I took a run around different team sites, etc to see what kind of a meal Tuna could make out of FA. Here's the latest.

Pats will franchise Wilfork but, may consider trading him.
SF will franchise Franklin, and keep him.
Pitt is 50-50 on franchising Hampton.
GB is unlikely to tag Pickett.

Pats will re-sign or tag OLB Banta-Cain.

A Bryant will be a FA but, no one sees us having any interest, same appears true on Rolle.

Dansby will be the best FA available, and wants a lot of money.

IMO, that's it. Everything else is hamburger, not Tuna. helper.

So, in the "Where's The Beef" department, we may have a shot at Hampton, could get Pickett or, keep our "aged beef" in Ferg, who is close to the expiration date.

Dansby is not "Prime" but the closest thing for sale.

We may well end up with a donut for FA dinner. LOL

The RFA's are not expected to be tendered a contract, and the compensation, until just before March 5. GM's want to talk to other GM's at the combine before deciding on what to do.

Dansby is reportedly seeking about $30 million guaranteed. In a discussion in the club the conclusion seemed to be that, after adjusting for today's dollars, he's seeking about 80% of what Ray Lewis signed for. If you think he's 80% of the player that Lewis was in 2001, then he's worth it. IMO he's worth that and I don't think this FO will balk at that. Obviously somebody could over pay, but I still think that Miami should be the odds on favorite to land Dansby.

I'll pass on any comparisons to one of the best LB's to ever play the game.

However, I do agree with you. In the past two years, we have paid a couple of players very good, not great money. This year, there are no other options.

IF we do not get Dansby and maybe a NT, we have to trade picks or count solely on the draft. I am not counting on contract cuts.

Dansby is not worth what he will get. That supply and demand is something we have to deal with. There are no other choices.

I'll wait to see what he gets before I make a judgment, but if the reports of what he's expecting are accurate then IMO he's worth it.

We have so many holes to fill we MUST pick up at least one solid FA signing, either ILB (Dansby), NT (Wilfork) but I don't know of any others, the pickings sure seem slim!

I think we have no choice but to go all out for Dansby.

With all of the contract bonuses coming due in March some unexpected players will be cut or traded to avoid paying them.

And I still think Adalious Thomas is on the radar.

    Good call on that one
I def think he will be a dark horse in FA
he's outa the Pats...and he would be a def upgrade to what we have
good pass rusher from the ILB spot

    Depends what he wants.
He has been very very disappointing for NE since they signed him.
Another I would add to the possibility list is Chris Gocong.
He would be a nice fit at a seriously reduced price of Dansby....

Maybe Vrabel as well, it really comes down to whether or not they want a Vet with no learning curve, or if they will suffer a young players learning curve.

I do feel A Thomas will have a chip on his shoulder over the way the Patriots do things and two games a year against them will be attractive.

I see teams making A LOT of trades they would not have if FA was anything close to normal.

I've looked up and down the FA list a number of times, and there is just nothing there. Hell, after Dansby, the best LB I could see is Indy's Gary Brackett, he's 29, 5'11" and 235, and Indy is working on re-signing him.

    Brackett is a 4-3 ILB.

And I disagree, I see a couple of players who can improve the Dolphins from day 1 available in Free Agency.

The problem is soo many phinfans are focused on "we need an ILB" that they overlook the issues at both outside linebacker slots and at NT and at Safety and on Special Teams.

You're preaching to the choir on OLB and NT. I've put up threads, and a number of posts saying the same.

FS and ILB are close. Based on late season play, I give Wilson the edge over Ayodele, although I would trade Bell and move Wilson over IF we could find an upgrade.

I disagree on ST's, other than a return guy. Bess is average, and Ginn is up and mostly down. Cobbs seems to have the potential but, has not shown it.

I know Brackett is a MLB in the 4-3. It is not a huge leap to adapt to a 3-4 on the inside. I am not touting Brackett, just saying what I see in FA.

    Who are your picks?

Can I get an Amen! from the Congregation!

Seriously, anyone who does not think we could use a A Thomas or Vrabel or even Bantu Cain is not living in the "right now", we basically have no starting OLB's at the moment.

Ayodele was a disaster at ILB, he had a good 08 season, in 09 he was meat for any Te who could run a sub 5.0 40, that Texans game was the last straw when even a backup Te is torching your ILB's you have a serious problem that must be fixed.

Eh, i'm mixed on Wilson, a part of me wonders if it was the scheme, a different part wonders if it was Wilson merely stealing money from the Dolphins, I'd like to see Clemons play more either way.

A player like Sean Jones would/should come fairly cheaply if we cut Wilson but want Veteran Depth at Safety.

I've got my eye on Grice Mullen and Sheets and Tristan Davis.

What I'm thinking of is the need for a leader, a ST ace, we don't have anyone like that and imho i'd take a run at Kaasim Osgood or David Tyree for that role.

    At ILB?

    http://pit.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=9&c=12&yr=2010&nid=83&lnid=83&rc=16&pid=65

There just is not much there MM..Matt Wilhelm could not buy a job in the NFL last yr, Antonio Pierce maybe, maybe not, fits what we do.

TBH, we either stick with what we have, or hope a Vet is cut, or draft someone because the pickings just are not there this year at ILB that is unless Ireland has his eyes on someone we simply could never know about, for example maybe Derrick Johnson is available cheaply?

I will say the teams we played in 09 offer the best chance to see some guys signed, that is what happened in the 09 offseason, we played the Raiders in 08 and signed Jake Grove for example.

Jason Allen, if not cut, and Hilliard looked pretty good. I also expect Wake to be MUCH better.

agree we need one solid, maybe two out of free-agency
    however
disagree about all the holes we have to fill to compete
needs: ILB, NT, WR, maybe a FreeSafety & TE
could develop our FreeSafety & TE in-house
which would leave three positions to fill: ILB, NT & WR

not so bad  think about it
    we will contend in 2010

In regards to JAllen, imho he is in that handful of players who either step up in the preseason cycle or they will be gone, imho Ireland will only carry a player with potential for a certain period of time and then he will make room for the next player to develop.

Like Nate Ness who is on the practice squad, he runs 4.3 40's works cheaper and played a bit in 09, if Allen does not show increased competence and becomes a threat to be at least the nickel Cb, why keep him around if Ness is ready to take his spot?

I think we will see that implemented this offseason the same as it was in 08.

I expect Jason Allen to be cut. This is not good news for Ginn. There will be no longer a partial buffer on 1st round picks not doing well with Miami's "finest fans."

Not familiar with Ness, aside from FBI fame. :)

jason taylor will stick & start w/ cameron wake,
    back-up & rotation: moses, anderson & walden
front office would never unload taylor & porter
the same season, simply not going to happen
we're set @ OLB, it's the middle that has to be fixed

JT believes he will be a last resort if the team really needs him. No one from the team has even contacted him, or his agent. This was in the Herald a month or so ago. Nothing has changed.

Wake has yet to play LB.

not much to complete the defense & we're ready to contend

I would look into Kassim Osgood.

The guy is an all-pro special teamer, he does not play much at WR but the Chargers have some darn good WR's in front of him.

The guy is a huge target which we could use.

I would look hard at this guy if we can get him at a reasonable price.

And I would draft Defense all day.

Exactly, and Sam Aiken really was a surprise for the Pats in 09 and he was a career long ST player in Buffalo.

And tbh, a part of installing a Culture of Winning is locking down the details, ST improved 20 slots "but" imho the message should be sent that even that much of an improvement is simply not good enough, the "best" ST unit in the AFCE should be the goal.

And..the SparanoPhins have not recovered an onside kick in 2yrs...

Wake has similar strengths and weaknesses to Dumervil so I expect Nolan doesn't see the OLB cupboard as bare as many here do.

IF you were an NFL GM, would you trade Crowder and Ayodele for Anderson and Moses?

That's what it comes down to as far as need, and pessimism.

I believe you will be right, in a year. The difference is that Dumerville played LB.

Dumervil was DE in college and in Denver until 2009. It was Nolan that moved him to LB last season. So going into their first year with Nolan, Dumervil and Wake had the same amount of LB experience.

Doesn't mean he won't still be starting come September. I think JT starts next year. I also wouldn't be too surprised if we sign Larry Foote. Dansby would be a great addition, but he may demand more money than the FO is willing to shell out. Foote will most likely come cheaper and would still be an upgrade over Ayodele, I believe.
I think we'll do what we've been doing and double up on draft picks by drafting 2 OLBs.
So IMO we would go into the season with JT and rookies at OLB and Crowder and Foote/Dansby at ILB. With Wake continuing to work on improving his pass coverage and run stopping.

I dont see them getting rid of Jason Allen as of yet. He hasn't quite lived up to his first round status but he is arguably one of the top special teams player we have on the team. I believe he had 13 tackles last year, 2nd only behind Nate Jones. He doesnt have much of a cap hit I believe and he wasn't terrible when pressed into action later in the year. Getting rid of him for someone like this Nate Ness is very premature considering Ness is listed as a safety and would leave us a little short at the CB position. Also Ness doesn't seem to have quite the speed Allen has. According to his pro day numbers he ran a 4.48, not a 4.3

Imho Allen has to improve or he will be viewed as a progress stopper.

#1 in ST tackles was Nate Jones, #2 was JA, however Lexxy had 13, 3 less than Allen and he stopped playing ST maybe in week 10 or so.

What JA did do well was play Cb, when Vontae D went out in the Pats game JA was targeted by Brady and he stripped the ball from Moss on a surefire TD.

The thing with that is, whose progress is Allen stopping? When Will Allen comes back he moves back down to #5 on the depth chart in front of no one. Unless he just absolutely looks horrible in the preseason and camp, I see no point in cutting him.

I see a few bargains in the FA department apart from the obvious big time free agent such as Dansby and I do consider him "prime". Wilfork isn't going anywhere. They will franchise him and keep trying to work on a deal. Banta-Cain I don't think would be on our radar anyways due to the fact Nolan signed him when he was in San Fran and Banta-Cain didn't do much there.

Justin Bannan who a few people have brought up would be a good pickup. Held down the fort very well for Baltimore last year while Gregg was hurt. He also had a better year according to profootballfocus.com than Pickett and Hampton and would cost less to sign I think.

Derrick Johnson from KC is a guy who had a good year last year. Need to watch out for what kind of tag KC puts on him since he is a RFA.

This year like they have been saying is going to probably end up being very trade heavy. We do have some interesting pieces that may attract teams so we will see. I just dont see us giving up any picks this offseason though.

The goodies are going to have to be from the draft. The FA cupboard is either bare or pretty expensive. I could see the FO going for mid ranked FA's like Tully Banta-Cain. I'm not sure I see them paying Dansby type cash though I would welcome it in this case.

I expect them to do with they did with Cam Wake. Find value at a position of need without laying lots of cash out. The FO has laid out cash rarely for big time FO's and when they have the results have been mixed.

Where did you come up with Lex not playing STs after week 10 or so? Did you read it, assume it, or actually check for yourself who was out there on kickoff and punt coverage every time?
I'm fairly certain I saw Lex covering kickoffs later than week 10.
