I'm not a Tannehill hater, I just think that he needs to prove this coming season that he deserves to be considered the long term answer for the Dolphins at the QB position. I think there still have to be some doubts about Tannehill as an NFL QB and he is the one who needs to erase those doubts with his play this coming season. As far as training camp at this time. The defense certainly should be far ahead of the offense at this point. The OL has five new starters and all the offensive players are trying to learn a complete new offensive scheme. So the fact Tannehill has thrown some interceptions or near interceptions is irrelevant to me. I am only concerned with how he plays once the regular season gets under way. If he is still throwing into coverage at that time and being intercepted, I will then be concerned. Right now though, Tannehill, along with all the other players on offense need to just work on getting adjusted to working within the framework of the new offense being installed by Lazor.
Dont look into the picks to much..by all accounts Tannehilll has been really good. Im really believing Lazors offense is going to have our team playing its best offense since the Marino years.
I have no doubts as to Tannehill's ability to play, he is a good qb, the question is how good can he be. Is his ceiling the Brady Brees and Manning level or the 2nd tier level? He wont be a complete bust he is the best qb since Marino IMO. I wish people would stop trying to be or prove they are qb experts. I am not picking on anyone, but it seems there are rush to judgments that it is frustrating. Thats what happens when you are an avg to below avg team for a decade or more. I will watch and see, what will be will be
Defense always ahead of offense this early. Plus this defense is in year 2 of the same scheme. Same coach. So very comfortable and able to go play with their hair on fire. This offense is new. Coach is new. Scheme is new. Line is new. Gibson/binns/Landry haven't been out there since early last season or not at all. Honestly I'd be worried if defense wasn't dominating. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thats a dumb quote by Salguero IMO. If people in the Organization werent very concerned about a unit so new.....they should be fired. Reminds me of the Captain Obvious commercials I hear on the radio.
Impressions after three practices, of course, this is just based on tweets that I've read, so grain of salt... Just about players standing out... good and bad...I can't speak to alignments, techniques all that fun stuff because I'm not there. Positives: Jarvis Landry - It's going to be hard keeping this player off the field. With Brandon Gibson coming back from a knee (he was held out halfway thru practice and they were icing his knee), Matthews and Landry should figure to get plenty of work in the preseason. I haven't read one negative about Landry. Today, he even went for a TD getting behind two safeties on a 7v7 drill. Showing off some deceptive speed. The scouting report had fellow LSU receiver Odell Beckham drafted higher due to his measurables. While Beckham struggles in TC with a hamstring, Landry is running routes full speed all the time and catching supposedly everything thrown his way. The WR Group as a whole looks to be very deep this year. Going to be some hard decisions on the final cuts. Daryn Colledge. He's slotted into the left guard spot nicely from what I've read. No negatives about him or left tackle Branden Albert. Which to me, is a positive!! Will Davis continues on from last year's TC in the play making department. but see negatives below... Walt Aikens / Michael Thomas. I'm excited about these players ability to come in to the nickel/dime and make plays... certainly if Jimmy Wilson were to get hurt. I'm rooting for both of them to make the roster. Aikens flipped to deep safety today. Thomas was supposedly at corner. Both players are being tested for that position flexibility you need to have if you're going to make the roster. I'm not surprised to see Aikens showing at safety. He seems to be a clone of Reshad Jones IMO. Negatives: Will Davis... seems to give up the big play every now and then. He's resurrecting Terrell Buckley. You'll hear him making a fantastic play in coverage one play. And then a few plays later, he's getting beat deep. Jamar Taylor is ahead of him on the depth chart apparently. He's the first one to fill in for Finnegan when he needs a breather. It's no surprise that the coaching staff is looking for consistency in their corners. The big impact plays are just window dressing. If you get beat yourself, you aren't cracking the rotation any time soon. JaWuan James... okay, it's early. But I'd like to hear just a couple of positives on him, since he's our first round pick and our starting right tackle. I can't wait till the preseason to see him in action. probably the first player I'll focus on more than any other. Dallas Thomas... I've heard some positives but also some negatives. As opposed to a Brandon Albert, who you don't hear much of anything about. If he's going to be a long term starter at right guard, he needs to have much more consistency than what he's had so far. Concerns moving forward: Koa Misi apparently got nicked today. Of course, his replacement at MLB? Jason Trusnik. The depth at the position continues to be a concern. It wasn't addressed in the offseason. We've got starters that have missed playing time with injuries last couple of years. And minimal depth. Still... with the talent on the DL and at DB, we've got a better than average defense. But I think for this group to take the next step, and become a dependable dominant aspect of this team, the linebackers have to get better. I'm not too concerned about the offensive line inconsistencies at the moment. It's way too early and the group is just getting it together with their best player (Pouncey) absent with injury. Talk to me after the regular season opener vs the Patriots.
Pads on Tuesday as well... and according to this: Chris Perkins @chrisperk 54m Philbin estimates 11 full pads practices, 7 in shells, the rest of camp.
I guess we just have a difference of opinion on Gibson. The only concern I have regarding Gibson is whether he can come back 100% from the injury he suffered last year. If he can, I would rather see him as a starter than Hartline. I think Gibson is more valuable in the red zone than Hartline and he is just as effective as Hartline everywhere else on the field. If Landry is good enough to take the #3 WR position and the Dolphins are going to try and trade one of their top three receivers from last year. I would much rather it be Hartline and not Gibson, with the caveat that this would only be the case if Gibson is fully healthy heading into the regular season. Of course if he isn't 100% healthy, the Dolphins wouldn't be able to trade him in the first place because I don't think any other team would have an interest in trading for an injured WR.
He left practice early and was limping...believe it was the same leg as the knee he messed up last year.
Saying he is the best QB since Marino isn't really saying much about his ability. Basically other than the one outstanding season by Pennington in 2008, the Dolphins have been starting QB's who would have been no more than backups on every quality team in the NFL since Marino retired. So while I agree Tannehill appears to be better than all those backups, he still needs to take his game to a level where he is rated in the top half of all NFL QB's playing today. He has proved in the last two years only that he is good enough to quarterback this team to the same type mediocre record most of the backups have done since Marino retired. Unless the Dolphins become a top 1-2 defense and develop a strong running game behind a dominant offensive line. The Dolphins will never have a chance of getting to the SB unless Tannehill becomes a franchise type QB. I believe if the Dolphins had Brees, Rodgers, Manning, or any of the other top 15 QB's in the league at the QB position, they would be viewed as a team which had a valid opportunity to make it to the playoffs and perhaps even a chance to get to the SB this season. I think the reason they are viewed around the country as a team who will finish near the bottom of the league in 2014 is because many pundits are not convinced that Tannehill will be able to take that next step up as an NFL QB and he will merely remain an average starter throughout this coming season and probably his entire career. Of course average for an NFL QB is okay if the fans are willing to accept mediocre seasons, year after year. I just think that most Dolphin fans are fed up with mediocrity after what we have been through the last decade. Hopefully Tannehill will take a giant step forward as an NFL QB this season. Until he does though, this team will continue to struggle to become a consistent winner.
I hate to see that because I really like him as a WR for the Dolphins. Hopefully it is nothing serious, but if he can't return to the level he was playing prior to the injury last season, I just hope Landry or one of the other young WR's can step up and perform capably during this coming season. I never really understood why so many people on here though so little of Gibson based on how well he played prior to being injured last year, but everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion.
Omar Kelly ✔ @OmarKelly Top performers today were: 1. Jarvis Landry (deep ball TD from Tannehill. 2. Dion Jordan (pick 6 INT of Tannehill. 3. Rishard Matthews
Andrew Abramson @AbramsonPBP Philbin just praised Gator Hoskins. Good poise, he can adjust on the field.
Omar Kelly ✔ @OmarKelly Goal No. 2 for Randy Starks is he wants to become a better leader because he knows that young players are watching and following him now. Expand 22m Omar Kelly ✔ @OmarKelly Dolphins DT Randy Starks told me he has two goals this season. He wants to not leave the field, which means earn a spot in the nickel package
Eli manning is most certainly not second level. He's third at best. I'd lay second in the Romo, Big Ben, Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson level. Consistent 25/12 guys. Tannehill is actually not that far off. Cut down on the 3 turnover games, get that accuracy up a bit. Tony Romo actually quietly had himself a very good year statistically.
The Dolphins defense during the those years was never even close to the type of defense the Bears, Ravens (in their first SB win), or Buccaneers had when those defenses led their teams to the Super Bowl and won them. I would say that if the Dolphins defense had been comparable to any of these three defenses during the Wannstedt years, the Dolphins offense during those years would have been efficient enough to win the Super bowl. I apologize for stating they needed to be a top 1-2 defense. I should have stated they need to be one of the most dominant defenses in the history of the NFL, as these three defenses were, if they expect to win a SB without having a franchise QB at the helm. The Dolphins defense under Wannstedt was good, but it was far from being dominant enough to carry them to the Super Bowl, as the three defenses I mentioned above did with. The Bears actually had a solid offense, but the Bucs and Ravens basically had below average offenses and it was the defense in both cases which carried these teams to SB wins. Today it is harder for defenses to dominant as they once did because the rules favor the offense. Therefore it is far more important that teams have a top tier QB if they expect to get too and win a Super Bowl. My question in regards to Tannehill is, will he ever develop into the franchise type QB which can take his team to the SB? I don't want a QB who can win 7-9 games a year. I want a QB who can get this team into a position where they are a SB threat every year he is on the team. Hopefully that will be Tannehill, but I certainly want to see far more from him in 2014 than I saw from him in his first two seasons with the Dolphins before I buy into the hype that he is definitely our long term solution at the QB position.
Tony Romo is a perfect example of why stats mean so little. He plays great for much of the game but consistently fails to make the plays when the game is on the line. I know the Cowboys defense wasn't very good the past few seasons, but Romo just hasn't proved in his time as the starter for the Cowboys that he has that clutch factor in the fourth quarter of games that all the best QB's in the NFL possess. Romo and Tannehill both need to show that they can consistently put their teams on their backs and lead them to victories in the closing minutes of close games. While both of them have had limited success at doing this, they both have failed far more often than they have succeeded in making plays to win games when everything is on the line in the final minutes of the game. The top quarterbacks in the NFL pull victory from the jaws of defeat on a regular basis and that is what separates them from the merely mediocre QB's in the NFL.
That is just a media created myth due to the fumbling of the long snap. Back when this became the topic du jour in November of last year it was shown he had the most 4th quarter comebacks of ALL qbs in the past 3 years. His 4th quarter 102.9 QBR is the highest of all time. ALL TIME. 93.1 in the final two minutes of a game. Dallas hasn't had a defense in years. That's their problem.
As stated before, the defensive domination is to be expected due to the little roster turnover and a couple of years in the same system... in fact, I think this Dolphins defense will take the next step this season, which in turn will make our offense much better as well.
