The interesting thing about the remasters is the selective quality enhancement. Main characters obviously get the most work, while secondary characters and NPCs get less work.

Also, in gameplay news, they are apparently allowing characters to use 2 jobs simultaneously.

Here's an article that includes that. Looks like you need to unlock the ability first.

FFXV patch 1.09 is out. They've added yet another PS4 Pro mode, called "Stable Mode", because the last time they tried a PS4 Pro mode the FPS bounced between 20-50 FPS depending on scene and situation. Timed quests are back, this time fishing, and you can win the Afrojack Sword. Yes, this is a real thing.

I loved using the Gambit system the first time around to heal. I would make healing the number one priority of one of my party members, often Fran or Ashe, and then not have to manually worry about it unless something major happened. What I learned in FF12, and the systems I came up with, then became the foundation for how I set things up in other later games that allow the player to customize in this way. Its too bad that today's games seem to have mostly gone away from it.

It'll be interesting to see how the Gambit system has been revised. It's not the original, and it's not the IZJS version. It's something different. Supposedly.

    They already did, though.

I think they should leave the FF12 world in specific, and the Ivalice concept in general, alone, unless Yasumi Matsuno returns. It's his brain child and he should be the only one to continue making those games.

I would love a Final Fantasy Tactics II.

Oh, and, no reaction to that Episode Prompto trailer? This DLC looks incredible, and should definitely help answer Chapter 13's backstory.

Its ok. Not really what I'm looking or waiting for from the game. But I'm willing to give them a lot of time.

Thats interesting. I'd seen the title's name before. But really, no matter how cannon they're considered to be, I basically disregard handheld or mobile titles. I'm only interested in something that I can play on my console.

Well, a lot of the other things that have been thrown out or proposed. The ability to permenantly add other characters to the party and swap them in and out. More weapons, gear, and outfits. The ability to explore other areas more in depth/again. Things like that.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be interested in playing all of the other story sections when they're out, as one big new bunch. They're just not the top of my list.

Party character swapping is supposedly coming in the Companions DLC. Each patch adds new equipment and outfits. Re-exploration can be done in Chapter 15.

I think they're using the DLC to explore the non-Lucis continents. Episode Ignis will almost certainly take place in Altissia.

People waiting for some sort of complete edition of FF15, or the PC version, are getting one hell of a game. Episode Prompto is pretty good.

Sometimes you get lucky with things like that. I did with ME2. I'm playing the Skyrim remaster right now (literally, right now), and its a big jump from the original release on the PS3.

I'm hoping that the eventual end product of FF15 is as seamless as the complete Witcher 3.

I wouldn't say seamless is the right word. Just… complete is enough.

As much as I've been desperately looking forward to the game for years, I think I may actually wait a few weeks and make sure that there aren't any major issues that need patched before I jump in.

That's generally good policy with any game. But you can probably expect a day one patch for this.

I went ahead and picked it up yesterday because I was already out shopping. Played for about two hours, and had completely forgotten about the LONG intro to the game before you ever get control of one of your permenant characters! I think that I have a good idea about how I want to set up most of my characters with their first job.

I'll have to put thought into their second. I chose Shikari for Vaan, as it seemed a pretty obvious choice. And even though I knew it was coming, it was still a big change that when I went shopping for the first time, even after adding level two skills to weapons and armor, that I couldn't buy and equip most of what was available. From square one, it changes how I played through the first time, and that's going to add a fun challenge.

For all the criticism S-E takes about re-releasing and remaking games, they at least go to the trouble of enhancing them. When it's said that there are 3 versions of FF12, they are quite literally 3 different versions, and play like entirely different RPGs.

Its been interesting to read the press about FF12 this week, and see a lot of people go "my bad" with how they originally treated the game back in 2006. Between the fact that it was released at the very, very end of the PS2's run as the dominant console, or the fact that it was ahead of its time in some ways, its good to see others giving the game the same love that I always have.

The amount of "my bad" is disingenuous as hell. Many of these same people didn't even review games a decade ago. And it just goes to show that the opinions of gaming writers can generally be disregarded.

Its striking, when comparing FF12 to 15, having played the other only a few months ago now, how much better 12's story is. So many of the characters are rounded, believable people, with their own motivations. The character animation and voice acting in the cut scenes hold up even today. They really did a terrific job back then with it all.

I know I'm needlessly getting my hopes up, but a return to Ivalace for FF16 would be awesome. IMO, its clearly the best world that Square has ever created.

I wouldn't say 12's story is necessarily better, since a. 15 is still a work in progress, and b. 15 implies a lot of its story rather than outright shows it like 12 does. But yes, 12's story is fantastic.

Might be the best world Square-Enix ever created, but it's not even the best world Yasumi Matsuno has created.

I haven't seen anything regarding the US, but indications are that FF12 has sold really, really well in the UK and in Japan.

I don't totally agree with every point that this article makes, but I do agree with the general idea. Similar to what I was saying the other day. Both games are absolute technical marvels of their day, but 12 has life and heart and depth that 15 is lacking.

Really though, I want more of both, but for different reasons. More of Ivalice, so that I can see this magnificent world realized with today's technology and voice acting. More of Eos, so that I can see what they can do to fill their world with a better story and characters beyond the main four who aren't just cardboard cutouts.

I really disagree with that article. FF15 tries to do something different by incorporating open world concepts. FF12 didn't really do open world as much as it tried to adapt years-old MMORPG elements to single player RPGs. FF12 wasn't really "new" in the sense that its elements had never been seen before, it was new in how it tried to advance past the turn-based concept.

I disagree that FF15 lacks heart. Play the DLCs. They answer a LOT of questions and fill quite a lot in.

Also, Ardyn is possibly the best villain in the entire FF series. Then again, it depends on if you categorize him as an anti-hero…

I've read that about FF12 before, but I've never played a MMO (at least one that wasn't text based), so it was a totally new idea for me at the time, and was something that other later games I played seemed to build on, like the first two Dragon Age games.

As far as FF15 and Ardyn, I guess that I'll reassess after I play all of the DLC. I found it very barren the first time through. No one's motivations and reasons were explained very well. I needed a TON more depth of story.

They used the "show, don't tell" method. The main game takes place from Noctis' POV. He doesn't always know everything. And that's why it feels jarring. I complained about this while playing it, but I'm more accepting of it now. With the DLC taking place from other characters' POVs, it ties things in more neatly.

Understood. I'll see everything they offer eventually. I still think that they could have used the method they did, but incorporate other knowledge via the use of someone telling a story, or Noctis watching a vid or reading a book/note. FF games have done all of that in the past, to great effect, going back to the days where they had to tell everything visually. There seemed to be a lot that was left 95% unsaid, where they could have mined so much of that for more actual storytelling.
