It's not a one or the other proposition, though. He's still asked to do the stuff he was expected to do. He had plenty of chance to contribute as a Nickel DT. You can still expect a 2-gap DE to be productive as a pass rusher, and he hasn't spent all his time or effort doing that.

I'd have expected Dorsey to be a better 3-technique, but if I'd have through he'd be able to do the 2-gap stuff this well then I'd think he would have been a fine DE.

Those aren't impact player numbers. Wich is why someone is drafted top 5...to make a significant impact.

What if the Vikings put Jared Allen at Saftey???

Point is when you have an impact player you build around his ability, not make drastic changes.

And the congruent position for Wake would be 3-4 OLB, and we know how he did there.

Those are all fine points, and I'm not really disagreeing with you per se. My beef was more with the notion Dorsey should be labeled as a high first round DT disappointment even though he only played the position for one year.

No he's just a disappointment in general.

His KC linebackers would probably disagree strongly with you.

He was drafted to play a 1 gap 3 tech DT in a 4-3, not to play a 2 gap 5 tech DE in a 3-4. If you obtusely refuse to accept the fact there is a significant difference, then it is best we end this discussion right now.

Not all players taken in the top 5 become All Pros. Just being a solid contributor even playing in a scheme that he's not best suited for is impressive, and indicates that he is not a bust.

It's actually a great example of how talent can be squandered by regime change and scheme change.

Much like the 3-4 remnants we have here.

It's a great example of limited coaches who do not adapt their schemes to fit the strengths of their personnel. Under Bill Arnsparger, the Dolphins played both the 4-3 and 3-4 in various years, partly due to which scheme best fit the current personnel. I felt this was one of Shula's strong points too.

He was drafted to make a difference, he has not.

As a top 5 pick he hasn't been what they had hoped, is he a non contributing bust? No. He is a middle of the road player, and that's fine if your drafted outside the top 10.

It's not like they had a Suh on their hands in KC and all of a sudden decided to change the scheme despite ALL that talent they had at 4-3 DT. For all you guys know that switch could've SAVED his career.
