This is, of course, assuming he was willing to leave New England. There is a human dynamic to free agency, it's not just, "Oh, I MUST go here because they offered me a little bit more money."
Who said anything about a little bit. We could have offered him the same amount we were offering Jake Long and it would have been worth it.
I think Martin could be a good guard in a zone blocking system. In some ways he reminds me of Wade Smith. Similar size and athleticism, but questions about strength and balance. Smith couldn't cut it here as a T but went to the Pro Bowl last year as a G for Houston.
when he was coming out I suggested he might be better suited to play guard, but that's because I wasn't fond of the player at tackle..
Turn your head when you do that please Padre . . . IMVHO it would only be news if Ireland wasn't keeping an eye out for a veteran backup at both tackle positions.
We wouldn't have even needed to give him that much, if we offered him the same deal the Pats did but guaranteed him the money they weren't willing to, no way he turns that down.
This is somewhat similar to my concerns about Dallas Thomas. He gets bull rushed and planted on his *** at tackle. How is moving him to guard going to keep this from happening? DTs are bigger and stronger than DEs usually. He can't anchor vs a DE, but he could vs a DT??
We also had perhaps the best zone blocking guard in the league on the roster for a few weeks in 2008, in Evan Mathis.
Exactly... and he is the nephew of Bob Baumhower. Deguglielmo and Sparano should be keelhauled... The FO kept bringing in guys and Sparano and Chuckles kept saying these guys couldn't get it done, or weren't big enough, or not good fits or whatever and having Irish release them and bring in other warm bodies. Mathis, DThomas, Satale, Long, etc... that is a damn line right freaking there that Sparano had and pissed away.
I don't think it is a true strength thing -- I think it is more about keeping balance and his legs beneath him when trying to kick out quickly to keep the DE from getting the corner. Inside I don't think he'll need to worry that much about guys getting around him and I think he'd be able to anchor more effectively, even against guys that are technically stronger than the DEs. The things that Martin has struggled with and the things Thomas struggled with on Sunday are things many young OTs have struggled with early in their careers. Many of those guys nonetheless developed into very good players.
In Mathis' case, just keelhaul Sparano. DeGug wasn't hired til 2009. Mike Maser was the OL coach in 2008. Tony replaced him with his good buddy in 2009
"Hey there Dolphin nation! League sources confirm all 32 teams are actively investigating upgrades at numerous roster positions. You heard it here first!" Where's my poolitzer?
Some of you guys are just rediculously hard on Martin. He was better at RT than what we've had around here for years last year, and had a few rough games against some of the best pass rushers in the league. He's entering his second season. Lets see how he progresses and develops. He was a rookie last year, have some patience for crying out loud.
I am concerned mostly with depth on OL. I am concerned with offensive production overall. Time to see some points. Sherman kind of got a pass last year.
