    Good point.
Too bad it doesn't allow us to look at the most recent years.

I think parts of our drafts have been promising, some- unpromising, and overall perhaps slightly above average. I think maintaining some coaching/philosophy/scheme consistency for once <hopefully> and finally landing a QB which also opens up our 2nd round picks to use else where will make a big difference. The Niners looked like they weren't drafting well..... until Harbaugh arrived, got performance from QB, and tied it all together, and now we're suddenly taking notice to how much talent they actually had. Not saying that's us but I think the coaching & QB consistency will make the moderate deficiency in talent we thought we had look much less deficient.

I still maintain that Ireland should head our draft/scouting and have a GM that knows how to build a roster.

If there is one thing that Ireland has demonstrated to be deficient in, is building a roster and using his resources. He will have a spectacular chance this offseason to erase all of those doubts though.

he does get credit for stockpiling the assets for this year. Now...do a good job.

Not seen a single person suggest this is not an objective study.

    Just misguided.

first of all i completely disagree, Ireland has been pretty poor in the draft, it's actually the main reason i want him fired (though he hasn't been much better in FA either). if Ireland actually did draft well, the ISG (Ireland Support Group) wouldn't try to deflect blame for the ****ty early drafts to Parcells.

secondly, i hope this ridiculous chart wasn't what convinced you.

I think we've been subpar for about 20 years in the eval dept.

nope. I think this chart is BS. But I like some of the players he has brought in through the draft. I think he has added talent. He just hasn't put it together to form a roster. (His ****ing job)

Why would it not be? The quarterback play is a disproportionate part of the record, the rest can be quite good but without that you're still not all that successful.

    well..that is all true.

That is an important part of all of this.

Had he hit on a QB, Jeff Ireland might be celebrated.

Can't wait for this thing to kick off already. Free Agency is first week of March?

Of course it's suspect. Good teams draft lower and have fewer slots available for incoming rookies, for one.

But it's no less suspect than using win-loss records, which is what most fans use.

It's got its flaws but it's tremendously better than win-loss records, because that conversation rarely gets more intellectual than "THIS **** SUCKS FIRE SOMEONE". This you can put into some sort of valuable context. There's grounds for debate if all starters are created equal, or if the right starters are getting drafted, but it's something. You can put what the Dolphins have done in some sort of real, meaningful context which doesn't in practice actually get done in most conversations.

Taken as a whole this methodology suggests that the Dolphins are pretty successful in drafting starter-quality players, but arguably aren't producing the *right* guys or positions. That's about as realistic an accurate an assessment you get if you compare the Dolphins draft picks side by side with others.

I agree with you. So, how do you factor in, if at all, getting the fan base excited in terms of how good a GM is at acquiring players?

Which is just as subjective as the original argument that you don't like. There's no science to a pro bowl selection except for 'being popular'. Reshad Jones/Pouncey....easy cases for being selected that weren't.

Wait you want Ireland fired this close to the draft?
I think everyone here knows that would be a bad idea.
