Fasano get a second round tender

I liked Fasano a whole lot better in 2008 than I did in 2009. He really missed David Martin on the field with him. Without Martin, Fasano was missing something.

There is no way he gets signed to an offer sheet by a team willing to give up a second round pick. If so, praise the Lord to that organization. I like Fasano, somewhat, but I'd take a second rounder for him in a heartbeat, flipping our first for Marshall and using the 2, 2, 3 on LB, TE, DT.

I would give up Fasano for a 2nd without question

Who else besides Fasano are Dolphin's RFAs???

Ok, stand corrected, about Ronnie....looks like Dolphins declined to pick up option per NO CBA...thus choose to tender contract equating to 1st round pick as compensation if someone bites.

The Dolphins have tendered Brown at 110 percent of his 2009 salary. The tender is worth $3,969,239 and the Dolphins would be due a first-round pick if another team signs Brown and they don't match. For the sake of clarification, you might remember that Brown told The Miami Herald he had an option year for 2010 and would be under contract at $5 million if there was no cap. That was true assuming both he and the Dolphins exercised the option.

The Dolphins opted not to exercise the option for obvious reasons. They have a running back coming off a significant foot injury who is not yet able to run and cut at the start of free agency. Why would they elect to pay a $5 million contract when they can use the $3.97 million tender and save themselves approximately $1 million?

Moreover, it is unlikely any team would be willing to give up a first round pick for Brown given his current condition. And, in the unlikely case some team might give up such a high pick, that would leave the Dolphins in the inviable position of either keeping Brown by matching the offer or getting a first-round pick for him.

So, Fasano, Ronnie, and looks like The Dolphins have only one other restricted free agent -- linebacker Quentin Moses for a total of 3 players with tags (not sure on Moses contract tag value ~ expected to be same draft round which would equate to 3rd per the article).....


so all in all, Phins use Tag to control costs if they end up with players, and at minimum get same draft value back (1st RB, 2nd for AF, and 3rd for QM) Whats interesting is that Phins only gave up 4th for Fasano, but he was drafted in 2nd by Cowboys.

Good move by the FO, we obviously needed to keep him this season (adding TE to the list of FS, NT, WR, and pretty much every LB position as necessary upgrades would be impossible to manage in one offseason) and paying him just over 1mil is a good deal IMO.

However, if some team wants him for a second, I'm letting him go if I'm Ireland.

So far the RFA process basically screws the players who are tagged, they can literally be locked up for the majority of their careers with this crap.

the RFA tenders are 1yr contracts, at which point, either they negotiate a long term deal, or the become Franchise or Transition tags guys going forward (which can suck), or become UFA's the following season.

How does that equate to "majority of their careers"

6 yrs to hit RFA...RFA tag..for a year...franchise tag..franchise tag...9 yrs into their career they hit the open market?

So unless the player was 20 when they came into the NFL, they can be locked up well into their early 30's..or their prime yrs as a player.

Put it this way, Fasano is playing for 1.something million per yr, that is dirt cheap and the player has no leverage to negotiate a new deal as there is no arbitration in Football...u stuck like chuck...:D

6th year is cause of no CBA....Ronnie signed 5yr contract following draft...so thats normal, and RFA would kick in to start the 6th year only. Normal really....the 5yr contract was nice for both parties. 6th gives the original team some power, but not all the power. Not all original contracts are 5yr deals for drafted guys....just was in Ronnies case.

To be fair, Franchise or Transition tag is not part of RFA rules...so you cant state "RFA process" has flaws and lump Franchise or Transition into that argument....but yes, Mgmt has more power over players they want to control and keep....but players get paid big bucks when Franchise or Transition tag get appllied...its not cheap....and Union likes the terms and agreed to the system.

Think of it this way though, and it's a brilliant move by Tuna, Inc. By even placing the "original round" tender on him, cutting about $600,000 off the contract, they are practically begging another team to sign him for just a little more (making Fasano happy), and then getting a second round pick back in one of the deepest drafts in the last 20 years! At 1.7 million, it's not such an obvious move for another team. A 1.1 million, another team will take a good hard look!

IMO, I'm hoping someone gives us another second round pick! Where do I sign up for that one! Please please, take Anthony Fasano!!! I won't cry if he's still on the team, but for a second rounder back, it's a no brainer!

Ownership announced their opt out years ago, meanwhile that would be 9 yrs of declining value of a "Franchise" tag as salaries decrease due to Free Agency movement becoming more difficult Ownership have a win win situation.

No incentive to offer a new deal, and high return compensation if a player does manage to land an offer as they have their choice between "draft pick" or "arbitrary assignment of value" Tendering...

But that RFA rule is only for 1 year following completion of original contract......thats fair. Thats still not the majority of their careers.

Which brings them to yr 7, werein they can be transition tagged, then franchise tagged which brings them to yr 8 or 9 depending, then they can hit FA.

Sort of like the Dansby situation only with 2 additional rookie contract yrs tacked onto it, if we wanted to sign him under this new deal he would be in yr8 or yr 9...not yr 5 or yr 6.

Not all contracts are 5 yr deals coming out of the draft....for those that are...its because they are top dogs...and the team deserves the right to pay them lots of money, and get something for them if another team poaches them following the 5th. But lots are not 5yrs.....and even still...its 1 more year....big whoop.

If after RFA, they can franchised or transistion tagged...they player rakes the cash for 1 more year - big time cash....each time....again, big deal. The players arent being abused...these arent sweat shops with low pay.

Whats the issue with the system? Protect the original franchise that drafted them and give them control to recieve compensation if another team pulls them away in RFA year.

That is win/win.

This draft is loaded with play-making tight ends so I still think they draft one.
