"minor victory"? They get a game that used to be an exclusive in the states that is a system mover while not even having to pay a cent for it. It is being ported because of the install base in the US. It is one of the games that people buy systems for.

It is at least a decent victory, if not pretty good victory.

it's definitely one of the biggest victories in recent console war history wouldn't you say?

Well even if Sony does have something up their sleeves they will more than likely make a not to distant future release date for it and then delay it for a year or more like they do everything else. We'll see but I am not expecting Sony to pop any big surprises today.

Plus the FFXIII is a big deal especially now that I realize that they ported it to the 360 because of install base and not Microsoft paying them off. That basically says that by the time FFXIII releases (end of next year I believe) Square Enix has no faith that the PS3 could have a larger install base than the 360, which is a huge smack in the face to Sony.

Why is that a smack in the face?

The PS3 is light years ahead in Japan, and even though it is a year behind here its numbers are still respectable. This is all about SE wanting to maximize their own profit, it was not done to slight Sony.

    Simple question:

Do you honestly think that if the console sales numbers for the PS3 and 360 were reversed that Square Enix would have done a dual release?

Personally I'm happy they are. I have no interest in getting a PS3. I do however have a 360 and am elated that FF will be for it also. I dont see how anyone can get so upset about dual releases. You still get the game regardless. I dont understand how sharing the wealth so to speak causes turmoil with gamers.

Personally I loathe RPGs and FF is included in that but still when a major gaming franchise jumps ship its major news for gamers. I don't care that the franchise is jumping ship as I wouldn't buy it but its still fairly major damage to the PS3 as it was a system mover. I'm not sure how much you like FF but it may have made you at least wish you had a PS3 whereas now you couldn't care less or maybe it wouldn't made a difference either way but I think you can see what I mean.

Well they do have some interesting titles. I think MAG will have to be a success for the PS3 to sway people away from the 360. I'm guessing the 360 will have to get their own MAG type game maybe in Halo form?

I honestly think SE would have considered it. Why not? I doubt even if the numbers were reversed and they did a dual release that they'd be losing money for either system. Games cost a lot of money, especially ones that take up the time and resources like FF. They need to get all the money they can back from that game.

Not to mention, if the numbers were reversed they'd have to do a dual release because no one in Japan would be able to buy it if it came out for PS3 (with reversed numbers). :tongue2:

08 has already been a very solid year for them IMO. Everyone was claiming them all but dead and out of the race this time last year. System sales have been very good, GT5 Pro, MGS 4, and all the big cross platforms have sold very well and they still have Little Big Planet and Socom yet to come, among others.

Microsoft is hitting back very very hard though. Sony stole the thunder from them with MGS4 and now microsoft just gave some hefty counterpunches.

I think they are "winning" e3 so far imo. Of course opinions will vary but it just seems to me that the buzz is back on the side of XBox. The thing that has impressed me with them is that they started strong and are staying strong. Sony has had to play catch up from the starting gun and its hurt them. Theyve made up some ground but Mic. is showing it wont let up.

Okay well let me phrase it this way (since your being so picky :hi5:); "If the PS3 and 360 sales numbers were flipped in the US would SE have taken FFXIII over to the 360." In addition answer me this question, "Why would have SE taken the series over to the 360 at all if they didn't consider the PS3 to be a failure up to this point in sales." If SE thought the PS3 was doing fine selling wise I don't think it would have even occurred to them to port the game to the 360, the only reason they would have thought to do the port was if they thought "well the PS3 just isn't selling well in North America and we need to get our money back on this game so we had better port it to the successful 360." Its simple if the PS3 was leading the 360 in sales in North America then SE wouldn't even have considered taking FF to the 360. So its a round about way of saying the 360 is more successful than the PS3 and we want to capitalize on that. I just don't see how yanking an exclusive away from PS3 for this reason wouldn't be a slap in the face.

Now after that rant I want to change my course by saying that when all is said and done I think the PS3 version of FFXIII will outsell the 360. One main reason being in Japan the game will sell like crazy which will lead to consoles being sold at a higher pace in Japan which will be a huge plus for the PS3 catching the 360 in worldwide sales. Then in Europe and North America I think that the probably on Blu-Rae disk vs. multiple 360 DVD disks will lead to more people picking the PS3 version. So in Europe I see the PS3 version selling more copies since there is a roughly 50/50 divide in 360 and PS3 console sales there. In North America I expect the 360 to sell more copies than the PS3 but no where near the gap that occurred with GTAIV and that's because in North America the 360 has that larger install base. So in the end FFXIII game sales in North America and Europe I expect to see the PS3 come out ahead. As far as console sales in North America and Europe I see no jump in systems sold (both 360 and PS3) because of the dual release just as was the case with GTAIV.

So after that it may seem as though the PS3 is coming out the victor and yes I think it will but the PS3 will not enjoy the considerable consoles purchased boost that it would have gotten in Europe and North America and all the versions of the game sold on the 360 could have been sales for the PS3. So looking at that it will be a small victory in the end that no one will really pay attention too because all of the attention will belong to the 360 who stole the PS3 exclusive.

The real question Stitches is if you were to get FFXIII would you get it for the 360 and PS3? (and yes I did put way too much effort into this post :wink2:)

Putting FFXIII on the 360 further legitimizes the other SE titles that are forthcoming on the 360. This might push 360 owners (who possibly have never played a jRPG before, or at least a good one), to buy FFXIII, which might open those people up to SEs catalog of other games. Again, I don't think this was done to slight Sony at all, but purely to maximize the SE brand.

I have both consoles and am getting it for PS3 with 99% certainty.

    That's why I asked. :)

Also I'm glad both of you are making my point that more people will stick with the PS3 version.

However Stitches we will never agree on this one because to me it appears that Sony got slighted/a smack to the face/a stab in the back. To each their own I suppose.

True, single player games even with depth don't last long. But for example multiplayer games like Counter-strike or Gears can't keep me involved for years. I'm curious to see how long LBP can hold interest.

No. A big victory would be, say, MGS4 exclusivity.

Getting a simultaneous release of FF13 is minor. It's a blip on the radar in the overall fight. If Microsoft had to choose between losing Gears of War exclusivity or getting that FF13 port, they're going to say bye-bye to Square-Enix.

Final Fantay's sell more than Metal Gears. The only bigger sellers than Final Fantasy is Grand Theft Auto and Gran Turismo.

If Microsoft had to choose between Gears of war exclusivity and getting a FF13 port if they were smart they would choose FF 13 port as it sells more than Gears of War.

people buy systems for Final Fantasy. Gears of War is something people justify their buying a system for.

FF has only been around for what, 15-16 years if not more? (i'm guessing) Gears came out just a few years ago. Gears 2 will definitely put a test to your theory though come November!

I not saying one is better than the other. I just believe that FF sells more systems at this point than Gears.

I am interested in seeing how Gears II sells as it was one of the only truly good and beautiful games when it was released.

FF has no trilogies, and only one true sequel.

Final Fantasy can only go on in name alone. The fact that it sells as well as it does despite no direct relation in story whatsoever typically (save Cid, chocobos, mogs, etc) shows how great the games are (even when they are bad by FF standards).

Gears will never sell as well as FF, even if both are cream of the crop in their respective gaming categories (genres). That is just how it is.

I never said FF was a trilogy, I said Gears has only 3 games planed, you really can't compete with that. Gears will sell great in terms of its genre but your right it wont come close to FF.

Sorry but your completely off your rocker. Final Fantasy is one of the very very very few games that the casual folk out there play and moves consoles. I've had 2 girlfriends who bought PS2's purely for FF and that was it.

Even thinking small scale this is a move that will cost Sony about 250,000 console sales over the first 6 months it is out (between casuals and 360 owners who would have bought it purely for FF). It will probably push another 100,000 over 6 months for the 360 (and I am being very very low end scale here). Why? Because those that buy it purely for the FF series tend to be more casual players and very price sensitive. May not sound like much but to the companies that's easily a $100 million swing and I do stress I am looking at the low end here.

Now the high end, it could push as many game sales as GTA IV (11 million to retailers, 8.5 million sell thru as of the end of May). Everyone called Microsoft nuts to pay the money they did to end that exclusivity. They sure are not now as it's paid over what they spent multiple times over not to mention it kept MS selling consoles ok enough through the spring/early summer when it really should have bottomed out to 150k/month as they really haven't released much lately (only 360 game I bought in a while now is Civilization Revolutions...even bought GTA IV on PS3 cause the 360 version was sold out ;p )..and it didn't help that Ninja Gaiden 2 didn't sell like they thought it would.

For Microsoft this probably ranks in their top 3 this decade right with buying Bungie and turning Halo from a PC game to Xbox and the GTA deal. The only bigger announcement they could have possibly come up with is if they got exclusivity outright (really can anyone else come up with a bigger announcement idea?)

So yah anyways not as trivial as you make it out to be.......and christ I wrote a lot for something I probably won't even buy  I haven't played FF since VII.
