At least he's familiar with the scenery, he's been arrested in Miami.

And will he be bringing Sweet Pea with him? I'd trust her just as much to call our plays anyway.

He's improved but not nearly enough, IMO. I thought the signs were there in the training camp reports and confirmable via preseason tape. Most people thought he did well in preseason though, so who knows.

That is my take, I'm fine with this move, but wonder about Nate Garner and why he did not get a shot.

Hell, if McKinnie can handle a basic bullrush he'll be an upgrade over Clabo who literally cannot do anything, can't run block, can't pass block.

You have to applaud the move. Simply, you are replacing a guy who proved himself unable to get the job done with a guy who is universally recognized as bad, but may be able to get the job done better. You can't be any worse off, and there is a slight chance that you might be better off.

What pisses me off is that it was obvious that this guy couldn't get the job done back in preseason, and this coaching staff and GM, who are fast proving that they might be morons, didn't bring other offensive linemen in to give themselves more options until we lost three games in a row and got our quarterback beaten up. They went with what they hoped would happen, without a Plan B. That's not how you run any kind of business.

Have we even used a swing tackle yet this year?

Not so much, think Ireland was prudent in signing Clabo, who up until now had been a solid, consistent RT, and Martin had to get a chance to show what he has to offer.

This mistake came in by not making changes after the Saints game when it was obvious neither one is very good at all.

Nope, which is why Garner not playing, even moving in at RG with Jerry going to RT is even more odd, Watkins can play swing tackle and G, so moving Garner into the lineup is a low risk proposition even from a Roster standpoint

McKinnie is less terrible than what we currently have at the position. It's an upgrade, at least Ireland didn't go all "Lamar Gordon" on us.

I've given up on Watkins. If he can't beat John Jerry he's cooked.

When it comes to PFF, I try not to pay too much attention to the grade scores where I don't have to. If they're all I've got, ok then...but if I have an objective alternative I'm usually going with that.

In this case the objective alternative is their pass block efficiency. He has improved in that mark. He had a PBE of 92.0 last year which ranked #64 out of 72. This year he's got a 92.5 and is ranked #54 out of 72.

When it comes to run blocking though, there is no objective alternative. You have to either trust your eyes or trust PFF's grades. If you haven't been paying close enough attention to trust your eyes and you're honest about that, then you pretty much only have PFF's grades. When the tackles are sorted by run blocking grade, Jonathan Martin ranked #70 out of 80 last year and #62 out of 75 this year. He went from a -6.0 to a -4.6. Given the amount of games played thus far one could actually argue his run blocking has gotten worse as he's on pace for a -12.3 grade.

McKinnie is not a good run blocker but then again our head coach is obsessed with the pass. I don't find it to be too detrimental. I'm glad he's not as terrible at Clabo at pass blocking.

I honestly did not know Garner was on the team before the bye week and I am completely baffled as to how he hasn't been given a shot anywhere on the line yet. Why is he even on the roster then...

sure, but when the 1st string is so inept it speaks volumes about how bad you must be to not get a shot.

In all honesty he's an upgrade at least as a RT. That said still a pathetic, no balls move.

This Staff in particularis very mistrusting of anyone who they do not name a starter, they stick with guy they made a starter.

Lineup shake ups are rare under Philbin

He better learn to embrace the lineup shake up. If he doesn't, he will find himself elsewhere. Loyalty will cost him his job.

Garner is average which for this line would be third best overall. By the way apparently McKinnie will play LT, Martin RT. Amazing, they can't even get that right. I hate stupid people.

I think we'll sign Albert in the off-season. Martin has a chance to lock down RT.

Yep, it is how he does things I've noticed, problem is it also means guys with talent won't see the field..Thigpen had that 50 yd play 3 games ago, has not touched the ball since in any meaningful capacity...that is how they do things

Deal makes sense, low cost to acquire, not a huge contract number, fits an immediate need.

Not sure how quickly he can step in and play, would love to see him on the field Sunday, but suspect it's "final chance" time for Speed Bump Clabo.

    Low risk, high reward?

You think an All Pro LT is gonna fall into our laps halfway through the season or something?

We probably should have just traded for Albert but hindsight is 20/20.

Garner is more of a RG to begin with, so it would make sense, doubt it happens quickly as 3 replacements on the OL is asking for problems, would have to look at risk vs reward.

Anyone have Martin's numbers from RT last yr?

IIRC, he was slightly better at RT than LT
