party leveling. I had three characters that I practically never used and was quite upset when I had to use them.

Final Fantasy VII is pretty over rated.

You keep mentioning XIII Dupree, did you get some early import? That's not even getting into why you mentioned XXII.

It's hard for me to compare 8 or 9 with the others because I never beat them, one of these rainy days... I got halfway with 8 and close with 9, twice. One time I had my memory card not get returned, and another time I just got distracted by other things and never finished. So I can't really say one of those better than another. I really enjoyed 7 a lot though. I know a lot of people say it's overrated and people do get crazy sometimes with it, but we all have our own tastes and it did it for me. I liked 10 a lot too, those games were just memorable for me. It hasn't been that long but I can't seem to remember as much about 12 as the others. Remember it wasn't bad, but the job system kind of let you do a little of everything. I like a job system being a little more strict and traditional.

Did anyone mess with 11 or plan on messing with 14 when it comes out? For those that don't know 11 and 14 are both MMORPGs (online).

I'm not big on games that you have to pay a fee to play on top of already buying the game.

I understand the fee thing but to have so much content and to update it, I don't think it's too bad. The time I spent playing a MMORPG I saved a lot of money because I wasn't using a console much with my spare gaming time. A year's worth of a MMORPG fee is around $180, basically what three new games cost ya.

Looking forward to 14 too, that and the Star Wars MMO (The Old Republic). Hoping one of those will be pretty good.

    FF snob..... :shifty:

No, but honestly I've been playing FF since the NES days (have the original cartridge actually) and 7 stands out as the best for many reasons (The materia system ROCKED).

But the Materia system is a direct (almost exact) draw from the Magecite system in FF6.

Yeah, I'm with ya Dupree. I'm not playing any MMOs right now and I guess when TOR comes out I can get addicted and say I'm making up for lost time. Have you played either of the KOTOR games?

Agreed. Not very many games can throw you for a loop the way KOTOR does when you find out the big secret. Wow what a great game

It was also the first game that made me feel like a jerk for being evil.

None of those reasons are why I dug FF7 so much. It was absolutely one of the most beautifully created soundtracks I had heard up to that point. It really blew me away and set the mood for the story so well.

heh The plot twist in KOTOR was jaw-dropping. Though I was the opposite Dupree, the game really made me enjoy being evil. From the part where you meet back up with Bastila and Jolee on top of the temple until the end I played with a grin across my face. In TOR I will be playing for the dark side.

    Sorry for the slight derail...

Ha..i typed out a fairly long response as to why I liked 7 the best but the post didn't take.

It boils down to depth, Character development, and atmostphere for me. The world was beautifully created and had one of the best game soundtracks (or any soundtrack for that matter) of all time IMO. It allowed me to get drawn in from the first misson untill the very end..tons of twists and turns and great character development are what sets it apart to me.

I know 4 is the benchmark and I guess it probably boils down to atmosphere as being the main difference.

You are all on crack. 7 is the best FF ever. 6 is a close second but I just didn't get into the characters like 7 did. That and having probably the most emotional scene in video game history and it's not that hard of a choice for me.

    Yes I'm biased
