Yeah, on the off-chance you can get Jennings at the right price, they should do that. But beyond that it looks like adding a recognizable WR via FA will be cost-prohibitive.
Another thephins.com trend, Rando poster wants to sign these five guys in free agency (for well below market value) and draft these 10. Post entire new 53 man roster, taking up a full page x1000
What position in FA isn't going to be cost prohibitive? That's FA. It's always expensive. If we aren't willing to spend that... then we aren't going to be able to fill any of our largest holes with an impact player via FA.
Right, which is why FA should be used extremely sparingly in terms of building a roster. There are very few opportunities where the price will match the value to the team. The successes in FA are by in large mid to low-level players that go under the radar. There is a chance with Greg Jennings IMO, because he is a very good fit.
Tight end looks to be dramatically more cost effective in free agency this year. No one heading to the market got the $5.9 million tag for this year, and there's a lot of good players plus the potential for more to be added. I think there's a pretty good chance the best course of action is to sign a tight end(or two, even), and go after wide receiver in the draft. Big money free agency is not generally a successful venture.
Its a pretty close comparison. But KC certainly should have the better roster considering Miami has 3 more picks in the first 3 rounds than KC.
I disagree that FA isn't effective... however many people often make large mistakes... no doubt. I do agree that we may be able to target a good TE. Cook did not get the tag...
Based on how they did last year? Miami for sure. The Chiefs got a lot of **** performances from supposedly marquee guys, especially on defense.
I think if you go back every year and look at the top-5 FA signings in terms of guaranteed money, you would be very hard-pressed to find many that actually played to their level of compensation. At least in terms of non-QBs. There certainly are effective ways to attack FA, but it isn't going to be on the marquee guys.
In all fairness the Chiefs TALENT stacks up well with just about anyone. They just had an idiot coach and no healthy QBs. (That could play)
Since I believe the Dolphins will still be in rebuilding mode in 2013, I agree with you that the Chiefs will be the better team this year. They already have better talent on their roster and now they have a QB who will upgrade that position for them. Also they have a new coaching staff and a new GM which is going to help them turn their team around. I think the Chiefs are going to be a legitimate playoff contender this year.
Jennings just **** his pants because Bowe is younger and has less injury history, with constant production. Pretty much everyone at the beginning of FA said "Okay Jennings for 8, Bowe for 10, Wallace for 11/12"
Sure has been for a few years now I do think KC competes this year especially in the weak AFC West. Denver is the only powerhouse left and that's even questionable.
Denver runs the west no less than NE runs the east. And if we had the worst record in the league plus a Alex Smith and a just fired Andy Reid would anyone be saying we were contenders? No. Anything can happen in a 16 game season it's just funny how people have more faith in other teams than they do I their own.
That would be blind faith. I HOPE we get better and I hope we play better, but ofcourse you would trade rosters with KC. That's not being a bad fan, that's being realistic.
I mean regardless, this is going to be a "WE'RE LESS TALENTED THAN A TWO WIN TEAM FIRELAND" thing regardless, right? It might be easier to skip the whole framing part and justification part and just get to that part?
Geno Smith would be off their board for #1 too I guess. Would they want to move Albert to LG? Who would be the next most logical #1 overall choice? I'm thinking right now Sharrif Floyd.
At some point, hopefully, people begin to realize NFL FA..kinda sucks. This is not the NBA or MLB, the system is designed to keep talent on a drafting team until they are too old to play at a high level, then they cut them loose and of course "Fans" then scream to sign them.
IMO, it's pretty obvious that Andy Reid does not share your sentiment that Alex Smith is mediocre or stopgap. I don't either for that matter.
I like this tight end draft almost as much as the wide receiver draft. So just one UFA tight end please.
I think Smith has been under Harbaugh long enough now to take this new job in KC and run with it. Initially Harbaugh used Smith as a game-manager when he was putting Alex back together again both mentally and performance-wise, but as time grew on that gradually changed to where Smith could in fact carry the team on his shoulders like we saw in the playoff game vs N.O and come through in the clutch like in his 6 fourth quarter come-from-behind wins in 2011. I think he's definitely an upgrade over Cassell and a better an option than over-drafting a QB with the #1 pick, especially considering a rookie QB likely isn't offering KC any hopes of winning the division while Manning is in Denver.
This may seem really crazy and illogical, but I'd rather wait to see how both rosters shape up heading into training camp before stating absolutely the Chiefs have a better team talent wise in 2013.
