- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could surprise everyone and make Donnie Avery their first pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. The team has told sources they desperately want to come out of this draft with a speedy receiver with the ability to catch the underneath throw and take it all the way; in other words a wide out unlike any they presently have on their roster. The staff in Tampa has been referring to Avery as "Little Joey" representing the similarities they see between he and veteran wide out Joey Galloway. Tampa was high on DeSean Jackson at one time but coach Jon Gruden decided the Cal receiver is too small for his liking. All signs now point to Avery. Would the team use the 20th pick of the draft on the UH product? It is possible according to sources. - If Tampa does not take Avery in round one Green Bay just might. A source has told us that the Packers have shown an inordinate amount of interest in him recently. Surprising late word around the league is the Packers are also considering taking a quarterback with their first pick.
Easy, speed. Bulger loves to hurl it deep, and with the loss of Bruce and the aging of Holt, they are lacking a true deep threat. Holt can still hoof it, but Avery is young and fast. His job is gonna be to run fast on that track surface they call a playing field and catch it. Actually a good fit. He may not be the most polished guy out there, but in a weak WR class he found a team who wanted his skill badly.
Anyone who payed attention to previous Parcells drafts would see that he goes for the beef in his early rebuilding, and with good reason. I was not surprised (and somewhat happy tbh) that we didnt take any WRs. Slot is not a "need" position when your OL/DL cant block or tackle anyone.
