The Colts are rebuilding too. They currently have the 5th seed in the playoffs. As are the Seahawks, also currently 5th seed. The 49ers were rebuilding last year and they've just made a switch at QB to a 2nd year green-behind-the-ears QB of the future. By all means they should be still in a rebuild but instead they're beating the unstoppable Patriots on national television and looking like the best team in football. The Bengals were rebuilding with Andy Dalton. They made the playoffs. The Dolphins were rebuilding in 2008 coming off the worst season in franchise history. They won the division. The Redskins are supposed to be rebuilding around RG3. They're in the playoff hunt, actually right now they have the tiebreak for the division title.

I think your point of view is a common one. It's just unfortunate that it is very common to have serially low expectations so that you're not as likely to be disappointed.

I also feel that those teams have more talent than we do, and feel their teams have been built better (which would be an indicment on Ireland). The 2008 Fins were a fluke that had more to do with catching every break imaginable (easiest schedule in the league, Brady tearing his ACL week 1, etc), rather than that being a "successful rebuilding effort"... as clearly demonstrated the following seasons.

So, in your opinion, I have either intentionally or subconciously set my expectations low in a form of a self defense mechanism in order to decrease the likely hood of being disappointed with the outcome of the season? Certainly it wasnt intentional. I was more going off the general nationwide consensus of how competitive our team would be this season. Most people predicted us to be one of worst teams in the league, and that Tannehill would look Blaine Gabbert-ish as he "clearly needed more development before playing"... and neither ended up being true.

I would find it unfortunate for you though that your standards for a good season put it at above .500 when the team is lacking talent to do so (again, due to Ireland). It will be hard for you to really enjoy a football season until this team is a contender. No wonder why you want Ireland gone so bad, lol. I've enjoyed this season plenty.

Does that suggest that those teams have successfully "rebuilt"?

Did the Jets rebuild with Mark Sanchez? Did the Chiefs rebuild with Matt Cassell? Have the Lions rebuilt?

Initial success is nice but it doesn't mean the team will be successful.

I've posted it in a few different threads now, but for me, he's had 5 seasons with the title GM, and has 1 winning season (his 1st) and potentially 4 consecutive losing/non-playoff seasons. It ends there for me. It doesn't help that almost everyone has left other than him - owner, VP, coaches, QB, and several other players. Yet, the Dolphins still aren't winning.

How are the Seahawks rebuilding? They have been building for 3 years.

And the Dolphins haven't with Jake Long, John Jerry, Anthony Fasano, Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, Randy Starks, Cam Wake, Paul Soliai, Koa Misi, Karlos Dansby, Sean Smith, Chris Clemons, etc.? I mean most of their starters are guys that have been there 3+ years. If that isn't enough talent, then again, that falls on the shoulders of Ireland. The Seahawks aren't all that different from Miami - except they have players continuing to progress/develop and now they have a really good rookie QB.

The Seahawks re-vamped their QB position this off season as did the Dolphins. We are not re-building any more than they are.

I disagree. They were rebuilding for 4 years, failed... and hit the reset button. They brought in new coaches, systems, and philosophies. This is year 1 of a rebuilding process.

Otherwise, if you want to characterise it the way you have, the've been rebuilding since Wanny went 4-12 a decade or whatever ago.

Also, the Seahawks went 7-9 in their first season of rebuilding. Now, 7-9 happened to be good enough for a playoff spot as 7-9 was the best record in the division... but we have a good shot at finishing 7-9 this season as well. How are we far off that pace set by the rebuilding Seahawks in our first year?

Roster turnover does not really support this thesis.

And it's absolutely ludicrous to suggest my logic in any way whatsoever suggests that the Dolphins have therefore been in a contiguous rebuild since 2004. Not even close. Terrible application of logic on your part.

How far off are we? About 5 years, since we've been rebuilding since 2008.

If you follow the thread, you'll see that it isnt a point I was disagreeing with.

I was arguing whether this season has been a disappointment and/or not a success. That I would disagree with...

I would not disagree that Ireland has done a poor job adding significant talent.

Please explain? We hired an entirely new regime minus 1 person, changed schemes on both sides of the ball, we traded away some of our most talented players for future draft picks, and drafted a rookie QB?

That is the very definition of hitting the reset button IMO. I dont know what you mean by terribile application of logic. The point was, that a reset button had been pushed. If you dont feel that it had been pushed, then I'm not sure that you could classify it ever being pushed, and it being one continuous rebuilding effort since Wanny failed a decade ago.

Totally disagree. They changed their QB position, however everything else stayed exactly the same. No new defense, no new offensive scheme.
